Gin: From Medicine to Mocktails – The Past, Present and Future of a Classic Spirit

Gin is one of the UK’s most beloved spirits, and its story is as rich and complex as the botanicals that flavour it.

From its beginnings as a medicinal remedy to its reinvention as a trendy lifestyle drink—and now its rise in zero-alcohol form, gin has proven itself endlessly adaptable.

A Medicinal Beginning

Long before it was served with tonic and ice, gin was prized for its health benefits. Juniper berries were used for centuries as a herbal treatment for stomach and kidney issues.

Dutch doctors in the 16th century distilled these into genever, a juniper-forward spirit that quickly found its way to England. Soldiers returning from the Netherlands spread its reputation, and soon “Dutch courage” became a household term.

From Craze to Classic

Gin took London by storm in the 18th century during the infamous Gin Craze, when cheap and unregulated gin flowed through the streets. It was accessible, potent, and, for many, dangerously addictive. Following stricter controls and new distilling technology, a more refined gin emerged in the 19th century: London Dry Gin, which remains a benchmark for quality to this day.

Today’s Gin Renaissance

Fast-forward to the 21st century, and gin is enjoying an incredible revival. Craft distillers have transformed the category with unusual botanicals like lavender, sea buckthorn, and even dandelion. Gin bars and tasting menus have turned the spirit into a culinary adventure, with cocktails such as the negroni, French 75, and elderflower gin fizz now staples of modern drinking culture.

The Zero-Alcohol Revolution

Not everyone wants the buzz that comes with their G&T, and this is where zero-alcohol gins step in. Brands like Clean Co, Seedlip, Pentire, and Warner’s 0% are paving the way for sophisticated non-alcoholic options that don’t compromise on flavour. Whether you’re cutting back, going sober, or just pacing yourself on a night out, alcohol-free gin ensures you can still enjoy the ritual of a cocktail glass in hand.

The Future of Gin

Looking ahead, gin’s future is bright:

Expect more unusual botanical blends inspired by global flavours.

Sustainability will play a huge role, with eco-friendly distilling and packaging.

Health-conscious consumers will continue driving demand for alcohol-free options.

One thing is certain—whether served strong, mixed, or alcohol-free, gin will remain a staple of British drinking culture for generations to come.

Organising Pub Days Out by Bus, Train or Walking

There’s nothing quite like a great day out at a pub, be it a country inn serving Sunday roasts, a riverside pub pouring real ale, or a cosy town tavern full of history.

The best bit? You don’t need a car to enjoy them. Planning pub days out by bus, train or walking makes the trip more relaxing, sociable and eco-friendly.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to organise UK pub trips without driving, including ideas for pub walks, train routes with great pubs nearby, and how to make the most of bus journeys that take you to hidden gems.

Why Plan Pub Days Out Without a Car?

No designated driver stress – Everyone can enjoy a pint or two or sip a few cocktails.

Eco-friendly – Public transport and walking lower your carbon footprint.

Less hassle – Skip parking fees and limited spaces, especially at rural pubs.

Added adventure – Walking, riding the bus or taking the train makes the journey part of the day out.

Pub Days Out by Bus

Local bus routes often connect towns, villages and countryside pubs that you might not reach by car.

Check bus timetables – Rural services can be infrequent, so plan arrival and return carefully.

Save with passes and group tickets – Seniors, students and families can travel for less.

Make a “bus-route pub crawl” – Hop off in one village for a drink, then carry on to the next stop for lunch.

Popular example: The Coastal Clipper buses in Cornwall link seaside pubs and villages, making them ideal for a summer pub trip.

Pub Days Out by Train

UK railways are perfect for exploring pubs in towns, villages and coastal spots.

Choose scenic lines – Routes like the Settle–Carlisle line or Devon’s branch lines offer great scenery with multiple pub stops.

Walk from the station – Many pubs are within 10–15 minutes’ walk, giving you a taste of the local area.

Mind the last train home – Missing it could mean an expensive taxi ride.

Try the Cotswold Line, where charming villages with excellent country pubs are just a short stroll from the platform.

