UK Craft Distillers Unit in Call for Spirits Inclusion in Small Producer Relief Scheme in Advance of Autumn Budget

In a November blog post, Liam Hirt has explicitly asked the Chancellor to extend Small Producers Relief to alcohol over 8.5%.

Currently, a lower rate of Alcohol Duty is only permitted on products with an ABV of less than 8.5%.

Hirt is arguing that the current framework unfairly excludes small producers of gin, whisky, rum, and other higher-strength drinks.

Liam Hirt told That's Food and Drink: “Duty relief for beer and cider has proven its value. It has helped small producers compete with global corporations, encouraged hundreds of new entrants, and driven diversity and innovation.

"Extending the same support to spirits would deliver exactly the same benefits - and strengthen the UK's position as a world leader in craft distilling.”

The Small Producer Relief Scheme was introduced to correct structural disadvantages faced by small drinks producers. However, by restricting eligibility to products below 8.5% ABV, it excludes the vast majority of craft spirits, which typically sit at 37.5% ABV or higher.

“This limitation discriminates against distillers and contradicts the scheme's intended purpose. There's no public health basis for this exclusion,” he added.

“A unit of alcohol in a gin is no more harmful than a unit in a beer. In fact, many spirits consumed with low or zero-sugar mixers have fewer calories than most beers or ciders. According to recent HMRC data, spirits duty receipts have fallen by up to £700 million over the past two years, despite duty increases.

"A reformed, inclusive SPR could reverse this decline by encouraging investment, compliance, and sectoral growth - boosting long-term revenues for the Treasury.”

Spirits sales now represent 38% of pub alcohol profits according to The Scotch Whisky Association, despite a smaller share of total serves, and over half of consumers report a preference for spirits when drinking out.

Hirt went on to say: “Premium and locally made spirits are key to pub profitability and consumer engagement. Giving small distilleries access to duty relief would allow more collaboration between pubs and local producers, keeping value in local communities.”

With the UK craft spirits sector continuing to grow in global reputation but facing mounting tax pressures, small producers say reform is long overdue.

“The UK's duty framework should reward innovation, not penalise it. Including spirits in Small Producer Relief would deliver fairness, drive exports, and strengthen the entire drinks ecosystem - from distilleries to pubs to the Treasury.”

Gin: From Medicine to Mocktails – The Past, Present and Future of a Classic Spirit

Gin is one of the UK’s most beloved spirits, and its story is as rich and complex as the botanicals that flavour it.

From its beginnings as a medicinal remedy to its reinvention as a trendy lifestyle drink—and now its rise in zero-alcohol form, gin has proven itself endlessly adaptable.

A Medicinal Beginning

Long before it was served with tonic and ice, gin was prized for its health benefits. Juniper berries were used for centuries as a herbal treatment for stomach and kidney issues.

Dutch doctors in the 16th century distilled these into genever, a juniper-forward spirit that quickly found its way to England. Soldiers returning from the Netherlands spread its reputation, and soon “Dutch courage” became a household term.

From Craze to Classic

Gin took London by storm in the 18th century during the infamous Gin Craze, when cheap and unregulated gin flowed through the streets. It was accessible, potent, and, for many, dangerously addictive. Following stricter controls and new distilling technology, a more refined gin emerged in the 19th century: London Dry Gin, which remains a benchmark for quality to this day.

Today’s Gin Renaissance

Fast-forward to the 21st century, and gin is enjoying an incredible revival. Craft distillers have transformed the category with unusual botanicals like lavender, sea buckthorn, and even dandelion. Gin bars and tasting menus have turned the spirit into a culinary adventure, with cocktails such as the negroni, French 75, and elderflower gin fizz now staples of modern drinking culture.

The Zero-Alcohol Revolution

Not everyone wants the buzz that comes with their G&T, and this is where zero-alcohol gins step in. Brands like Clean Co, Seedlip, Pentire, and Warner’s 0% are paving the way for sophisticated non-alcoholic options that don’t compromise on flavour. Whether you’re cutting back, going sober, or just pacing yourself on a night out, alcohol-free gin ensures you can still enjoy the ritual of a cocktail glass in hand.

The Future of Gin

Looking ahead, gin’s future is bright:

Expect more unusual botanical blends inspired by global flavours.

Sustainability will play a huge role, with eco-friendly distilling and packaging.

Health-conscious consumers will continue driving demand for alcohol-free options.

One thing is certain—whether served strong, mixed, or alcohol-free, gin will remain a staple of British drinking culture for generations to come.

Brockmans Gin Launches Limited Edition Bottle With Jewellery Artist Ling Chen, Showcasing Striking Fusion of Art and Spirit

Brockmans Gin, the B Corp-certified premium spirit known for defying convention with its Properly Improper ethos, continues its bold creative streak with the launch of an ultra-limited-edition bottle, in collaboration with visionary jewellery artist, Ling Chen, which is priced at £999 and will be available to purchase exclusively at Hedonism Wines in Mayfair.

