My Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake

This is my My Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake. Necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention.

I recently bought a bunch of bananas from a discount supermarket. I ate one and several days later I decided to eat another, only to find that they had ripened to such an extreme extent that they could have worked as extras in the film The Blackness!

My wife and I both despise wasting food (if we really can't make use of something we compost it) so I decided to employ my inventive side to save the day.

I used a combination of ingredients from our pantry plus several others that I bought from Morrisons. (Morrisons is not the supermarket were I bought the bananas from, by the way.)

Ingredients:-
Ripe(!) bananas
Two tubs of Morrisons full fat cream cheese
The rest of a pot of double cream from the fridge
Packet of Butterscotch flavoured Angel Delight
A handful of Pearl Sugar (an Amazon overstock item bought from a local charity shop)
Sufficient milk to soften the mixture
Half a packet of crushed broken biscuits from the pantry
1/4 of a tub of Morrisons spreadable butter

Mix the spreadable butter with the crushed biscuits and place in a combination over in a metal or glass bowl, for 200c for about 10 to 15 minutes. Several times use a wooden spoon to make sure the base is properly mixed together.

Eventually, squash the mix down and then leave to cool.

Whilst it is cooling mash the ripe bananas and when they are fully mashed add the cream cheese, making sure it's all mixed in.

Then add the Angel Delight being careful to make sure all the powder is properly mixed in. At this stage add enough milk to make sure the mixture is not too thick.

Then mix in the Pearl Sugar.

Place the mix into the fridge and when the base is sufficiently cooled top it with the cheesecake mixture and return this to the fridge and allow it to properly chill.

I did think about adding some Bailey's Irish Cream, or Amarula instead of the milk, but after tasting the mixture part way through I decided against this. You could add the liqueurs, though, if you wished.

The result? A really delicious Emergency Banana Cream and Butterscotch Cheesecake!

We mentioned buying Amazon overstocks and the like in a previous post on our sister site, That's Christmas. That was how we bought a number of pots of Pearl Sugar, several boxes of breakfast cereals and some new Christmas decorations!

"Why Charity Shops are a Hidden Gem for Amazon Returns and Overstock Deals at Christmastime"

Actually, nearer to Christmas the above recipe with the addition of traditional Christmas spices would make a reasonably light Christmastime dessert treat.

The Advantages of Ordering Groceries from Amazon in the UK

In recent years, online shopping has transformed the way we buy essentials, including groceries.

Among the various online platforms available, Amazon has emerged as a prominent player in the UK market.

Known for its vast selection and efficient delivery, Amazon offers numerous advantages when it comes to ordering groceries.

Here’s a look at why you might consider making Amazon your go-to for grocery shopping.

1. Convenience and Time-Saving

One of the biggest advantages of ordering groceries from Amazon is the convenience. You can shop from the comfort of your own home, avoiding the need to navigate busy supermarkets or carry heavy bags. With just a few clicks, you can have your entire shopping list delivered to your doorstep. This convenience is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules, limited mobility, or anyone who prefers to avoid the hassle of physical shopping.

2. Wide Range of Products

Amazon offers an extensive range of products, including groceries. Whether you’re looking for fresh produce, pantry staples, speciality items, or international foods, Amazon has it all. The platform provides a diverse selection from various brands, including both popular and niche products that might be hard to find in local stores. This variety makes it easier to complete your weekly shop without having to visit multiple shops.

3. Competitive Pricing and Discounts

Amazon is known for its competitive pricing, and the grocery section is no exception. The platform often offers discounts, deals, and special offers that can make shopping more affordable. For Amazon Prime members, there are additional savings and exclusive deals, making it a cost-effective option for regular grocery shoppers. Additionally, Amazon frequently offers subscriptions for recurring purchases, allowing you to save even more on items you use regularly.

4. Subscription Services and Pantry Boxes

Amazon offers convenient subscription services for products you buy regularly. With the “Subscribe & Save” option, you can set up automatic deliveries for essentials like household supplies and non-perishable food items, often at a discounted price. This ensures you never run out of your favourite products and can be a great way to manage household essentials efficiently. Additionally, Amazon’s Pantry service provides the option to fill a box with a selection of everyday items and have them delivered at a reduced shipping cost.

5. Fast and Reliable Delivery

Amazon is renowned for its efficient delivery service. With options like Amazon Fresh and Amazon Pantry, you can choose a delivery slot that suits your schedule, and receive your groceries quickly, often the next day. This is particularly advantageous for those who need items urgently or have unpredictable schedules. The option to track your order in real-time also adds a layer of convenience and reliability.