Pub Walks – The Classic Day Out

Walking to a pub combines exercise, fresh air and good food.

Riverside or canal pub walks – Follow towpaths or riverside trails to a pub garden at the end.

Circular routes – Plan a loop with a pub as the halfway reward.

Group pub walks – Join local ramblers’ groups who often finish their hikes at traditional inns.

One favourite is the Thames Path, which has countless riverside pubs dotted along the route.

Top Tips for Planning Pub Day Trips

Check food serving times — many pubs stop serving mid-afternoon, or don't serve food on some days.

Book ahead if you’re a large group.

Wear walking shoes and bring a waterproof if travelling on foot.

Carry some cash — a few rural pubs still don’t take cards.

Why Support Pubs with Days Out?

Organising bus, train or walking pub trips is more than just a fun day — it helps support Britain’s pubs, especially those in rural areas. By choosing to travel without the car, you’re also cutting emissions, exploring hidden places and enjoying the journey as much as the pint at the end.

So next week instead of driving, why not plan a UK pub day out by train, bus or on foot? You’ll discover new pubs, meet new people and turn an ordinary trip into a memorable adventure.

Bunga Is Back! Full Reimagining of Iconic Bunga Bunga as a 1990s Fever Dream – Set to Launch in September

On 18th September, the Covent Garden venue formerly called Bunga Bunga will be reopening its doors as Bunga 90, an ambitious, immersive celebration of the 1990s.

Following a bold and extensive transformation, the Drury Lane venue has been reimagined as a multi-sensory playground, offering retro cocktails and draft beers whilst, of course, keeping Bunga's signature karaoke and pizza.

Welcome to the 90s!

Bunga 90 sets the tone from your very first glance, with its ground-floor façade styled as a nostalgic video rental store with a kaleidoscope of 90s references, from SEGA Megadrives and Super Nintendos to shelves lined with VHS tapes and CRT televisions looping iconic trailers from the era.

Guests can belt out karaoke favourites from cult 90s films before stepping through the infamous 'Adults Only' curtain, revealing a mysterious, long-forgotten time-travel movie, Bunga 90 within the PEPSI Time Machine.

The immersion is clear as memories of renting a film on a Friday night come flooding back, and the scent of popcorn fills the air. As the VCR behind the curtain inevitably malfunctions, the screen glitches and visitors are pulled into a whirlwind journey back to the decade that defined a generation

Back in time

On exiting the back of the video store guests emerge into a lovingly recreated 1990s Anglo-American family home with chintzy furniture, family holiday snaps and the unmistakable drone of dial-up noises setting the scene. Descending into the basement, visitors pass through a teenager's bedroom filled with fairy lights, teen idol posters, and Tammy Girl fashion before reaching the vibrant main bar, the beating heart of the venue. Here, a towering wall of old-school TVs plays a non-stop loop of 90s music videos, movie scenes, fashion TV and iconic adverts from back in the day.

Claw Cocktails, Arcade Madness & Toilet Raves

One of Bunga 90's show-stopping centrepieces is a giant, fully functioning arcade claw machine repurposed for cocktail creating.

Guests will take control via a joystick and assemble their own custom “Claw Cocktail”  made with Bombay Sapphire gin, Bacardi rum or Grey Goose vodka.

Elsewhere in the venue, guests will be able to try their hand at a rare Jurassic Park pinball machine, vintage arcade cabinets, and jumbo 90s handheld games.

And in a fun nod to a WrestleMania ladder match, there's a championship belt for guests to grab,  triggering dramatic ring-walk theme tunes from the eras biggest stars.

Every hour, the toilets transform into London's smallest 'M25 style' warehouse rave, created in partnership with Southern Comfort and Tequila Rose. Think UV lights, smoke bursts, glow sticks, and a blast of high octane 90s dance anthems.

Meanwhile, the toilet lobby plays host to karaoke performances, offering wannabe popstars the opportunity to serenade fellow guests as they fix their hair in the mirror.

Drinks:

The drinks list features reinvented 90s classics, think Cosmos, Watermelon Margaritas and Appletinis, all priced at £9.

