Uber Eats expands partnership with Morrisons Supermarkets

Morrisons is to grow its immediacy offering in partnerships with Uber Eats. With the expansion, Morrisons will add over 400 supermarkets to the Uber Eats platform over the coming days.

Using Uber Eats’ technology, customers who use the Uber Eats platform can exclusively order from tens of thousands of items from Morrisons supermarkets.

The average delivery time for Uber Eats customers in the UK is under 30 minutes.

With this partnership customers will be able to order everyday essentials and Market Street fresh favourites from Morrisons as well as last minute dinners and must-have treats from The Best range.  Hundreds of these products have also been price matched to Morrisons supermarkets.

The expansion of this partnership, which already included Morrisons Daily convenience stores, comes as Uber Eats recently revealed that in the past two years, the number of people who have placed a grocery order on Uber Eats in the UK has nearly doubled.

Alex Troughton, Head of Grocery & Retail, Uber Eats, Europe, Middle East and Africa said: “It is fantastic to be expanding our partnership with Morrisons to include their supermarkets for the first time. Building on this partnership means customers who use our platform will have even more choice when ordering with us, with delivery in as little as 20 minutes, all at the touch of a button.”

Charlotte Exell, Morrisons Online Director, said: “We’re delighted to be offering customers another fast and convenient way to get Morrisons groceries delivered straight to their door by expanding our successful partnership with Uber.   We're committed to offering our customers great value high quality products however they choose to shop with us.”

My Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake

This is my My Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake. Necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention.

I recently bought a bunch of bananas from a discount supermarket. I ate one and several days later I decided to eat another, only to find that they had ripened to such an extreme extent that they could have worked as extras in the film The Blackness!

My wife and I both despise wasting food (if we really can't make use of something we compost it) so I decided to employ my inventive side to save the day.

I used a combination of ingredients from our pantry plus several others that I bought from Morrisons. (Morrisons is not the supermarket were I bought the bananas from, by the way.)

Ingredients:-
Ripe(!) bananas
Two tubs of Morrisons full fat cream cheese
The rest of a pot of double cream from the fridge
Packet of Butterscotch flavoured Angel Delight
A handful of Pearl Sugar (an Amazon overstock item bought from a local charity shop)
Sufficient milk to soften the mixture
Half a packet of crushed broken biscuits from the pantry
1/4 of a tub of Morrisons spreadable butter

Mix the spreadable butter with the crushed biscuits and place in a combination over in a metal or glass bowl, for 200c for about 10 to 15 minutes. Several times use a wooden spoon to make sure the base is properly mixed together.

Eventually, squash the mix down and then leave to cool.

Whilst it is cooling mash the ripe bananas and when they are fully mashed add the cream cheese, making sure it's all mixed in.

Then add the Angel Delight being careful to make sure all the powder is properly mixed in. At this stage add enough milk to make sure the mixture is not too thick.

Then mix in the Pearl Sugar.

Place the mix into the fridge and when the base is sufficiently cooled top it with the cheesecake mixture and return this to the fridge and allow it to properly chill.

I did think about adding some Bailey's Irish Cream, or Amarula instead of the milk, but after tasting the mixture part way through I decided against this. You could add the liqueurs, though, if you wished.

The result? A really delicious Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake!

We mentioned buying Amazon overstocks and the like in a previous post on our sister site, That's Christmas. That was how we bought a number of pots of Pearl Sugar, several boxes of breakfast cereals and some new Christmas decorations!

"Why Charity Shops are a Hidden Gem for Amazon Returns and Overstock Deals at Christmastime"

Actually, nearer to Christmas the above recipe with the addition of traditional Christmas spices would make a reasonably light Christmastime dessert treat.

Grab a Slice of the Action – Plant-Based Pizza Company 'One Planet Pizza' Launch a UK Supermarket First

One Planet Pizza, the fast-growing plant-based pizza company, is launching in Morrison's nationwide from October with a frozen category first, a plant-based Tex Mex pizza.