6. Eco-Friendly Options

Amazon is increasingly focusing on sustainability, offering eco-friendly and organic product options. They provide information about the environmental impact of certain products and have initiatives in place to reduce packaging waste. This allows environmentally-conscious shoppers to make informed choices and support sustainable practices.

7. Customer Reviews and Recommendations

The platform’s extensive customer review system is another significant benefit. Shoppers can read reviews and ratings from other customers before making a purchase, helping them to choose the best products. Additionally, Amazon’s recommendation system suggests products based on your shopping history, making it easier to discover new items that you might like.

8. Safety and Hygiene

In the current global climate, health and safety have become paramount. Ordering groceries online from Amazon minimises physical contact, reducing the risk of exposure to viruses and other pathogens. This is especially important for vulnerable populations or those wishing to maintain strict hygiene practices.

Conclusion

Ordering groceries from Amazon in the UK offers numerous advantages, from convenience and a wide selection to competitive pricing and fast delivery. Whether you’re looking to save time, find speciality items, or simply make your shopping experience more pleasant, Amazon provides a comprehensive solution. As online grocery shopping continues to grow, Amazon remains a reliable and efficient option for UK consumers.

Discovering Japan: Foods and Groceries from Amazon’s New Japan Store

Japan, a country renowned for its rich culinary heritage and exquisite flavours, offers a tantalising array of foods that can now be conveniently delivered to your doorstep, thanks to Amazon’s new Japan Store.

This online marketplace has made it easier than ever for those of us in the UK to indulge in authentic Japanese groceries without leaving home. Here’s a peek at some of the culinary treasures you can find.

1. Savoury Snacks

Japanese snacks are a world unto themselves, blending traditional tastes with innovative twists. On Amazon’s Japan Store, you’ll find favourites like Pocky – those delightful chocolate-coated biscuit sticks that come in a variety of flavours, including matcha and strawberry. Another popular choice is Senbei, traditional rice crackers that can be sweet or savoury, often wrapped in a thin layer of seaweed.

2. Instant Ramen

Instant ramen is a staple of Japanese convenience cuisine, and the offerings from brands like Nissin and Maruchan go far beyond your typical supermarket fare. Varieties include rich, creamy tonkotsu (pork bone broth), spicy miso, and shoyu (soy sauce) ramen, each delivering a satisfying, authentic taste of Japan.

3. Traditional Sweets

For those with a sweet tooth, Japan’s confectionery scene is a wonderland. Mochi – soft, chewy rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste or fruit flavours – are a must-try. You’ll also find Dorayaki, fluffy pancake-like sweets filled with anko (sweet red bean paste), and a range of KitKat bars in exotic flavours such as matcha green tea, wasabi, and sakura (cherry blossom).

4. Seasoning and Condiments

Japanese cooking is defined by its unique condiments and seasonings. Stock up on essentials like soy sauce, mirin (a sweet rice wine used in cooking), and miso paste. You’ll also find furikake, a seasoning blend often sprinkled over rice, which can include dried fish, sesame seeds, seaweed, and more. Kewpie mayonnaise, with its distinctively rich and tangy flavour, is another Japanese staple worth trying.

5. Rice and Noodles

No Japanese pantry is complete without high-quality rice and noodles. Amazon’s Japan Store offers premium sushi rice, perfect for making your own sushi rolls at home. You can also find soba (buckwheat noodles) and udon (thick wheat noodles), which are perfect for a variety of hot and cold dishes.

6. Tea and Beverages

Japanese tea culture is celebrated worldwide, and now you can easily purchase a range of authentic teas. Matcha, a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, is renowned for its health benefits and unique flavour. You can also explore other traditional teas like sencha and genmaicha. For a refreshing drink, try Ramune, a popular carbonated beverage available in various fruity flavours.

7. Cooking Kits

If you’re new to Japanese cuisine, consider starting with a cooking kit. These kits often include all the ingredients and instructions needed to prepare traditional dishes such as sushi, takoyaki (octopus balls), or okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes). They’re a great way to explore new flavours and cooking techniques.

Conclusion

Amazon’s new Japan Store is a gateway to experiencing the diverse and delectable world of Japanese food from the comfort of your home. Whether you’re a seasoned fan of Japanese cuisine or a curious newcomer, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. From savoury snacks to authentic seasonings, these groceries bring the essence of Japan’s culinary artistry to your kitchen. So why not take a culinary journey to Japan today and discover the delightful flavours that await?

Are You Taking the Phizz?