A selection of cocktails will also be served in the shapes of 90s icons, from Will Smith or Britney Spears' heads or from a Nokia 3310, all priced at £13. The food menu stays true to Bunga's pizza roots but dials up the indulgence with fully loaded American-style creations.

Expect giant 20-inch pizzas perfect for sharing and a generous selection of dips, garlic twists, nachos, 'chicken in a basket' and other 90s bar snacks will also feature. Both the pizza menu, and a bar snacks menu, will be available all night at Bunga 90 to keep you fuelled up.

Experiences:

Karaoke remains absolutely central to the Bunga 90 experience. The venue features two private karaoke rooms and two open systems (in the video store and toilets).

But the star of the show is the central stage in the main bar, where brave guests can perform live in front of a 300-strong crowd.

With everything from Spice Girls to Aerosmith and Will Smith to one-hit wonders, the playlist is packed with nostalgia. The private karaoke rooms are available for up to 10 guests for 90-minute sessions, priced at £99.

Every Saturday, Bunga 90 will be holding a bottomless 90s brunch, with a live band providing a soundtrack of the decade.

Guests will receive bottomless cocktails or beer alongside a starter and a 20-inch pizza for every two people. Running weekly from 12pm until 4pm, the brunch will be priced at £45 per person.

On the launch of Bunga 90, Inception Group co-founder Charlie Gilkes told That's Food and Drink: “We are hugely excited to be launching Bunga 90. We opened the original Bunga Bunga back in 2011, and this is a complete reimagining of the brand, while still keeping the pizzas, karaoke, and sense of fun that people know and love. Bunga 90 is both a love letter to the 1990s and a bold new chapter.”

room to Redefining Cocktail Experiences

room two has established itself as London's premier cocktail events company, blending backgrounds in film, music, and interior design to reimagine what cocktails can be.

While the world of bars and cocktail culture continues to evolve, event drinks have often stayed in safer territory. room two is now changing that landscape.

Their mission is to blur the lines between bar, set, and experience, bringing cocktails back to the forefront of luxury events across the whole United Kingdom.

At its core, room two is about translating feelings into flavours. Whether it's a track that hits at 2am on a late-night dancefloor, the colour of a room at golden hour, or a film scene that lingers long after it ends, these moments are the starting point for every drink the team creates.

The company's distinctive approach integrates taste, texture, music, energy, and design, creating multi-sensory experiences that resonate deeply with guests.

The brand regularly releases short films to share its world, leaning into the surreal and the strange, "because that's where we think the best ideas tend to live."

"Having worked in luxury events for over 14 years, while also being a lifelong fan of late-night dancefloors, I saw a real opportunity to bring the intimacy, energy and togetherness found in those spaces into the world of luxury events," states Max McCormick, co-Founder of room two.

room two's methodology distinguishes them in the UK cocktail events industry. Recently, they were invited to Goa to design a series of drinks for a spirit not yet properly introduced to the UK market. room two was tasked with helping it break through, making it feel modern, drinkable, and relevant to a UK audience.

Their creative process is rooted in storytelling. Rather than leading with a spirit or ingredient, the team begins with a feeling, developing drink concepts around music, moodboards, moments and stories—establishing them as innovators in the British beverage experience sector.

room two has partnered with distinguished brands across fashion, beauty, and hospitality sectors. Their impressive client portfolio includes Prada, Huntsman, The American Embassy, Space NK, Singleton whisky, and Henry Holland Studio.

Actress Sienna Miller praised the company: "room two made the night truly special, every drink was like a little work of art." Huntsman (saville row) stated: "Quite possibly the best martini we've ever been served."

For a recent event with Space NK, room two created four bespoke cocktails inspired by the retailer's top-selling fragrances. The standout creation, "Rose Whip," featured a cherry and rose sour finished with a homemade leather-infused spray, designed to mirror the base notes of the featured perfume. The result was unusual, beautifully layered, and utterly delicious—showcasing their exceptional creativity in the UK cocktail scene.

room two regularly collaborates with acclaimed food stylist Kirthana on projects including a multi-sensory supper with Singleton whisky and Henry Holland Studio. These events blur the line between fashion, food, and drinks, designed for guests who crave experiences that feel unique from start to finish.