One Planet Pizza originally launched into Asda with their trademark sourdough plant-based pizzas. Since then, they have grown fast, outpacing plant based growth and developing several new recipes.

Now, chefs at One Plaent Pizza have developed a plant-based version of a UK favourite, Tex Mex.  Like the rest of the range, the new variant combines One Planet Pizza's popular wood fired sourdough base with rich tomato sauce and a unique and highly acclaimed white bean based cheese (a high protein secret weapon which makes their pizzas around 35% lower fat than the market1). To top it all off, the Tex Mex is covered with marinated vegetables and sprinkled with jalapeños for a little kick.

One Planet Pizza was founded by father and son team, Mike  and Joe Hill, with a clear mission to revolutionise the freezer aisle and get more people excited about plant-based food. Since their inception in 2016, they have grown rapidly, now listed in Morrison's, Asda, Booths, and across 6 markets, with a passionate fan base of vegans and flexitarians alike.

Joe Hill, co-founder of One Planet Pizza and guest Judge on BBC's The Apprentice, says “We can't wait to spice up Morrison's freezers with our outrageously tasty Tex Mex. Our mission has always been to make vegan pizzas SO good that even meat eaters want a slice. We're pretty proud that our strong sales, reviews, and brand growth suggest we are doing exactly that.”

Mike and Joe are both passionate long term vegans who believe strongly in the power of plant-based foods to tackle the climate crisis. Adopting a plant based diet can reduce carbon footprint by up to 52%2, though some sources think it could be far higher, so the pair developed hundreds of different recipes in their search for the perfect combination of toppings and sourdough base to make pizzas which appeal to everyone. The glowing reviews and strong sales suggest that their mission is well underway.

One Planet Pizza will be available in Morrison's from October 2024.

The lower price of 75p is available for all More Card customers while these standard carving pumpkins are still only 99p for those without a More Card. The move comes as Brits are set to spend a whopping £777 million on Halloween in 2023 – leaving parents’ pockets feeling petrified.

Whether planning the perfect pumpkin-carving party or looking to avoid pricey pumpkin patch visits, shoppers can find a purse-friendly option for every budget.

To take the stress out of paying for Halloween, Morrisons is helping families by offering the market’s cheapest price for a medium sized pumpkin this year; it is part of the wider frighteningly fantastic pumpkin range at Morrisons which includes munchkin pumpkins (59p), ghost pumpkins (£2.99), large pumpkins (£1.99) and even giant pumpkins (£8.99).

Morrisons has also introduced QR code stickers on all pumpkin displays in stores this year, which take customers to information on how to get the most out of their pumpkins and avoid them simply going to waste. Tips include: saving the pumpkins seeds for planting in the spring with cleaned pumpkin skins - an ideal household compost.

Chris Smith, Fruit Buying Manager at Morrisons, commented: “Any seasonal moment can be a cause for celebration but with budgets also top of mind this year we hope that by offering these cut-price options parents and little shoppers don’t have to compromise on carving the perfect centrepiece this Halloween.”

Are You Taking the Phizz?

Phizz are taking on Berocca as the UK's fastest growing effervescent brand; the young, science-led team works with a PhD neuroscientist to develop innovative all-in-one health supplements, formulated to support daily wellbeing, exercise, travel, and nights out. This month, September, sees the rollout of Phizz's first Out of Home Campaign, which will run until the 24th of this month.

What is the objective of the campaign? It's simply to drive brand awareness across London and to support the launch of Phizz Caffeine Boost in Tesco Express. Bringing the brand to life across a variety of touchpoints and platforms to maximise brand awareness, impact and campaign longevity.

With an expected reach in excess of 7 million, taking advantage of the return to office working and September's back to school season, the campaign includes advertising across three high impact mega screens including Canary Wharf, Westfield Shepherds Bush and Westfield Stratford; advertising across 50 food delivery bikes in Zone 1, Central London; 32 further mega screens will run for the full two weeks across zones 1 and 2.