Phizz are taking on Berocca as the UK's fastest growing effervescent brand; the young, science-led team works with a PhD neuroscientist to develop innovative all-in-one health supplements, formulated to support daily wellbeing, exercise, travel, and nights out. This month, September, sees the rollout of Phizz's first Out of Home Campaign, which will run until the 24th of this month.

What is the objective of the campaign? It's simply to drive brand awareness across London and to support the launch of Phizz Caffeine Boost in Tesco Express. Bringing the brand to life across a variety of touchpoints and platforms to maximise brand awareness, impact and campaign longevity.

With an expected reach in excess of 7 million, taking advantage of the return to office working and September's back to school season, the campaign includes advertising across three high impact mega screens including Canary Wharf, Westfield Shepherds Bush and Westfield Stratford; advertising across 50 food delivery bikes in Zone 1, Central London; 32 further mega screens will run for the full two weeks across zones 1 and 2.

Phizz have also created 500 magnetic clings, pavement stencils and sampling bins, the team will be distributing sample product across London for the next couple of weeks. Lastly, Phizz has partnered with Gymfluencers to create 100 bespoke Phizz Caffeine fitness influencer boxes, to enhance social media awareness in tandem with the campaign.

Phizz Founder Dan Cray says, "In 2023, Phizz has soared to third place within the effervescent category, and with our recent debut in Tesco Express, we decided the time was ripe to take our visibility to even new heights.

"With distribution now spanning over 4,500 national locations, we're embarking on an ambitious journey. Expect impactful ATL campaigns and exciting activations with renowned brands like Gymshark. This marks just the beginning of our significant growth.

"Our launch to Tesco Express is our first time in this convenience store format. The launch has been driven from the strong rate of sale nationwide in superstores. Tesco now sees a strong fit for Phizz to support non-stop city lifestyles.”

Phizz are also launching Orange, Mixed Berry, Apple & Blackcurrant Effervescent tabs to Morrisons. The brand will launch with a £6 promo running until 17th October, before retailing at £8.00 per tube of 20 tablets.

Founder Dan Cray went on to say: “Morrison's decision to include Phizz in their range reinforces our position as the fastest-growing brand in the category. We're obviously pleased and utterly thrilled to introduce our unparalleled benefits in an array of delicious flavours, aiming to elevate lives across the nation.”

Here are some details about the range:-

The new Cherry Caffeine Boost, a triple-action energy boosting effervescent, aims to combat the major cause of fatigue: dehydration. Available now from Amazon and Tesco. The ground-breaking formula, a global first, aims to optimise natural energy levels, combat fatigue and drowsiness, and deliver a daily dose of invigorating wellness.

We wake up every day with two basic health goals, to eat a well-rounded diet that achieves all our nutritional requirements and to drink enough water; busy modern lifestyles, travel and high-performance sport all get in the way of achieving these goals, and without optimal nutrients and hydration, you're not your best self. 94% of the UK is dehydrated, on average, consumers drink just 850ml of water per day – less than half of the recommended daily intake. A 2% drop in hydration leads to mental and physical fatigue.

With 75mg of caffeine, equivalent to a cup of coffee, and fortified with natural guarana, it heightens alertness and invigorates the mind and body. By adding Guarana to their tried-and-true formula, Phizz harnesses the Amazonian berry's energy boosting properties that can help to increase attention and alertness; it has more caffeine per berry than any other plant (even coffee beans) and it's also packed full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Guarana gives a slower releasing and longer lasting caffeine effect than caffeine from tea and coffee, providing a smoother energy release.

Further enhanced by a potent blend of essential B-vitamins, it unlocks the body's natural energy resource by helping convert food into energy. The low calorie (10kcal) tablet's energy proposition is complemented by a range of 17 essential nutrients for optimal health. Phizz Caffeine Boost can be incorporated into your daily routine, before a sports game or gym session, as a replacement for your morning coffee or energy drink, as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or when feeling jetlagged after a flight, making Phizz your new best friend.

“At Phizz, we provide comprehensive solutions with unmatched science to beat any other single product in the market. This product has a fresh perspective on the energy category while ensuring optimal hydration and health. And at only 40p per drink, we offer solid science at great value,” explains Daniel Cray, CEO and founder of Phizz.

The London-based start-up creates everyday life armour with their trio of 3-in-1effervescent tablets that combine a hydration formula, electrolytes, and a comprehensive multivitamin. The young, science-led team works with a PhD neuroscientist to develop innovative all-in-one health supplements that are formulated to support daily wellbeing, exercise, travel, and nights out. Unlike other effervescent brands, Phizz is both a multivitamin and a rehydration remedy, helping you thrive every day across three main lifestyle pillars:

Hydration

Dehydration and vitamin deficiencies are two common, daily challenges that can negatively affect our physical and mental performance. Just 1-2% dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and concentration loss. (EDITOR: It certainly does! And it's very, very painful!)

