Originating from Poland, Chopin Vodkas have earned a stellar reputation among connoisseurs worldwide. But what sets Chopin apart, making it amongst the best in the world? Let's delve into the craftsmanship and tradition that define Chopin Polish Vodkas.

Crafting Your Own Gins at Home Using Vodka as a Base

By coincidence when we at That's Food and Drink received  the news about James May's newly released gins, my wife and I were experimenting with a DIY gin making kit.

So, we decided to run a feature on making gin at home and the result is: Crafting Your Own Gins at Home Using Vodka as a Base.

In recent years, the art of craft distilling has surged in popularity, with enthusiasts exploring unique flavors and botanical combinations in their homemade spirits.

One such endeavor is the creation of homemade gins, a process that allows for endless experimentation and customisation. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a traditional pot still or elaborate equipment to embark on this journey. With a bottle of vodka as your starting point and a selection of botanicals, you can craft your own delicious gin right in your own kitchen. So let's get into the fascinating world of DIY gin-making.

Choosing Your Base:

Vodka serves as the perfect base for crafting homemade gin due to its neutral flavour profile. It provides a clean canvas upon which you can layer your chosen botanicals, allowing their intricate flavours to shine through.

Opt for a high-quality, unflavoured vodka to ensure the best results. While some purists may insist on using a traditional grain-based vodka, others find success with alternatives such as potato or grape-based vodkas. Ultimately, the choice is yours, so feel free to experiment with different options to discover your preferred base.

Selecting Botanicals:

The magic of gin lies in its botanical blend, typically dominated by juniper berries but complemented by a diverse array of herbs, spices, fruits, and flowers. When selecting botanicals for your homemade gin, let your creativity guide you. Juniper berries are a must-have, providing the classic piney flavour that defines gin.

Beyond juniper, consider adding botanicals such as coriander seeds, citrus peels, cardamom pods, lavender, or even unconventional choices like rose petals, fresh ginger root or lemongrass. The possibilities are endless, so don't hesitate to experiment with different combinations until you find the perfect blend that suits your taste preferences.

The Infusion Process:

Infusing vodka with botanicals is where the magic truly happens. To begin, gather your chosen botanicals and add them to a clean, airtight container. There's no strict recipe to follow here, feel free to adjust the quantities based on your personal preferences and desired flavour profile.

Once your botanical blend is assembled, pour your vodka over the botanicals, ensuring that they are fully submerged. Seal the container tightly and place it in a cool, dark place to infuse. The duration of the infusion process can vary depending on the potency of your chosen botanicals and your desired flavour intensity. As a general guideline, aim for anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks, tasting periodically until you achieve the desired flavour profile.

Straining and Bottling:

Once the infusion period is complete, it's time to strain your homemade gin to remove the spent botanicals and sediment. Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth or a coffee filter and carefully pour the infused vodka through the strainer into a clean container.

Press gently on the botanicals to extract any remaining liquid, then discard the spent ingredients in your composter

Your homemade gin is now ready to be bottled and enjoyed. Transfer the strained gin into glass bottles or jars, ensuring that they are clean and airtight to preserve the freshness of your creation. Don't forget to label your bottles with the date of creation and the botanicals used, it's always satisfying to look back on your flavour experiments.

Crafting your own gin at home using vodka as a base is a rewarding and creative endeavor that allows you to tailor your spirits to your exact specifications. Whether you prefer a classic London dry style or a more adventurous botanical blend, the possibilities for experimentation are endless.

With a bit of patience and a willingness to explore different flavours, you can create unique and delicious gins that rival those found on supermarket shelves or in your pub.

So gather your botanicals, pour yourself a glass of creativity, and embark on the journey of homemade gin-making. Cheers to the art of craft distilling!

Also, we'll let you know how our first batch of gin goes. Wish us luck!

Time to Party 'Til the Cows Come Home! 11 Central Teams Up With Black Cow Milk Vodka

Hotly anticipated experience venue 11 Central announced today it will be teaming up with artisanal vodka producer Black Cow.