Music is a key ingredient in the room two process. Playlists are created to complement drinks. Soundtracks are built into supper clubs. Everything is mood-driven. The team's most immersive concept to date is "Dancing on the Bar," a pop-up that blends a high-fidelity listening lounge with a backgammon bar and cocktail menu. Guests sip room two drinks, eat bar snacks curated by guest chefs, and play games while listening to carefully selected records on an audiophile-grade sound system.

This season, room two is launching the first "Dancing on the Bar" pop-up in London. Think after-hours salon meets high-concept speakeasy. Part listening room, part cocktail lab, part intimate hangout. Designed for people who care about detail, from the drinks to the vinyl.

The team is currently inviting expressions of interest from aligned brands, venues, and collaborators interested in supporting or partnering on the launch.

Beyond pop-ups, room two runs a supper club series called "təˈɡeð.ər," with designer ‘Anissa Kermiche’ , a space where interesting people are brought together over food, drinks, and conversation, often in support of causes chosen by the host. Previous dinners have supported mental health initiatives, environmental causes, and LGBTQIA+ charities. Each one is co-curated, with every detail considered: from scent and lighting to the records playing in the background.

room two is committed to doing better for the planet, without shouting about it unnecessarily. Where possible, the team uses local and seasonal produce, often foraging ingredients. They work closely with East London distillers like 58 and Co, known for their thoughtful spirits, and have begun collaborating with catering teams to collect and reuse food waste, turning discarded fruit into garnishes, syrups, and shrubs.

It's not perfect, but it's part of a conscious and consistent effort to reduce waste and rethink what sustainable drinking could look like.

About room two: room two is a leading London-based cocktail events company specializing in creating immersive, multi-sensory drink experiences for luxury brands and high-profile events. Founded by industry veterans with backgrounds spanning film, music, and design, room two has established itself as a pioneer in innovative cocktail experiences throughout the United Kingdom.

The Most Popular Cocktails in the UK 2024: Insights from Google & Social Media Data

A new study by Wilde Toast reveals the UK's most talked-about cocktails of 2024, combining data from Google, SEMrush, and Exploding Topics, a tool that tracks trending topics across major social platforms.

The study provides a view of consumer preferences, highlighting both search trends and social media discussions.

Wilde Toast cross-referenced online search statistics with advanced marketing tools to calculate an average ranking of the UK's top 10 cocktails. Exploding Topics further analysed social media mentions, including detailed platform-specific insights across LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit.

“With this research, we wanted to see what the top cocktails of 2024 were and go a few levels deeper into the top cocktails among consumers online. Most reports on this only account for Google data so we used a best-in-class 3rd party tool to cross-reference the sometimes inaccurate Google search volume.

"We also looked to social search and mentions of cocktails, which consumers are increasingly turning to when discovering and talking about their favourite drinks," Tom Bronock, the Wilde Toast Marketing Director told That's Food and Drink.

Aperol Spritz Takes the Top Spot

According to the findings, the Aperol Spritz emerged as the most popular cocktail, dominating both search and social media conversations.

"Aperol has seen consistent growth in trade and third space, bolstered by its strong brand activations in retail. The data strongly reflects this ongoing popularity," says Tom Bronock.

“We also are seeing a phenomenal result for the Aperol Spritz across socials, with mentions across social platforms into 7 figures.”

Other cocktails making the top ten list include the Negroni, Espresso Martini, and Dirty Martini.

Trends Driving Cocktail Preferences

"One of the most fascinating insights is the influence of cultural trends on cocktail choices and how we can see UK cocktail culture evolving year on year. For example, the Dirty Martini has been quietly gaining popularity both in bars and in at-home drinking occasions, signalling an evolution in the UK's cocktail culture. Ten years ago, it wouldn't have come close to the top 10," Bronock added.