Based in London, Ling Chen is an emerging voice in the future of conceptual adornment. Chen's debut collection, Rebellion Reimagined, transforms subcultural symbols, such as spikes, chains, slogans, and piercings into standout jewellery pieces.

Chen's designs explore the tensions between individuality and conformity through a bold deconstruction of punk aesthetics.

Each limited-edition bottle of Brockmans' flagship gin, Brockmans Intensely Smooth, will be adorned with Chen's provocative Punk Sym Rings, a bold, two-part statement piece from her debut collection. The striking sculptural ring is detachable from the bottle, so it can be worn and shown off by the owner.

Chen's Punk Sym Rings have been designed for those who like to challenge convention, with the ring reimagining punk iconography through clever mirrored spiked geometry.

Fierce, rebellious and uncompromising, the limited-edition bottle fuses Brockmans' disruptive attitude with Chen's punk aesthetic. The limited-edition Brockmans Gin bottle will be unveiled for the first time at an exclusive launch at London's Creative Jewellery Hub, Forge, on Tuesday 8th July.

Tastemakers from the worlds of fashion, jewellery, culture, and drinks will be welcomed into a Brockmans Gin takeover where the bottles will be unveiled for the first time, while enjoying Brockmans' high-quality, unmistakably smooth, bold gin, which have earned the brand such a loyal following.

Ling Chen, Jewellery Artist, said: “I am beyond thrilled to be launching my collection at Forge in the centre of the Hatton Garden's Jewellery community with Brockmans Gin. The properly improper philosophy of Brockmans Gin suits my punk aesthetic and my sense of direction which I share with many of the On|Off designers.”

Jean-Dominique Andreu, Managing Director of Brockmans Gin, told That's Food and Drink: “Brockmans Gin and Ling Chen are provocateurs in both our respective worlds. We both challenge convention, celebrate creativity, and take pride in doing things differently.

"This collaboration was born out of a shared creative vision of bold design, disruptive spirit, and cultural expression. We're proud to be partnering with such a fearless designer and we are excited to unveil these ultra limited-edition bottles.”

This partnership sees the next chapter in Brockmans' visionary cultural partnership with On|Off, the pioneering platform championing innovation in British fashion. The partnership has so far seen the bold British brands collaborate on a series of standout cultural moments, including its London Fashion Week Opening Party at the W Hotel and The Disruptors exhibition at Fitzrovia Chapel.

Lee Lapthorne, the Director of On|Off, has the ability to spot future talent having supported many of our major creative talents at the start of their careers, including JW Anderson (Dior), Gareth Pugh, Christopher Raeburn and Roksanda.

Lee Lapthorne Director of On|Off commented: “As soon as I saw Ling Chen's work, I knew it was something special, outstanding and visually arresting. Her punk-esque attitude aligns perfectly with the ethos and spirit of Brockmans Gin. The sculptural pieces she's created are not only striking additions to the Brockmans bottle but are also wearable — bold, statement accessories that bring attitude and artistry to any personality.”

James Maynnequin? James May Puts on Spirited Display in John Lewis Window

James May put on quite the display today at the Waitrose Food Hall, in John Lewis Oxford Street.

May attempted his own version of the Kate Moss for Topshop window stunt by straddling two giant parsnips and shouting out 'buy my gin.'

Bemused shoppers stopped to see what all of the commotion was about.

From travelling the world and road-testing the world's greatest cars as part of the presenting team on Top Gear and The Grand Tour, to co-owning a pub in Wiltshire, from being sacked from every job he's ever had, to eating bull's bits with Gordon Ramsey, he's now driven into Waitrose Food Hall, in John Lewis Oxford Street with a gin he has made from….wait for it….British parsnips.

James May told That's Food and Drink: "You can buy many things on Oxford Street - from expensive clothes to some, frankly, rubbish souvenirs.

"But until now, ridiculously, you couldn't buy gin made with parsnips. Obviously that had to change, so I've teamed up with Waitrose and their flagship John Lewis Store to bring the Gin of the People to the People of The West End."

John Vine, Waitrose Spirits Buyer added: "James Gin isn't your typical celebrity brand. James has been genuinely deeply involved in both the development and marketing stages from day one. These are flavours crafted with obsessive care and genuine expertise.

"The team's built a massive following around James and his 'Planet Gin' universe, and we're really thrilled to collaborate in making world-class gin more accessible to a new generation of drinkers."

So, the next time you're steering your trolley or walking your basket through your Waitrose Food Hall, in John Lewis Oxford Street, take a pitstop at the booze aisle. Who did it better, Moss or May?

Known for defying outdated conventions and doing things differently, Brockmans and  On|Off are two bold British brands united by creativity, style, and a mission to shake things up.

This partnership not only reinforces Brockmans' rebellious DNA, but also promises a year of innovative collaborations and unapologetic self-expression, a true celebration of British style and imagination.