Phizz have also created 500 magnetic clings, pavement stencils and sampling bins, the team will be distributing sample product across London for the next couple of weeks. Lastly, Phizz has partnered with Gymfluencers to create 100 bespoke Phizz Caffeine fitness influencer boxes, to enhance social media awareness in tandem with the campaign.

Phizz Founder Dan Cray says, "In 2023, Phizz has soared to third place within the effervescent category, and with our recent debut in Tesco Express, we decided the time was ripe to take our visibility to even new heights.

"With distribution now spanning over 4,500 national locations, we're embarking on an ambitious journey. Expect impactful ATL campaigns and exciting activations with renowned brands like Gymshark. This marks just the beginning of our significant growth.

"Our launch to Tesco Express is our first time in this convenience store format. The launch has been driven from the strong rate of sale nationwide in superstores. Tesco now sees a strong fit for Phizz to support non-stop city lifestyles.”

Phizz are also launching Orange, Mixed Berry, Apple & Blackcurrant Effervescent tabs to Morrisons. The brand will launch with a £6 promo running until 17th October, before retailing at £8.00 per tube of 20 tablets.

Founder Dan Cray went on to say: “Morrison's decision to include Phizz in their range reinforces our position as the fastest-growing brand in the category. We're obviously pleased and utterly thrilled to introduce our unparalleled benefits in an array of delicious flavours, aiming to elevate lives across the nation.”

Here are some details about the range:-

The new Cherry Caffeine Boost, a triple-action energy boosting effervescent, aims to combat the major cause of fatigue: dehydration. Available now from Amazon and Tesco. The ground-breaking formula, a global first, aims to optimise natural energy levels, combat fatigue and drowsiness, and deliver a daily dose of invigorating wellness.

We wake up every day with two basic health goals, to eat a well-rounded diet that achieves all our nutritional requirements and to drink enough water; busy modern lifestyles, travel and high-performance sport all get in the way of achieving these goals, and without optimal nutrients and hydration, you're not your best self. 94% of the UK is dehydrated, on average, consumers drink just 850ml of water per day – less than half of the recommended daily intake. A 2% drop in hydration leads to mental and physical fatigue.

With 75mg of caffeine, equivalent to a cup of coffee, and fortified with natural guarana, it heightens alertness and invigorates the mind and body. By adding Guarana to their tried-and-true formula, Phizz harnesses the Amazonian berry's energy boosting properties that can help to increase attention and alertness; it has more caffeine per berry than any other plant (even coffee beans) and it's also packed full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Guarana gives a slower releasing and longer lasting caffeine effect than caffeine from tea and coffee, providing a smoother energy release.

Further enhanced by a potent blend of essential B-vitamins, it unlocks the body's natural energy resource by helping convert food into energy. The low calorie (10kcal) tablet's energy proposition is complemented by a range of 17 essential nutrients for optimal health. Phizz Caffeine Boost can be incorporated into your daily routine, before a sports game or gym session, as a replacement for your morning coffee or energy drink, as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or when feeling jetlagged after a flight, making Phizz your new best friend.

“At Phizz, we provide comprehensive solutions with unmatched science to beat any other single product in the market. This product has a fresh perspective on the energy category while ensuring optimal hydration and health. And at only 40p per drink, we offer solid science at great value,” explains Daniel Cray, CEO and founder of Phizz.

The London-based start-up creates everyday life armour with their trio of 3-in-1effervescent tablets that combine a hydration formula, electrolytes, and a comprehensive multivitamin. The young, science-led team works with a PhD neuroscientist to develop innovative all-in-one health supplements that are formulated to support daily wellbeing, exercise, travel, and nights out. Unlike other effervescent brands, Phizz is both a multivitamin and a rehydration remedy, helping you thrive every day across three main lifestyle pillars:

Hydration

Dehydration and vitamin deficiencies are two common, daily challenges that can negatively affect our physical and mental performance. Just 1-2% dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and concentration loss. (EDITOR: It certainly does! And it's very, very painful!)