The data also highlights the significant role of social media in shaping cocktail preferences and underscores the seasonal nature of certain drinks. The Negroni and Espresso Martini showed notable spikes in popularity during the festive season, while the Aperol Spritz and Piña Colada peaked in summer and again during the festive period.

Surprising Social Media Insights

The study revealed unexpected trends in platform-specific conversations. For instance, LinkedIn and Reddit have emerged as surprising hubs for discussions about cocktails like the Negroni.

"This data is not only interesting for a casual observer but also invaluable for brands looking to launch cocktail-related products or campaigns. It provides clear insights into consumer engagement with different cocktails and seasonal trends, helping brands align their strategies with real-time consumer interests," Bronock concluded.

Crafting Cocktails at Home: A Guide to Mixology Mastery

Welcome to the world of home mixology! Creating craft cocktails at home is not only a delightful hobby but also a fantastic way to impress your friends and family.

Whether you’re a novice or have some experience, this guide will help you hone your skills and enjoy the art of cocktail making.

Here’s how you can get started on your journey to becoming a home bartender.

1. Start with the Basics

Before you dive into crafting complex cocktails, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the basics. Here are some foundational steps:

Essential Tools

Shaker: A Boston shaker or a Cobbler shaker will do. The Boston shaker consists of two tins, while the Cobbler shaker has three parts, including a built-in strainer.

Jigger: A measuring tool to ensure precise quantities. Most jiggers have two sides, typically 25ml and 50ml.

Bar Spoon: For stirring and layering drinks.

Strainer: A Hawthorne strainer for shaking and a fine-mesh strainer for double straining.

Muddler: For crushing ingredients like herbs and fruits.

Basic Ingredients

Spirits: Stock up on the essentials – gin, vodka, rum, tequila, and whisky.

Liqueurs: Triple sec, vermouth, and amaretto are versatile choices.

Mixers: Tonic water, soda water, and cola.

Fresh Ingredients: Lemons, limes, oranges, mint, and seasonal fruits.

2. Master Classic Cocktails

Starting with classic cocktails is a great way to learn the fundamentals. Here are a few recipes to get you started:

Gin and Tonic

Ingredients:

50ml gin

150ml tonic water

Ice cubes

Lime wedge

Method: Fill a highball glass with ice, pour over the gin, top with tonic water, and garnish with a lime wedge.

Whisky Sour

Ingredients:

50ml whisky

25ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

12.5ml sugar syrup

Ice cubes

Lemon twist

Method: Shake the whisky, lemon juice, and sugar syrup with ice in a shaker. Strain into a glass filled with ice and garnish with a lemon twist.

Mojito

Ingredients:

50ml white rum

1 lime (cut into wedges)

2 teaspoons sugar

Mint leaves

Soda water

Ice cubes

Method: Muddle the lime wedges and sugar in a glass. Add mint leaves and gently muddle again. Fill the glass with ice, pour over the rum, and top with soda water. Stir and garnish with a mint sprig.

3. Experiment with Flavours

Once you’re comfortable with the basics, start experimenting with different flavours and ingredients. Try infusing your spirits with herbs or spices, or making your own syrups.

Infused Spirits

Example: Infuse gin with cucumber and rosemary for a refreshing twist. Simply add sliced cucumber and a sprig of rosemary to a bottle of gin and let it sit for a few days.

Homemade Syrups

Example: Create a simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat. For added flavour, infuse with lavender, ginger, or berries.

4. Perfect Your Presentation

Celebrating National Creativity Day: Culinary Adventures and Inventive Cocktails

National Creativity Day (Thursday 30th May) is a perfect occasion to unleash your imagination in the kitchen and behind the bar.

Whether you’re an experienced chef or a home cook, the possibilities for culinary and cocktail creativity are endless.

This year, let's celebrate by cooking special dishes and inventing unique, new cocktails and mocktails that will tantalise your taste buds and impress your guests.