James May - Launches California Dreamgin' - a Vegan Gin Made With Mushrooms & Patchouli

James May has spent a considerable amount of time in California, driving around in fast cars, mostly at other people's expense  (note: see the opening credits of 'The Holy Trinity' the first episode of The Grand Tour).

Now he's been back for a different reason: “Selling my Gin of the People to the Land of the Free.”

Inspired by the Californian's laid-back lifestyle, sunny climate and the fact that Californians seem to drink more of his gin than anyone else, James decided to work with Hugh at Downton Distillery to create a brand new flavour to add to the James Gin collection.

California Dreamgin' - distilled with mushroom and patchouli can be perfectly paired with tonic, a slice of counterculture, and a dash of peace and love.

It joins a range that includes Asian Parsnip, American Mustard and London Drizzle, (inspired by the smell of rain on London pavements.) However, this is the first time one of James' creations has been officially certified vegan.

As James explains: "California Dreamgin' is a compassionate, plant-based product certified by the Vegan Society and it's based on mushrooms, since mushrooms are a vital source of protein for those who have recognised that meat is murder. However, it should not be used as a dietary supplement or part of a balanced programme of food intake. It's more of a gin, man.”

Initially created as a bit of fun and to stand on the back bar of the pub he co-owns in Wiltshire, James Gin's batches consistently sell out on www.jamesgin.com, serving online customers in over 40 countries, worldwide.

The range is now also available through selected retailers, pubs and bars in the UK and the US.

James May's Planet Gin YouTube Channel now has over 300k subscribers and the brand's social media channels have attracted over 7 million followers.

James May goes on to say: “This gin is a bit of thank you - it celebrates California's role in the establishment of the hippie movement while allowing us to create a very clever joke out of nothing more than an apostrophe.”

Hugh Anderson - the remarkable astute Distiller at Downtown Distillery adds: “This is a true umami gin using girolle mushrooms to provide a light fruity, yet peppery note with a hint of apricot, paired with the delicate earthy woody notes of patchouli which lingers at the back of the mouth. Oregano enhances these savoury, herbaceous notes whilst balancing out the citrusy notes from the coriander and lemon peel.”

Even before its official global launch, California Dreamgin' has been awarded a silver medal in the prestigious Spirits Business Autumn Blind Tasting Awards.

Suggested serve: 50ml California Dreamgin' over ice, topped with premium soda water. Garnish with a lemon slice.

We think this will make a food Christmas gift for the vegan gin lovers in your life. And might also be something you need for your Christmas drinks cabinet.

California Dreamin' for James May's Asian Parsnip Gin

James Gin 'Asian Parsnip',  a super-premium gin by James May,  is now available in 14 Total Wine Stores across California, following a hugely successful 'SoCal Tour' by the globe-trekking TV personality over the summer.

In excess of 1,000 James May gin fans turned up to grab signed bottles (as well as engine covers, care manuals, cookbooks and in some instances, dashboard trim) during James' various personal appearances at liquor stores and bars in August.

Best known in the US for Top Gear and The Grand Tour, many fans also know James May from his recent Amazon Shows 'Oh Cook' and 'Our Man in…'

To date, sales of James Gin in the US have been mainly via www.jamesgin.com and the partnership with Total Wine represents a significant step for the brand in building an off-trade sales presence.

States James Gin co-founder Gus Colquhuon: “James Gin had been selling extremely well online in the US, with California being the largest state by volume.

"To have Total Wine request a listing is really exciting and shows that innovation and flavour are at the heart of what the US customer wants - not to mention a twist of British humour and a dash of gin wizardry. We look forward to seeing where our new partnership with Total Wine takes us next.”

James May adds: “I've spent a lot of time in California, mostly driving around in fast cars at other people's expense. Coming back to California is a very welcome change from sitting in a freezing cold shed in England which is where we create my gins.

"Thank you to all of the Californians who demanded that Asian Parsnip was stocked at Total Wine. You have impeccable taste.”

JG01 Asian Parsnip by James Gin 40% ABV RRP $43.99 for 700ml.

It looks likely to  us that many Californian Christmas tables will be featuring some James May Gin.

Watermelon named as new alcohol flavour of choice for Summer 2024

Watermelon has been declared to be the alcohol flavour of choice for the summer of 2024. And Gen Z members are driving sales, according to new research.

Over one third of consumers opted for watermelon as their top summer flavour, passing previous and more traditional favourites, strawberry and raspberry.

And gin has been crowned Britain's top spirit, with 70% of Gen Zers opting for flavoured gins over more traditional alternatives.

The study comes as Paragon Brands extends its G’vine gin liqueur range with the launch of new product, June Watermelon.

Watermelon scored well, with over a third of Brits (37%) selecting it as their favourite summer fruit flavour for an alcoholic beverage.

According to the research of 2,000 Brits, drinkers are attracted to watermelon’s light and fruity taste (78%), its sweet flavour (46%), and its vibrant colour (35%).