Electrolyte Replenishment

Phizz contains a range of key electrolytes to support heart, brain, nerve, and immune system function. These include four of the main electrolytes lost through sweat which helps prevent cramping and muscle fatigue.

High Dose Multivitamin

Phizz offers eighteen essential vitamins and minerals for natural energy, reduction in fatigue, normal functioning of the immune system, mental performance, and antioxidants to prevent cellular damage.

Phizz 3-in-1 is a small but mighty tablet (available in Orange, Apple & Blackcurrant and Mixed Berry), that helps you get one step ahead of your immune, energy, focus and hydration goals.

Phizz's science-backed formula helps you hydrate three times faster (compared with drinking water alone), delivers natural energy, and supports your immune system. Just dissolve one tablet in a glass or bottle of water (best served chilled!).

Phizz is perfectly balanced with 18 quality and high-dose vitamins and minerals designed to boost your natural energy (thanks to a B-12 and B-6 vitamin hit, 375% of your daily dose of immune-boosting vitamin C (the equivalent of three oranges) and electrolytes, often lost through sweat. Phizz also packs a self-care punch with zinc (more than in three cups of spinach), potassium (more than in one banana) as well as other powerful antioxidants .

Phizz is ideal as part of your everyday routine. It's diverse range of uses also support more targeted needs, including combating tiredness and fatigue, supporting an active lifestyle – such as marathon training – rapid rehydration after a big night, beating jetlag and supporting your body in hot climates.

Dehydration can have significant effects on physical performance, particularly during endurance events where large volumes of water can be lost through sweat. Phizz helps the body hydrate faster while also replacing key electrolytes to support muscle function. Drinking Phizz during, or prior to, exercise can therefore reduce fatigue, cramps, and thirst, while increasing energy and stamina. But don't just take our word for it! Phizz is rigorously vetted by medical departments and players and is chosen as their preferred hydration solution due to the superior formula. Damian Roden (High-Performance Consultant and former Premier League Head of Performance) says, “Phizz gives players a head start on the competition with the vitamins and electrolytes our players need to perform at their peak.” Phizz has supplied over 50 professional sports teams across rugby, football and cricket including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Saracens. Notable fans also include Olympic Champion Peter Reed OBE, TV personality Vicky Pattison and television presenter Andi Peters.

Although a premium option, with quality at its core, Phizz offers value against a typical energy drink at just 40p per serving. Your plastic usage is also cut down to one recyclable tube, compared with 20 one-time-use drinks containers, helping you to minimise your impact and maximise your health. Phizz has partnered with Plastic Bank, for each Phizz product purchased 1.3x its weight in plastic waste is collected, recycled and prevented from entering our oceans; collectors are paid a premium, empowering local communities across some of the world's most vulnerable coastal environments. Phizz is proud to be leading the way as the only plastic-positive effervescent tablet in the category.

Using the power of science, Phizz make all-in-one health supplements that help you thrive every day; find Phizz at Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Amazon, or buy direct from www.phizz.co.

Extra ‘More Points’ will also be available to customers on a range of branded products for the first time ever, plus a wider selection of Morrisons own brand products.

Once a customer has saved 5,000 points, they'll receive a ‘Morrisons Fiver’ which can be redeemed on a future shop. For example, customers can earn:

400 points when they buy 1.75l Coke

300 points on Dolmio sauces 750G

1,800 points on Huggies Drynites (carry packs)

500 points on selected wines

150 points on Morrisons 12 British Beef Meatballs 340G

600 points if they purchase a meal of the day in a Morrisons café.

Customers can continue to earn points when shopping at Morrisons Market Street counters, where trained and skilled colleagues prepare fresh food, daily.  Offers include 100 points on sweet treats like brownies, doughnuts and a variety of loaves at the bakery and 500 points when customers buy three products at the Deli counter.