The West Dorset-based vodka will be hosting the 'Black Cow Terrace' part of the new bar's 2,000 square foot outdoor space. Guests will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious Espresso Martini, whilst marvelling at the incredible views of the city.

Made from the milk of grass-grazed cows, Co-founders Paul Archard (Archie) and Jason Barber are excited to bring their unique drinks brand to Central Bay, Salford Quays. Punters can expect to see Black Cow in several cocktails including the 11 Central's signature "Strawberry Moo-secco”.

Founded in 2011, Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka is crafted by separating milk into curds and whey. The curds make cheese and instead of the whey going to waste, the distillery apply a secret recipe to turn it into vodka. The use of milk as a single source ingredient is what makes Black Cow so exceptionally smooth.

Jason Barber is a dairy farmer based just up the road from the Black Cow distillery in West Dorset. His family farm – that he continues to run – has been in his family for five generations. The vodka distillery also operates 'Black Cow Saloon' in Lyme Regis, a new Vodka Espresso Bar designed to showcase the brand's signature serves.

Speaking about the partnership, Co-founder Archie said: “We're thrilled to announce our collaboration with Seven Brothers at 11 Central, right in the heart of Manchester's dynamic MediaCity.

“Our shared passion for Zero Waste and sustainable practices makes this partnership particularly exciting. We're eager to play our part in the city's ongoing development and can't wait to try the 11 Central team's Black Cow cocktail creations.”

11 Central will open its doors with a press and media launch on Thursday 16th November before fully opening its doors to the public from Friday 17th November 2023.

The launch weekend (Friday 17th November and Saturday 18th November) will offer a chance to experience the unique drinks menu and taste the new food offering.

The launch weekend will also promise entertainment with dancers, live music, magic, DJs and lots more across the Saturday and Sunday, as the new exciting venue will deliver on its promise of 'expect the unexpected'.

CEO of SEVEN BRO7HERS BREWING CO and part of the team heading up 11 Central, said: “Working with the team from Black Cow has been a pleasure and we are excited to see the Black Cow Terrace come to life and be open to the public. Black Cow is a unique take on this classic spirit. It is very exciting to come together, as they really echo what we are trying to achieve with 11 Central – expect the unexpected.”

He added: “With this new venue we're combining a mainstream beer offering alongside craftsmanship from our brewery, gin distilleries and vodka distillery partners. We will offer twists on classic drinks, which will hopefully be something that visitors come back to us for time and time again.

“The food offering is also a new adventure for us, it will be unlike any of our other venues. It has been exciting to challenge the team to craft a completely new experience. We can't wait to see all the hard work come together as we open this week.”

Marquis Vodka. Stylish and sophisticated

Marquis Vodka is stylish and it is sophisticated. It comes in a rather special bottle. No descriptions would do it justice, save to say that it consists of some rather special colours and a mirrored effect.

The bottle bears the inscription: "Nulli Secundus" which is, as I expected, is Latin for second to none.

Having tasted this rather special Polish Private Label Vodka, all I can say with confidence is that Second to None is probably a pretty accurate description for Marquis Vodka.

It's 80 Proof, 40% alcohol and is a 100% neutral spirits vodka. The bottle points out that it is made from "exceptional rye grain" and fully born out by the taste of this vodka which, it has to be said, is also pretty exceptional.

The taste is redolent of Polish nobility, of princes, princesses, kings and queens, of palace parties and of dashing Polish Cavalry Officers.

It is wickedly smooth, with a clean, crisp taste that is deceptively easy to drink. It's perfect by itself, although it works very well with Cola (your author's favourite is Royal Crown Cola) or as a very useful ingredient in many cocktails which will make it a firm favourite this Christmas and New Year.

It is available at discerning outlets nationwide and also at www.thedrinkshop.com at a price of £28.99. But the clever advice is to get at least two bottle in, perhaps more. Or you will risk running out very, very quickly, indeed!

Here is a cocktail that you can try:
Marquis vodka
50ml passion fruit puree
10ml vanilla syrup
10ml kaffir-infused simple sugar syrup
15ml egg white

Shake all ingredients in a Boston shaker, double strain into chilled champagne coupé and garnish with a floating slice of passion fruit.