Whether it’s flavoured or not, we are  nation of gin drinkers, according to the study. Gin toppled vodka (17%) and whisky (17%) to be named the UK’s favourite spirit by one in four people (25%).

As learned by the experts, the traditional stereotype of gin drinkers is evolving in line with the spirit’s booming popularity, with older female consumers no longer leading the pack.

This year, over 2024, eight in ten Brits (82%) declare themselves as gin drinkers, but it’s the younger generation driving the surge in fruity flavours, with seven in ten (69%) Gen Zers stating fruity gin tastes better than 'ordinary' gin.

Contemporary fruity twists on traditional gin have produced a wave of popularity for the spirit in young adults, with gin makers increasingly producing innovative new fruity flavours.

Paragon Brands have launched their latest gin liqueur, Watermelon June by the G’Vine collection - an inventive addition to the flourishing flavoured gin market.

Distilled, infused and made in France, June is the perfect signature creation for G’Vine, the world’s only premium gin made from grapes and vine flowers. Which sounds very interesting.

More on World Gin Day: James Gin Launches “Gin of the People” Campaign for World Gin Day

As James explains in a special introductory video, shared above in this blog post, he has set his mind against the professional advice to (in his words) hire a 'poncey advertising agency' that would cost a lot of money and therefore increase the sale price of his range of gins.

So James came up with a new, innovative way to promote his brand. He wants you, the gin lovers of the UK and the rest of the world, to make adverts for his gin. Therefore helping to formulate a “Gin of the People” social campaign.

This is a pretty genius idea, in our opinion. Details of how to get involved can be found within his video presentation, which is featured in this blog post.

To learn more about James' gins visit his site https://www.jamesgin.com

James May is a broadcaster, journalist, a trained musician, a former chorister, latterly a publican and now a gin maker. He previously worked for a time in a foundry, which is a tangential link with your author who also before becoming a journalist worked in a foundry many years ago,

Celebrating World Gin Day: A Spirited Toast to History and Innovation

It's that time of year again! So, as we raise our glasses this World Gin Day on Saturday 8th of June, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate the rich history, vibrant culture, and innovative future of one of the world’s most beloved spirits.

Gin, with its aromatic complexity and versatile character, has captured the hearts of enthusiasts around the globe.

Let’s embark on a journey through time and taste, paying homage to the spirit that continues to enchant and inspire.

The Storied Past of Gin

Gin’s story begins in the 17th century, rooted in the apothecaries and distilleries of Europe. Originally concocted as a medicinal tonic, gin quickly gained popularity beyond its curative claims. The Dutch were the first to distil a spirit flavoured with juniper berries, known as jenever. It wasn’t long before the English embraced this delightful concoction, and by the early 18th century, gin had become London’s drink of choice.

The Gin Craze of the 18th century was a period of both popularity and infamy. Cheap and widely available, gin became synonymous with urban debauchery, leading to social challenges that eventually necessitated regulation. The Gin Acts of the mid-1700s sought to curb excessive consumption and paved the way for the refined, high-quality gins we enjoy today.

A Renaissance in a Glass

Fast forward to the 21st century, and gin is experiencing a renaissance unlike any other. Craft distilleries are popping up across the globe, each with their unique spin on this classic spirit. From the traditional London Dry to the botanical-rich New Western styles, gin’s versatility allows for endless experimentation.

The UK remains at the heart of this gin revival, with a multitude of distilleries producing exceptional gins that highlight local ingredients and innovative techniques. The revival is characterised by a focus on quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability. Many distillers are now emphasising organic and locally sourced botanicals, creating gins that are as environmentally conscious as they are delicious.

Celebrating with a Perfect Serve

World Gin Day is not just about sipping a classic G&T, though that’s certainly a delightful option. It’s about exploring the myriad ways gin can be enjoyed. Whether you prefer it in a sophisticated martini, a refreshing Tom Collins, or an adventurous cocktail, there’s a gin-based drink for every palate.

For those looking to expand their gin repertoire, here are a few suggestions:

Negroni: A timeless classic, this cocktail balances gin with sweet vermouth and Campari for a bittersweet symphony.

French 75: Elegant and effervescent, this drink combines gin, lemon juice, and champagne for a celebratory touch.

Bramble: A modern creation that pairs gin with lemon juice, sugar syrup, and blackberry liqueur, evoking the essence of a British summer.

Supporting Local Distilleries

This World Gin Day, why not support your local distilleries? Many small producers offer tours and tastings, providing an opportunity to learn more about the gin-making process and the passion behind each bottle. By choosing locally crafted gins, you’re not only savouring exceptional spirits but also contributing to the sustainability and growth of artisanal producers.

A Toast to the Future

As we celebrate World Gin Day, we raise our glasses to the future of gin. The innovation and creativity within the industry promise exciting developments and new flavour experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned gin aficionado or a curious newcomer, there’s always something new to discover in the world of gin.