Morrisons Fish Fridays and Steak Saturdays, where More Card customers can get 20% off fresh fish or British steaks from the Market Street counter are also continuing following positive feedback from customers. (EDITOR: Steak Saturdays? Time for a trip to our local Morisons at the weekend, I think!)

Also, Morrisons is reducing over 170 prices across the store this week. That's its eighth round of price reductions this year, so far.

Since January, Morrisons has committed to having over 1,000 prices lowered and locked every week to help tits customers plan their budgets without worrying unduly about price fluctuations.

Rachel Eyre, who is Chief Customer and Marketing Officer at Morrisons, said: “Customers tell us September is a chance for them to ‘reset’ and try new routines after the more expensive summer months.

"We also know saving for Christmas is already on their minds and so we've launched ‘More Month’  to help.  We’ve added industry leading exclusive offers to items our customers buy weekly, plus products to stock up on ahead of the festive season.  Customers can also benefit from More Points on branded and own brand products and on top of that we are continuing to cut prices across our stores.”

Morrisons More Card launched in May 2023 and gives loyal customers even More Reasons to shop at Morrisons.  Customers can earn points on selected products and counters in store and online as well as 5 points for every 1 litre of fuel purchased in a Morrisons petrol filling station.

As well as More Card Exclusive offers, customers are rewarded with regular, personalised deals on the categories they say matter most to them including meat, dairy and impulse buys.  Once a customer has saved 5,000 points, they earn a Morrisons Fiver which they can also opt to save for a special occasion or convert to Fivers straight away.

More Month offers are available in all of Morrisons 499 supermarkets and the majority of products can be found online, too.

Morrisons offers customers double more card points for every litre of fuel purchased

Morrisons is offering its customers double More Card points on every litre of fuel purchased to help them make more savings with their weekly shop.

From today, Monday 14th August until Monday 28th August, customers can earn 10 points per litre of fuel purchased with no minimum spend in store necessary. The scheme runs across the bank holiday weekend, too, so those filling up for their travels can get more for their money.

Customers must have a Morrisons More Card membership to be able redeem the deal and must simply scan their card at the point of the transaction to qualify.

Morrisons launched the More Card loyalty scheme earlier this year to allow customers to earn More Points on selected products in store, online and on fuel. When reaching ,5000 points, customers will be rewarded with a ‘Morrisons Fiver’ that can be spent in-store or online.

Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer & Marketing Officer at Morrisons, said: “Fuel is a vital, necessary purchase for many of our customers on a weekly basis. By offering double More Points at our fuel pumps, we're helping customers build up their points so they can be rewarded with Morrisons Fivers to reduce the cost of their weekly shop.”

Please note: This offer excludes any franchised Morrisons Daily petrol stations.

(EDITOR: Although not strictly a "food" story, I decided to include it because many people we know who shop at Morrisons do have and use More Cards and do buy fuel at Morrisons when they are doing the weekly or monthly grocery shop.)

Morrisons launches new support package for British farmers to cover rising costs of growing crops

What with rising energy prices, increased fertiliser costs and other price rises, our farmers have certainly being feeling the pinch lately.

As a result, Morrisons has taken the decision to launch a new support package for British farmers to cover the costs of growing crops.

In fact, Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to launch a support package that underwrites 100% of the costs associated with growing crops.

The retailer, which has over 1,200 branches throughout England, Scotland and Wales, has invested £2 million in a year-long trial and potato and carrot farmers are the first to benefit under the scheme.

The trial will help British farmers mitigate the cost and weather pressures coming from the peaks and troughs of the seasons, including field rent and fertiliser costs and gives farmers greater financial security with Morrisons shouldering all the risks.

Crops are currently being grown on three potato farms and one carrot farm with the first produce from these farms due to hit the shelves before year's end and into 2024. If successful, Morrisons hopes to roll out this scheme to more farms later next year.

Morrisons already supports farmers by buying whole crops and picking out any fruit or veg that's perfectly fine to eat but has a quirky shape or a surprising size for its Naturally Wonky range.