Whipping Up Creative Dishes

1. Fusion Cuisine: A Taste of Two Worlds

Why not start with fusion cuisine? Combine elements from different culinary traditions to create something entirely new and exciting. For instance, try a Japanese-Italian fusion by making Sushi Pizza. Use a crispy rice base, top it with thinly sliced avocado, sashimi, and drizzle with wasabi mayonnaise. It’s an unexpected blend that’s sure to delight.

2. Edible Art: Themed Platters

Create an edible masterpiece by arranging a themed platter. A Mediterranean platter with a modern twist could include beetroot hummus, roasted pepper tapenade, tzatziki, and artisan bread crisps. Decorate with edible flowers and fresh herbs for a visually stunning presentation. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, but the variety of flavours will keep everyone coming back for more.

3. Dessert Reinvented: Deconstructed Classics

Take a classic dessert and deconstruct it. How about a Deconstructed Tiramisu? Layer mascarpone mousse, coffee-soaked ladyfingers, and chocolate shavings in individual glasses. Add a twist by incorporating flavoured liqueurs, such as hazelnut or amaretto, to elevate the traditional taste.

Crafting Unique Cocktails and Mocktails

1. Garden-Inspired Cocktails: Fresh and Fragrant

Use fresh herbs and botanicals to create garden-inspired cocktails. A Basil-Ginger Gin Fizz combines the peppery freshness of basil with the spicy warmth of ginger. Muddle fresh basil leaves with a touch of sugar, add gin and ginger beer, then top with soda water. Garnish with a basil sprig for a fragrant and refreshing drink.

2. Colourful Mocktails: Vibrant and Inviting

Mocktails can be just as exciting as their alcoholic counterparts. For a vibrant mocktail, try a Blueberry Mint Spritzer. Blend fresh blueberries with mint leaves and a bit of honey. Strain into a glass filled with ice and top with sparkling water. Garnish with whole blueberries and a mint sprig for a refreshing, alcohol-free beverage.

3. Unexpected Flavours: Experimental Mixology

Challenge your palate with cocktails that feature unexpected flavour combinations. A Chilli Mango Margarita marries the sweetness of ripe mango with the heat of fresh chilli. Blend mango puree with lime juice, tequila, and a dash of chilli powder. Serve in a salt-rimmed glass and garnish with a slice of chilli for an adventurous drink.

Tips for Creative Cooking and Mixing

Experiment with Ingredients: Don’t be afraid to use unusual ingredients or pairings. The best creations often come from the most unexpected combinations.

Presentation Matters: How you present your dish or drink can elevate the experience. Use garnishes, colourful ingredients, and elegant glassware to make your creations stand out.

Get Inspired: Look for inspiration in different cuisines, seasonal produce, and even art or nature. Let your surroundings spark your creativity.

Involve Your Guests: Turn the celebration into a collaborative experience. Have your friends or family suggest ingredients or help with the preparation.

National Creativity Day is a wonderful opportunity to push the boundaries of your culinary and mixology skills. By experimenting with new dishes and drinks, you can create memorable experiences and delight your senses. So, don your chef’s hat and bartender’s apron, and let your creativity flow in the kitchen and at the bar. Cheers to innovation and delicious discoveries!

Crafting Delight: Homemade Fruit Cordials on a Budget

In the realm of homemade beverages, few things rival the refreshing allure of fruit cordials. Bursting with natural flavours and versatile in their applications, these delightful concoctions elevate any occasion.

What's even better? They're incredibly easy and affordable to make at home! Let's dive into the art of crafting simple and cheap homemade fruit cordials, just in time for the summer months.

The Essence of Fruit Cordials:

Fruit cordials are essentially concentrated fruit syrups that can be mixed with water, sparkling water, or even added to cocktails for a burst of fruity goodness. Their versatility allows for endless experimentation with flavours, making them a firm favourite among home bartenders and beverage enthusiasts alike.

Choosing Your Fruit:

The beauty of fruit cordials lies in their adaptability to various fruits. Whether you have a surplus of ripe berries, citrus fruits, or even exotic finds, there's a cordial recipe waiting to be explored. Consider seasonal fruits for optimal flavor and cost-effectiveness. Berries, lemons, limes, oranges, and even tropical fruits like pineapple and mango are excellent choices.