So, here’s to gin – a spirit with a past as rich as its flavour and a future as bright as its botanicals. Cheers to World Gin Day, a celebration of history, innovation, and the joy of a well-crafted drink.

Embrace the spirit of gin this World Gin Day and let every sip be a reminder of the history and creativity that makes gin so special. Cheers!

Exploring the Rising Tide of Japanese Gins: A Botanical Symphony

In recent years, the world of gin has witnessed a remarkable surge in diversity and innovation, with craft distilleries around the globe pushing the boundaries of tradition and flavours.

One particularly fascinating chapter in this story unfolds in the Land of the Rising Sun, where Japanese gin distillers are crafting a new narrative infused with tradition, innovation, and a rich tapestry of botanicals.

Japan, renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship and reverence for nature, brings a unique perspective to the art of gin-making. Drawing inspiration from the country's diverse flora and centuries-old cultural practices, Japanese distillers are concocting gins that captivate the senses and transport drinkers on an aromatic journey through the Japanese landscape.

At the heart of Japanese gins lie a myriad of botanicals, each carefully selected to impart distinct flavours and aromas. While juniper remains the cornerstone of most, if not all gin recipes, Japanese distillers often incorporate locally sourced botanicals to infuse their creations with a sense of terroir.

One such botanical is yuzu, a citrus fruit prized for its fragrant zest and vibrant flavour. Widely used in Japanese cuisine, yuzu lends a refreshing citrusy note to gins, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and innovation.

Another quintessentially Japanese botanical is sakura blossoms, whose delicate floral aroma evokes the ephemeral beauty of springtime in Japan. When infused into gin, sakura blossoms impart a subtle yet enchanting floral character, reminiscent of a stroll through a blooming cherry orchard.

In addition to these native botanicals, Japanese gin distillers often draw inspiration from traditional herbal remedies and culinary ingredients, such as sansho pepper, shiso leaf, and green tea. These botanicals not only add complexity to the flavour profile but also reflect Japan's rich cultural heritage and culinary diversity.

Beyond botanicals, Japanese gin distillers also place great emphasis on craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many distilleries employ traditional production methods, such as copper pot stills and small-batch production, to ensure the highest quality and purity of their spirits. This dedication to craftsmanship is evident in the smooth texture and nuanced flavours of Japanese gins, which have garnered acclaim from connoisseurs around the world.

The burgeoning popularity of Japanese gins has not gone unnoticed by the global spirits industry. In recent years, Japanese gin brands have received numerous awards and accolades, further cementing their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of gin.

As the world of Japanese gins continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: these spirits offer a tantalizing glimpse into Japan's rich cultural tapestry and its deep connection to nature. Crafting Your Own Gins at Home Using Vodka as a Base

By coincidence when we at That's Food and Drink received  the news about James May's newly released gins, my wife and I were experimenting with a DIY gin making kit.

So, we decided to run a feature on making gin at home and the result is: Crafting Your Own Gins at Home Using Vodka as a Base.

In recent years, the art of craft distilling has surged in popularity, with enthusiasts exploring unique flavors and botanical combinations in their homemade spirits.

One such endeavor is the creation of homemade gins, a process that allows for endless experimentation and customisation. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a traditional pot still or elaborate equipment to embark on this journey. With a bottle of vodka as your starting point and a selection of botanicals, you can craft your own delicious gin right in your own kitchen. So let's get into the fascinating world of DIY gin-making.

Choosing Your Base:

Vodka serves as the perfect base for crafting homemade gin due to its neutral flavour profile. It provides a clean canvas upon which you can layer your chosen botanicals, allowing their intricate flavours to shine through.

Opt for a high-quality, unflavoured vodka to ensure the best results. While some purists may insist on using a traditional grain-based vodka, others find success with alternatives such as potato or grape-based vodkas. Ultimately, the choice is yours, so feel free to experiment with different options to discover your preferred base.

Selecting Botanicals:

The magic of gin lies in its botanical blend, typically dominated by juniper berries but complemented by a diverse array of herbs, spices, fruits, and flowers. When selecting botanicals for your homemade gin, let your creativity guide you. Juniper berries are a must-have, providing the classic piney flavour that defines gin.

Beyond juniper, consider adding botanicals such as coriander seeds, citrus peels, cardamom pods, lavender, or even unconventional choices like rose petals, fresh ginger root or lemongrass. The possibilities are endless, so don't hesitate to experiment with different combinations until you find the perfect blend that suits your taste preferences.

The Infusion Process:

Infusing vodka with botanicals is where the magic truly happens. To begin, gather your chosen botanicals and add them to a clean, airtight container. There's no strict recipe to follow here, feel free to adjust the quantities based on your personal preferences and desired flavour profile.