Launched back in 2015, Morrisons Naturally Wonky fruit and veg helps reduce food waste in the field and offers affordable produce to its customers. It also provides farmers an alternative route to market. The range includes 24 wonky varieties, and 27,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables were sold this way last year alone.

Gareth Cosford, who is Morrisons' Senior Buying Manager for Root Vegetables said: “As British farming’s biggest direct customer we understand the impact higher costs are continuing to have on Britain's farmers. As a result, our trial scheme allows us to take all the risks that are associated with growing the crop away from our farmers and continue to grow the best quality British produce our customers know, love and have come to expect.”

Participating farms so far include Naish Farms Ltd. which grow potatoes for Morrisons.

Andrew Nash, who is a Director at Naish Farms Ltd. said: “Morrisons already buy our whole crop of potatoes from us, taking the top-quality and also the misshapen or the oversized ones and making them available to customers as part of their naturally wonky range. This not only maximises our return, it also offers the best value to their customers.

“In farming there are ups and downs throughout the seasons. For us we are seeing greater weather challenges which could impact our crops and by being part of this new Morrisons trial, they’re underwriting our growing costs to cushion us from the associated risks and provide supply security so  we can focus on growing the very best potatoes for their customers.”

Interestingly, Morrisons is British farming’s biggest direct supermarket customer and works directly with over 2,700 farmers and growers all year round to ensure customers can purchase products of the highest quality.

This week Morrisons is continuing to support the industry by sponsoring Farm 24, farming's biggest event which highlights the pride of the nation’s food producers. For more information, please visit: https://www.morrisons-farming.com/backing-british/farm24

Some shoppers believe that the Morisons Naturally Wonky fruits and vegetables actually taste better, as they remind them of the "real" fruit and vegetables their parents and grandparents used to be able to buy before the authorities decided that all fruits and vegetables should have uniform size, weight and appearance.

What do you think? Wonky or not?

Green first for Morrisons as it becomes first UK supermarket to introduce coffee pod recycling points

There's some exciting news for ecologically-minded shoppers as Morrisons is becoming the first UK supermarket to introduce coffee pod recycling points at its stores.

The return bins from coffee pod recycling scheme ‘Podback’ is launching in 29 stores this month.

Used aluminium and plastic pods will be turned into new products including drinks cans, plastic crates and garden furniture.

The move which is being trialled in 29 stores is in partnership with Podback, the specialist pod recycling service.

In an effort to make coffee pod recycling even easier and more convenient, Morrisons is trialling a new drop-off service which allows customers to collect their Podback recycling bags, fill them up with their used pods, and recycle in a dedicated bin which will be sited at the front of the store.

Last year, Morrisons announced it was the first supermarket to support Podback and remains the only one to provide free coffee pod recycling bags for its customers to collect in all of its stores. The recycling bags can be filled at home and be taken to one of 6,500 Yodel drop off points around the UK with all postage covered by Podback.

Over the last year, it's estimated 800 million coffee pods were bought in the UK, making it even more important than ever for customers to have an easier route to recycle their pods.

Morrisons is also set to become a dedicated Podback member, meaning Morrisons own-brand pods can all be recycled through the scheme, besides 24 other pod brands across the coffee sector.

Customers need to use correctly colour coded bags, there's one for aluminium pods and one for plastic pods. This is because pods are separated and sent to different recycling processing plants in the UK.

Through Podback, used aluminium pods are turned back into aluminium ingots for new products, like beverage cans, and the used plastic coffee pods are turned into other plastic items,  including building products and plastic crates. And there's more! The used coffee grounds go through a special anaerobic digestion process, which makes useful biogas and soil improver.

Natasha Cook, who is the Sustainable Packaging and Plastics Manager at Morrisons, said: “We’re excited to be launching this trial with Podback as we look to make it even easier for our customers who want to brew fresh coffee at home to recycle their used coffee pods. Now they can grab a Podback bag, fill it at home and just drop it off on their next store trip.”