Simple Recipes for Homemade Fruit Cordials:

Berry Bliss:

Ingredients: Mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries), sugar, water

Method: Simmer berries with water and sugar until soft. Strain the mixture, pressing gently to extract all the juice. Return the liquid to the heat and simmer until slightly thickened. Cool and bottle.

Citrus Splash:

Ingredients: Lemons, sugar, water

Method: Zest and juice lemons. Combine juice, zest, sugar, and water in a saucepan. Heat until sugar dissolves, then simmer for a few minutes. Strain and cool before bottling.

Tropical Tango:

Ingredients: Pineapple, mango, sugar, water

Method: Blend pineapple and mango until smooth. Strain the puree to remove fibers. Heat the juice with sugar and water until the sugar dissolves. Simmer until slightly thickened, then cool and bottle.

Tips for Cost-Effective Cordial Crafting:

Utilise ripe or slightly overripe fruits, or so-called wonky fruits that are imperfect, which may be available at discounted prices.

Buy in bulk when fruits are in season and freeze them for later use.

Consider using fruit scraps like citrus peels for extra flavoru and minimal waste.

Experiment with different fruit combinations to create unique flavours without breaking the bank.

Storage and Serving Suggestions:

Once your fruit cordials are ready, store them in clean, airtight bottles or jars in the refrigerator. They can typically last for several weeks when refrigerated properly. To serve, dilute the cordial with still or sparkling water to taste, or get creative and use them in cocktails, mocktails, or even drizzled over desserts for a burst of fruity sweetness.

Homemade fruit cordials offer a delightful way to capture the essence of seasonal fruits while keeping costs low. With just a few simple ingredients and a bit of creativity, you can craft an array of delicious cordials to enjoy year-round. So why not embark on a flavorful journey and start concocting your own fruit cordials today? Have fun!

Mixtons: The Next Generation of Ready-to-Drink Cocktails Is Here for Summer 24

Cocktail lover? But feeling bored with the same tired recipes that all canned cocktails seem to have now?

Then you Cocktail lovers are in for a veritable treat as some of the recipes we are familiar with have just received the Mixtons makeover.

Wherever you are, at home, at a festival, staging a garden party, dining al fresco, enjoying a  picnic, travelling by train, these canny creations will give your summer gatherings a tasty twist.

What, exactly, is a Mixtons makeover? It's taking a classical cocktail flavour and upping its game by  adding unique and original twists to them, creating an original spin on iconic cocktails without any of the faff of making them yourself. It reallly is now just a case of you grabbing and going.

Mixtons want to bring back the excitement you have when you find a new cocktail recipe on a bar menu in an exciting bar. But all within a can to enjoy wherever and whenever you want.

After they made the genuinely surprising discovery that all canned cocktails only had a miserly six  flavours available, founders Xav, Ranj and Sim started to come up with new and inspired recipes during lockdown as they socialised on zoom.

They and their friends loved them and within their first 12 months, they'd sold a pretty impressive 200k cocktails, all created and delivered by hand, made by themselves in Sim's kitchen. But now? Now they have grown and coime on by leaps and bounds, with two upcoming major retail listings, being stocked at the O2 and being the exclusive cocktail partners to over 30+ festivals throughout the coming year.

From surfing waves (Xav and Ranj are both from Cornwall) to making waves in the canned cocktail industry, the Mixtons taste-obsessed trio now have a range of four unique and 'classic cocktails with a twist.' This is not the brand that will be pushing fancy martini glasses or elaborate garnishes, the Founders and their customers, just adore the outdoors, festivals, music, getting together with friends al fresco.

Guilty Passion is a succulent tropical twist on a Passion Fruit Martini. Vodka, Passionfruit, Mango and Lychee. No need to shake or strain. It's a Martini that's ready to go.

Dragon Mojo is an exotic fruit twist on a classic Mojito with Rum, Mint, Kiwi and Dragonfruit. No need for muddling or hunting down ingredients. They've concocted the Mojito of dreams.