Electrolyte Replenishment

Phizz contains a range of key electrolytes to support heart, brain, nerve, and immune system function. These include four of the main electrolytes lost through sweat which helps prevent cramping and muscle fatigue.

High Dose Multivitamin

Phizz offers eighteen essential vitamins and minerals for natural energy, reduction in fatigue, normal functioning of the immune system, mental performance, and antioxidants to prevent cellular damage.

Phizz 3-in-1 is a small but mighty tablet (available in Orange, Apple & Blackcurrant and Mixed Berry), that helps you get one step ahead of your immune, energy, focus and hydration goals.

Phizz's science-backed formula helps you hydrate three times faster (compared with drinking water alone), delivers natural energy, and supports your immune system. Just dissolve one tablet in a glass or bottle of water (best served chilled!).

Phizz is perfectly balanced with 18 quality and high-dose vitamins and minerals designed to boost your natural energy (thanks to a B-12 and B-6 vitamin hit, 375% of your daily dose of immune-boosting vitamin C (the equivalent of three oranges) and electrolytes, often lost through sweat. Phizz also packs a self-care punch with zinc (more than in three cups of spinach), potassium (more than in one banana) as well as other powerful antioxidants .

Phizz is ideal as part of your everyday routine. It's diverse range of uses also support more targeted needs, including combating tiredness and fatigue, supporting an active lifestyle – such as marathon training – rapid rehydration after a big night, beating jetlag and supporting your body in hot climates.

Dehydration can have significant effects on physical performance, particularly during endurance events where large volumes of water can be lost through sweat. Phizz helps the body hydrate faster while also replacing key electrolytes to support muscle function. Drinking Phizz during, or prior to, exercise can therefore reduce fatigue, cramps, and thirst, while increasing energy and stamina. But don't just take our word for it! Phizz is rigorously vetted by medical departments and players and is chosen as their preferred hydration solution due to the superior formula. Damian Roden (High-Performance Consultant and former Premier League Head of Performance) says, “Phizz gives players a head start on the competition with the vitamins and electrolytes our players need to perform at their peak.” Phizz has supplied over 50 professional sports teams across rugby, football and cricket including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Saracens. Notable fans also include Olympic Champion Peter Reed OBE, TV personality Vicky Pattison and television presenter Andi Peters.

Although a premium option, with quality at its core, Phizz offers value against a typical energy drink at just 40p per serving. Your plastic usage is also cut down to one recyclable tube, compared with 20 one-time-use drinks containers, helping you to minimise your impact and maximise your health. Phizz has partnered with Plastic Bank, for each Phizz product purchased 1.3x its weight in plastic waste is collected, recycled and prevented from entering our oceans; collectors are paid a premium, empowering local communities across some of the world's most vulnerable coastal environments. Phizz is proud to be leading the way as the only plastic-positive effervescent tablet in the category.

Using the power of science, Phizz make all-in-one health supplements that help you thrive every day; find Phizz at Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Amazon, or buy direct from www.phizz.co.

Amazon Grocery shopping 12 years later

Back in April 2011 That's News and Drink carried the following item about Amazon: "Amazon now sells food and drink."

This is the link to the story: https://thatsfoodanddrink.blogspot.com/2011/04/amazon-now-sells-food-and-drink.html.

This is the blog post we carried twelve years ago:

"In an exciting new development, the world's most favourite online bookshop, Amazon, have started selling groceries online, too!

But not just any groceries! Visiting the groceries section of the website is pretty much like making a trip across the Atlantic and finding yourself in an American grocery store!

Because Amazon has started selling hundreds of lines that are common (and one or two that are not that common!) in American food stores!

Just some of the lines available are Pop Tarts, Root Beer, American peanut butter, Reeses' Peanut Butter Cups, Fluff, American breakfast cereals, including Lucky Charms, Pop Tarts, Cliff Bars, etc., etc.

"This is great!" said one American. I am stationed in the UK for several months and although British food is OK, we were missing some of the staples of the American grocery store. Now we can buy them in the UK, too!"

But it's not just 'American' foods that are available. Amazon also sells foods for special diets such as gluten free or foods suitable for Coeliacs or vegetarians and some foods from other countries are featured, including South Africa. Plus more snacks and candy than you knew existed!