Rick Hindley, the Executive Director at Podback, said: “Morrisons was the first supermarket to become a supporter of Podback and we’re thrilled that they’re now set to become a member; enabling their own brand pods to be recycled through the service and working with us to further improve access to coffee pod recycling by trialling a new drop-off system.

"This is another exciting step forward towards providing consumers with easy and convenient ways to recycle their used coffee pods. We also welcome and encourage other retailers to join Podback and make it even easier for consumers to recycle pods in the future.”

Morrisons stores across the UK currently offer soft plastic, battery and inkjet recycling facilities. Since 2017 Morrisons has reduced its own brand plastic packaging in its 499 stores by over 10,000 tonnes a year.

Morrisons to help fund fishing apprenticeships with £100k funding

The Morrisons supermarket is transferring an Apprenticeship Levy fund of over £100,000 to Supplytrain to help train ten new sea fishers for the South Western Fish Producer Organisation (SWFPO).

The £100k will support the first fisher apprenticeship programme in England. The 18 month apprenticeship allows students to get vital hands-on experience and learn more about the whole fishing operation from sea to sale.

As an apprentice, students will be employed by Supplytrain, but will be able to work across different boats within the SWFPO membership, catching different types of fish and learning from experienced crew members whilst they are also studying seamanship, gear construction and how to care for the catch at South Devon College.

The life of a commercial fisher is obviously very physically demanding but immensely rewarding, providing the skills and opportunities to become an experienced deckhand, skipper, marine engineer or even a future vessel owner, too.

The Government Apprenticeship Levy is paid by employers to help fund apprenticeship programmes and Morrisons has agreed to transfer £100,000 of its funds to pay for the SWFPO’s first cohort of ten apprentices. The deadline for applications is 31st July and the first cohort will begin their programme this September.

Morrisons has supported craft apprenticeships in its stores including Fishmongers, Butchers and Bakery roles. Over 2,500 colleagues in-store have completed the programme to date with a further 200 apprentices planned to enrol in September.

Sophie Jenkinson, who is Morrisons' Sustainable Sourcing and Fisheries Manager said: “The fishing industry is a vital and integral part of Morrisons and that's why we’re pleased to be supporting and backing Supplytrain and SWFPO by transferring some of our Apprenticeship Levy to help recruit and train the sector.”

Juliette Hatchman, SWFPO's CEO said: “Recruitment is a real issue across the entire fishing industry now, with an ageing demographic and a shortage of skilled crew. A lack of skilled crew has a significant impact on the entire seafood supply chain.

"The catching sector is the start of the supply chain, so without boats going to sea, there is no supply chain. SWFPO members are not alone in facing challenges with attracting the right personnel. This apprenticeship is a great way to grow new talent within our industry by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified resource that the whole industry will ultimately benefit from.

"Not only does it improve the attractiveness of the sector as a professional and valuable career pathway, but improves safety within the sector, all of which make it a much needed and extremely worthwhile investment.”

Phil Golding, MD at Supplytrain said: “It’s fantastic to have Morrisons as a partner supporting the first ever Fisher Apprenticeship in the country. As a flexi-job apprenticeship agency, we’re obviously really excited to be able to employ and support fresh talent to start a career in this rewarding industry, and hope this is the first of many cohorts in the years ahead.”

In 2021 Morrisons acquired Falfish, a sustainably sourced seafood wholesaler which is based in Cornwall. To date, Falfish supply the majority of Morrisons fish and shellfish that's then freshly prepared by Morrisons fishmongers who are based in-store.

Bags better for everyone! Tesco and Morrisons welcome the Universal Bag

Marking a massive milestone in the global rollout of the Universal Bag project, Tesco and Morrisons are the next two UK partners.