Spicy Melons was originally a bit of a mistake. Ranj inadvertently mixed two recipes together and this was the result - and their friends LOVED it. Tequila, Lime, Watermelon and Chilli - time to spice things up a bit? Definitely!

Forbidden Zest is the Mixtons take on a classic Aperitif - a perfect alternative when Spritz Season hits. Gin, Blood Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Yuzu.

All Mixtons cocktails are 8% ABV, Gluten-free and in fully recyclable cans. Available from www.mixtons.com. Priced from £22.50 for 6.

Says Co-Founder Xav Craine: “We wanted to capture that feeling that you have when you see an incredible drink on a cocktail list with ingredients you've never tried before. Now you can have that in a can. We bring cocktail lovers unique and innovative flavour combinations, without any of the hassle of making the cocktails yourself. We're bringing back the joy of cocktail discovery. In fact, you could say The story of canned cocktails just got a plot twist!”

Elevate Your Home Bar: Craft Cocktails and Mixology for Amateurs

In recent years, the art of mixology has taken the world by storm, with craft cocktails becoming more than just a trend, they're a lifestyle.

Whether you're entertaining guests or simply looking to unwind after a long day, elevating your home bar with the principles of mixology can transform your drinking experience.

Here, we'll be exploring the exciting world of craft cocktails and offer tips and tricks for amateurs looking to master the art of mixology from the comfort of their homes.

Stocking Your Home Bar: Quality over Quantity

The foundation of any great home bar lies in its ingredients. Begin by investing in high-quality spirits such as premium vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey. Additionally, having a selection of liqueurs, bitters, and vermouth will provide you with the building blocks for a variety of cocktails. Don't forget fresh fruits, herbs, and garnishes to add that extra flair to your creations. Some people use beers in their cocktails. Be adventurous!

Essential Tools for Mixology Mastery

To craft impeccable cocktails, you'll need the right tools. Start with the basics: a shaker, mixing glass, muddler, strainer, and jigger. A good set of bar spoons and a citrus press can also come in handy. These tools will not only make your mixing process more efficient but will also give you the confidence to experiment with different recipes.

Understanding Flavor Profiles: The Key to Perfect Cocktails

One of the fundamental principles of mixology is understanding flavor profiles. Experiment with sweet, sour, bitter, and savory elements to create a balanced and satisfying drink. For instance, combining citrusy notes with a hint of sweetness can result in a refreshing concoction, while adding bitters can elevate the complexity of your cocktail. Don't be afraid to experiment and trust your palate.

Mastering the Classics: Timeless Recipes for Every Occasion

Start your mixology journey by mastering a few classic cocktail recipes. From the iconic Martini and Old Fashioned to the refreshing Mojito and Margarita, understanding the foundations of these timeless drinks will provide a solid base for your creative endeavors. Once you've mastered the classics, you can begin to experiment with variations and create your signature twists.

Embracing Creativity: Craft Your Own Signature Cocktails

Once you've gained confidence in mixing classic cocktails, it's time to let your creativity shine. Experiment with unique flavor combinations, infusions, and homemade syrups to craft your own signature drinks. Consider the season, your mood, or the occasion when creating new recipes. The possibilities are endless, and your home bar is the perfect canvas for your mixological artistry.

And don't forget that alcohol free mocktails can be fun, too!

Presentation Matters: Garnishes and Glassware

Elevate the visual appeal of your cocktails by paying attention to presentation. Invest in a variety of glassware to suit different drinks, and don't underestimate the impact of a well-chosen garnish. Whether it's a citrus twist, fresh herbs, or edible flowers, the right garnish can enhance both the aroma and aesthetic of your creation.

Elevating your home bar through the art of mixology is not just about crafting drinks; it's about creating experiences. By stocking quality ingredients, mastering essential techniques, and embracing your creativity, you can turn your home into a haven for craft cocktails.

So, gather your tools, explore new recipes, and let the world of mixology become your playground. Cheers to the journey of becoming a home bar aficionado!

Just think! If you start learning and practicing now you could well be an expert mixologist in time for Chrastmas!