Once your botanical blend is assembled, pour your vodka over the botanicals, ensuring that they are fully submerged. Seal the container tightly and place it in a cool, dark place to infuse. The duration of the infusion process can vary depending on the potency of your chosen botanicals and your desired flavour intensity. As a general guideline, aim for anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks, tasting periodically until you achieve the desired flavour profile.

Straining and Bottling:

Once the infusion period is complete, it's time to strain your homemade gin to remove the spent botanicals and sediment. Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth or a coffee filter and carefully pour the infused vodka through the strainer into a clean container.

Press gently on the botanicals to extract any remaining liquid, then discard the spent ingredients in your composter

Your homemade gin is now ready to be bottled and enjoyed. Transfer the strained gin into glass bottles or jars, ensuring that they are clean and airtight to preserve the freshness of your creation. Don't forget to label your bottles with the date of creation and the botanicals used, it's always satisfying to look back on your flavour experiments.

Crafting your own gin at home using vodka as a base is a rewarding and creative endeavor that allows you to tailor your spirits to your exact specifications. Whether you prefer a classic London dry style or a more adventurous botanical blend, the possibilities for experimentation are endless.

With a bit of patience and a willingness to explore different flavours, you can create unique and delicious gins that rival those found on supermarket shelves or in your pub.

So gather your botanicals, pour yourself a glass of creativity, and embark on the journey of homemade gin-making. Cheers to the art of craft distilling!

Also, we'll let you know how our first batch of gin goes. Wish us luck!

Introducing James May Gins

James May is a TV Presenter, automotive enthusiast, musician (Pendle College, Lancaster University, where he studied flute and piano) and the landlord of a pub in Wiltshire. And now he has entered the world of gin making.

But rather than just sticking his face on a bottle of gin made by someone else, he took the different, more honest path of crafting his very own uniquely different gin flavours.

His range of savoury gins tested by the enthusiastic customers at the pub he co-owns in Wiltshire, has garnered numerous awards, is now available in 41 countries, constantly sells out and has even been deemed good enough to go in the fish batter at the pub.

Mostly famed for presenting Top Gear and The Grand Tour, James, with West Countryman Gus Colquhoun and Hugh Anderson of Downtown Distillery, has created a range of truly remarkable and utterly original gins using combinations of botanicals that no-one has ever even considered before, such as -parsnip, mustard and beetroot.

Each of his gins are based on ideas from James' love of cooking and experience of global travelling. His first flavour, Asian Parsnip combines British parsnips with a hint of exotic spices.

His latest, London Drizzle, aims to recreate the uniquely British feeling of rain on a damp London summer's day. All things the British public, plus, as it turns out, a fairly large wodge of American Gin Drinkers, are keen to try.

A little bit of history. In September 2020 James became co-owner of The Royal Oak Swallocliffe in Wiltshire.

He thought it might be a great idea to create a gin for his customers. James has travelled extensively during his TV career and as a consequence, experienced a vast range of foods and flavour combinations in some fairly interesting locations.

His thinking was that as he enjoyed experimenting with cooking, so why not experiment with gin? Local man Hugh's nano-distillery is about half an hour from James' pub, and many hours were spent experimenting with different flavours.

Said James: “Originally, I'd intended to make enough to sell in the pub. But Hugh suggested a run of 1,000 litres, about 1420 bottles. That's quite a lot for a village pub, so we decided to put the gin for sale online as a signed, numbered limited edition.

"Amazingly, it sold out within days, rather than the few years I'd anticipated. Our experiment has since turned into a gin-fuelled monster. Like most things involving gin, it got a bit out of hand.”

Flavours available include: Asian Parsnip, American Mustard and London Drizzle.

Refuge Manx Rum is announced by Fynoderee Distillery

The Fynoderee Distillery is pleased to be able to announce details of Refuge Manx Rum, the second premium spirit to be launched as part of its Coastal Collection of Spirits range, the distillery’s fundraising partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which also aims to shine a light on the Manx origins of the charity.

The barrel-aged Refuge Manx Rum will be a limited-edition organic spirit launching in 2024 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Living up to its name, this very special rum is currently securely locked away in the iconic Tower of Refuge and will mature in the monument for over a year before being released for sale towards the end of next year, 2024.

It will have a very special journey for a very special cargo, electric tram, horse tram and tractor! The Fynoderee team felt the rum’s journey to the tower deserved a very special send-off from the distillery, which is based next door to the Manx Electric Railway station in Ramsey.

They were able to utilise and promote the Isle of Man’s unique Victorian transport network to navigate the challenging task of transporting their rum to the Tower. Barrels were loaded onto the Manx Electric Railway’s Goods Wagon (previously not used for several decades) to Derby Castle Station in Douglas. They were then loaded onto a horse tram pulled by “Torrin” the Clydesdale Trammer who pulled the cargo along the promenade to the War Memorial in Douglas.

Sent to the Tower?