Designed by Anya Hindmarch and manufactured by the Solent Group, The Universal Bag is reportedly the next generation of reusable bag; a desirable, durable, reusable, 100% recycled and recyclable shopping bag that's designed for everyone, to take everywhere, for just about everything or anything.

Working in collaboration with major global food retailers, the Universal Bag has the laudable aim of driving meaningful change across the entire industry.

While use of single use plastic has reduced dramatically, with sales falling in the main supermarkets by 95% between 2021 to 2022, says lates official figures, the problem is far from solved. Nearly half a billion single use plastic bags were still sold between 2021 to 2022 and the ‘bag for life’ isn't th environmental solution we'd all hoped it would be.

However, since launching The Universal Bag project collaboratively over 150 tonnes of virgin plastic has been saved from landfill, the equivalent of over 12 London double decker buses.

The Tesco version, available from the end of July in 250 stores nationwide, will be available in their core brand colours of blue with red handles, while the Morrisons version, available from mid-September in 400 stores all over the country, will be in their core brand colours of yellow with green handles.

These versions of the Universal Bag are the seventh and eighth editions respectively and add to the growing global line up, following Asda, Co-op, Sainsburys, Selfridges Food Hall and Waitrose in the UK, City’SUPER in Hong Kong and National Azabu in Japan. More global partners will be announced later on this year.

Incidentally, Morrisons was the first UK supermarket to introduce paper ‘bags for life’ instead of plastic and has also committed to using 50% less plastic packaging in its own-brand products by 2025.

Working together with retailers with such impact, scale and ambition gives the opportunity to make meaningful changes and inspire long lasting shifts in consumer habits.

Both the Tesco and Morrisons versions will retail at £10 each.

The project, open to all food retailers worldwide, allows each partner to create their own exclusive version of the Universal Bag in keeping with their own brand requirements.

The Universal Bag is made from 100% recycled plastic and each step and material used in making the bag has been fully certified under the Global Recycling Scheme (GRS) making this a truly 100% recycled product.

Each Universal Bag is guaranteed to last for ten years having been extensively tested for durability.

The Universal Bag features an innovative, convenient freepost returns pocket built into a pocket inside the bag. You simply turn the bag into its built-in pocket which acts as a pre-addressed envelope and then post it through a letter box. It's then 100% recycled locally.

In addition to being practical the Universal Bag is designed to be durable, too. By creating a bag  customers feel excited to be seen with and are motivated to take care of, reuse is expected to increase, tackling one of the major issues surrounding shopping bags.

Anya Hindmarch, Founder and Creative Director, comments: “The Universal Bag project has saved over 150 tonnes of virgin plastic from landfill so far, the equivalent weight of over 12 London double decker buses. Plastic pollution remains a pressing environmental issue but working together with major global food retailers shows how the solution needs to collaborative.”

Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer and Marketing Officer, Morrisons, adds: “We’re really thrilled to partner with Anya Hindmarch on the Universal Bag project and support such an important, vital issue. We are committed to reducing our plastic use and we were the first supermarket to introduce paper ‘bags for life’. It’s an issue our customers and colleagues are extremely passionate about so we're very excited to see the Morrisons x Anya Hindmarch tote land in our stores and we will be proud to spot it out and about, too!”

Ashley Simons, the Solent CEO, opined: “Both Anya and Solent have a shared heritage in creating and producing market disrupting initiatives that help customers to lead healthier, more sustainable lives. We are delighted to have partnered with Anya and her team on the Universal Bag which further supports the reduction and need for single use plastics. The Universal Bag is a beautiful and high performing product that encourages customers to buy into reusability and sustainability.

"It’s not a bag you’d ever feel comfortable throwing in the bin. Given the durability of the bag, ideally, it will never need to be recycled but, if it does, we have made it easy for the customer to get it back into the recycling stream, a process we believe has never been done before. The Universal Bag is a true market first and another step change in our mission to end single use plastic bag usage for one and for all.”

Looks like it'll be a great way to take your food and drink shopping back home with you, or to take your picnic to the beach and then back home again!