Amazon also sells a truly stunning range of beers, wines and spirits from around the world."

We have ordered grocery items from Amazon over the years including gin liqueurs, some Scotch, speciality foodstuffs, etc. Also special treats for our parrot!

Over the years the range of available grocery items has rapidly grown and expanded, including organic vegetables, etc.

Whilst some might argue that Amazon doing this is 'wrong' and that it harms local businesses, in many parts of the UK the items that Amazon's grocery department stocks just aren't available locally, if at all.

For example, if you want to try bottles of wine from India good luck trying your nearest "posh" wine merchant! Ours "hasn't heard of Indian wines" (said in a sniffy, condescending tone) and declined to even consider the concept of bothering to find out about their availability. Oh, well. Their loss!

Because a quick search on Amazon brought up the Sula Indian Vineyard's Dindori Reserve Shiraz, 75 cl, which, at £12.33 a bottle, is a reasonable price.

So here's to the next twelve years of Amazon Grocery deliveries and also to the next twelve years of That's Food and Drink bringing you the latest news about food and drink!

What about Amazon Prime shopping?

As consumers continue to navigate through the uncertainty of the financial climate, alongside the rising cost of groceries, rent/mortgage payments, and household bills, budgets remain tighter than ever before.

The upcoming Amazon Prime Day, set to take place between July 11th-12th, can help shoppers secure some of the best possible online deals available.

But what items are historically not as competitively priced when it comes to finding the cheapest prices?

Discussing some of the items we consumers may want to steer clear of purchasing during this year's Prime Day event, Nick Drewe, retail expert and founder of online discount site wethrift.com, says: “As we navigate through the cost of living crisis, it’s important to think of events like Prime Day as an opportunity to secure the best deal on items you are already planning to buy, rather than merely spending for the sake of it, on purchases you don’t really require or need out of temptation, or the fear of missing out on some bargains."

Nick went on to say: “Bearing this in mind, here are three items I would discourage Amazon Prime subscribers from spending their money on next month, as well as the reasons why:"

Here are Nick's top hints for getting the best out of Amazon Prime:-

Televisions

Unless you are in need of a new TV due to your current set being broken or faulty, I’d suggest avoiding the temptation to purchase one brand new during Prime Day.

Brand new televisions are a hefty financial investment, and Black Friday is historically a much better time of the year to secure the cheapest deals on the latest makes and models from the likes of Samsung, Panasonic or Sony. It’s worth doing your research into the size and model that will be the best fit for your family and home life, and wait it out until November to benefit from the cheapest deal to ensure your home entertainment needs are being met.

Branded Apple products

Apple’s products are a direct competitor to Amazon’s in-house electrical goods, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to reduce their Apple offerings to a price where they are dissuading consumers from opting for their own tablets or TV fire sticks.

For those eager to secure the cheapest possible prices on new iPhones, iPads or Air Pods, it’s much more sensible to shop further afield or with Apple directly.

Home furniture

If you are currently looking to upgrade your bed, you dining table or any other large items of furniture, Prime Day deals may not be all they are cracked up to be once you take delivery fees into consideration.

When delivery fees for heavier items are added onto sale prices, the furniture that seems so appealing on screen may just turn out to be more expensive, overall. Instead, local furniture retailers, who regularly hold seasonal sales and offer special deals, may just work out cheaper in the long run, especially if you can arrange to pick up the items yourself or the delivery fees are calculated by how far away your home is located.

Commenting on how this years Amazon Prime Day event may differ from previous years, Nick adds:

“There is unfortunately no surefire, certain method to inform us of how Amazon and its retailers will choose to approach this year's Prime Day event, and on which items the very best deals are to be had.

“All we can do is look at the evidence and price points from years gone by for guidance when advising consumers looking to spend their money as wisely as possible. If a luxury item or product that traditionally hasn’t been reduced significantly in price during the event is urgently required, then of course Prime Day will offer some of the best current deals on the market. However, for things earmarked more as a ‘nice to have’ for the near future, it’s worth waiting to see how prices fare come Black Friday or during the Boxing Day sales.

“Having said all that, increasing numbers of consumers are keeping an eye on their financial budgets and spending as cautiously as possible in the current economic climate. As a result, Amazon will be aware that, in order to replicate the levels of sales and profits they’ve witnessed during historical Prime Days, they'll need to work extra hard to entice their shoppers with deals they can justify spending their hard earned money on.”

Also, look out for grocery and drink Amazon Prime Deals which are, of course, of more interest to us at That's Food and Drink!

We'd like to thank Nick and his team for helping with this feature.