Exploiting the last Equinox low tide of the year, the rum was then loaded onto a trailer and towed along the causeway to the Tower by tractor where it will rest, maturing in first-fill oak Bourbon casks and absorbing the unique atmosphere of the Manx stone-built tower and the mineral rich salinity of the sea air.

Refuge Manx Rum will be available to purchase from the distillery’s website with a proportion of the sales revenue being donated directly to the ENLI charity. Also, and That's Food and Drink really approves of this idea, two bottles will be donated to every one of the 238 lifeboat stations in the British Isles, to be auctioned to generate further much-needed funds for the RNLI life-saving endeavours in its very special 200th year.

The Refuge Manx Rum film

And the Fynoderee team have produced a special short film which tells the story behind Manx Refuge Rum including its relationship with the RNLI and its journey to the Tower of Refuge.

The film was premiered at Media Isle of Man’s Awards for Excellence on Thursday 16 November 2023 and can now also be viewed on the Distillery’s website at www.fynoderee.com/RNLI200

Anyone wishing to continue following the journey of Refuge Manx Rum, including release information, and to find out more about Fynoderee’s Coastal Collection of Spirits, can sign up to receive updates at https://fynoderee.com/pages/signup

Paul Kerruish, co-founder of The Fynoderee Distillery said: "When we were considering how we could make this Rum extra special, we were struck by the idea of taking it out to the Tower of Refuge to barrel age. It feels somewhat surreal now to think that we actually did it!"

He went on to say: "Every time we look out towards the Tower, often watching the waves crashing over the top, we think of our rum nestling safely inside. We're eager to find out how the unique maritime atmosphere of the tower impacts and enhances the flavours within our rum made from ‘scratch’ here on the Isle of Man and we will be undertaking progress visits to “dip” the casks and monitor how the spirit develops.

"As many locally know, the Tower was commissioned by Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI, and therefore couldn't be more apt. But we knew there'd be hurdles to overcome logistically! The journey to date has been a real community effort and we're extremely grateful for the special permissions granted to us by HM Customs and Excise and the Department of Infrastructure to make the project become reality.

"Within the film you will see many of those who helped us on the day, especially the team at Isle of Man Transport. Being able to use our heritage railways to transport the barrels provided a nostalgic nod the Island’s uniqueness that we're always so proud to promote.

"Ultimately, we hope that this very special rum will generate a significant amount for the RNLI and provide the perfect ‘Manx-made tot’ for everyone who wishes to salute all those brave RNLI crew members past and present who have saved lives at sea over the generations."

Tiffany Kerruish, co-founder of  The Fynoderee Distillery added: "As a distillery it's always our aim to celebrate and promote Manx culture and heritage through the storytelling of our products. To be able to do so with products that will generate funds for such a beloved charity is a real privilege for us and we are so excited to work with the RNLI and in collaboration with local organisations like Manx National Heritage to keep the spotlight firmly on the Island and our five lifeboat stations operating around our coastline throughout the 200 year commemorations.

"While we all wait patiently for “Refuge Manx Rum” to be ready, we hope that supporters of the charity and local Manx producers will continue to enjoy our ‘Fynoderee Manx Dry Gin – RNLI Edition” a classic gin packed with aromatic juniper and incorporating a nod to its maritime heritage with a touch sugar kelp. The gin is proving to be a very popular part of our range with buyers from the Island and further afield and we think it makes the perfect present for Christmas!"

Salcombe Gin Partners With the Heroic RNLI to Launch 'Four Seas' Gin With Every Bottle Helping Save Lives at Sea

With a love and respect for the sea at the heart of everything they do, multi-award winning Salcombe Gin is delighted to have partnered with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to launch 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin.

Commemorating the charity's upcoming 200th anniversary, the new classic London dry gin is a true celebration of British and Irish coastal community spirit.

Available now and for the next two years, every bottle of 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin will help save lives at sea, with 10% of the net price of every bottle sold proudly donated to the vital work of the RNLI.

'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin is available in a 70cl bottle, at £39.50, ABV 40% from salcombegin.com, Salcombe Gin's Dartmouth and Salcombe stores, plus via Master of Malt, Amazon and leading independent retailers throughout the country.

It's a relaxed and inclusive gin, 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin is crafted for everyday heroes, everyday occasions and for those who love to be close to the sea.  Adhering to the same exacting London Dry standard as their iconic and global award-winning citrus led Salcombe Gin 'Start Point', 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin draws inspiration from their journey around the British coastline to where the four seas that surround our island nation, the Atlantic Ocean, Irish Sea, English Channel and North Sea, all meet our shores. The same four seas served and protected by the heroic RNLI.

Beautifully balanced, 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin showcases four key botanicals and is led by lemons smoked over Scottish whisky barrel wood chips, tangy sea buckthorn from where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Cornish coast, sugar kelp foraged from the Irish sea providing a richness and a hint of salinity and elderberries from wildest Wales, giving an earthy floral sweetness.

On the nose there's zesty fresh lemons, smoky citrus and classic juniper, followed by a citrusy tang and sweetness from the sea buckthorn with underlying floral and earthy layers on the palate, too.

The finish is reportedly smooth, rich and warming, with a slightly saline tone, reminding you of its coastal influence and origin. 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin contains no colourants and no added sugar.

Appealing to gin drinkers both old and new, just serve 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin in a highball glass with four ingredients; gin, premium Indian tonic, ice and lemon or in a cocktail to showcase the subtle notes of smoked citrus and the hint of sea salt.

Like all the products in Salcombe Gin's portfolio, it contains no plastic packaging and has biodegradable cellulose tamper proof seals, 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin uses a totally natural cork and wooden stopper.

Commenting on the partnership, Co-founder and Director of Salcombe Distilling Co., Angus Lugsdin says:  “Spending years working at sea and having grown up learning to sail in Salcombe and watching with fascination as a child when the Salcombe Lifeboat was called out,  it's hard to express just exactly how thrilled I am about the collaboration between Salcombe Gin and the RNLI.

"Having spent years offshore myself and having undergoing sea survival training myself, I have the utmost respect for the RNLI and its dedicated volunteers who generously devote their time to safeguarding and rescuing lives at sea, ensuring a safer environment for us all."

Angus went on to say: “It obviously fills the Salcombe Gin team with immense pride and pleasure to join forces with the RNLI, knowing that the sale of 'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin will contribute to our coastal communities and support the RNLI in their crucial missions.  What's more, as part of our special two-year partnership, we'll also contribute 10% of the net price of every bottle sold of our Salcombe Rum 'Island Street' to the RNLI, too.”

Mark Dowie, RNLI CEO adds: “We're delighted to partner with Salcombe Gin and welcome their kind support. And because Salcombe Gin is made in my hometown, I'm obviously hoping for great things!”

Mark went on toy say: “For almost two centuries the RNLI has been saving lives at sea.  All of the essential training and equipment for our lifeboat crews and lifeguards is only possible because of the donations we receive from our generous partners and our supporters.  Our partnership with Salcombe Gin will raise vital funds to help us continue our lifesaving work.”

The perfect partnership, Salcombe Gin draws influence from the coastal vitality of Salcombe and its shipbuilding heritage.  They produce internationally acclaimed gins at their waterside distillery on Island Street in Salcombe, one of the world's only distilleries directly accessible by boat.  'Four Seas' by Salcombe Gin joins Salcombe Gin's outstanding line-up of Salcombe Gin 'Start Point', Salcombe Gin 'Rosé Sainte Marie', Salcombe Gin 'Start Point - Offshore Strength' and their exclusive Voyager Series.

Since 1824, the story of the RNLI is one of courage and dedication.  Across their almost 200-year history, RNLI lifesavers have answered the call to rescue, day or night, on calm seas or in ferocious storms.  If someone is in peril at sea, the RNLI will do all they can to save them.  Since the charity launched its first lifeboat in 1824, the RNLI has saved over 144,000 lives at sea.

Urban Rhino Gin a Massive Tonic for Rhino Charity

Urban Rhino premium London dry gin has launched a formal agreement to make a UK-based rhino charity, Waterberg Rhino UK, which supports The Rhino Orphanage in South Africa, its main beneficiary.

And if it wasn't for Waterberg Rhino UK then the gin might not even exist. Because it's all thanks to a lunch on “table 8” at a traditional old English pub!

Explains Waterberg Rhino UK trustee Belinda Chaffer: “Just a few short months ago I was delighted to meet Pete Richardson, one of the co-founders of The Rhino Orphanage in the Waterberg , which is a place very dear to our hearts.

“Pete lived in South Africa but came back home in 2018 after ten years during which time he helped establish the orphanage of which he is still an active director.

“During our first meeting, at Table 8 at The Five Bells in Wickham (A wonderful English country pub), I mentioned we have previously been supported by a gin brand and it was a shame the business was possibly closing as the founders were emigrating and had other life challenges facing them.

“Following my introduction, Pete spoke to the guys concerned and the big news is Pete's taken over majority ownership of The White Rhino Gin Company Ltd!”

And now URBAN RHINO premium London Dry Gin is once again available to buy online, with Pete and his team committing to support Waterberg Rhino UK and The Rhino Orphanage in South Africa, with 10% of the profits from sales of the gin.

With only six botanicals, the gin recipe embodies simplicity and high-quality craftsmanship, and every sip of Urban Rhino Gin is a toast to the generosity, fun, authenticity, and the power to be changemakers.

Pete says: “It's thanks to Waterberg Rhino UK Urban Rhino gin can now hopefully flourish and grow, and we do have some lofty ambitions.

“If it wasn't for Waterberg Rhino UK then Urban Rhino gin would probably not exist today, and as a co-founder of the world's first rhino orphanage I'm truly delighted to be able to support the charity and The Rhino Orphanage for all the amazing work it does.”
