The Best Wines to Drink During Summer: A Refreshing Guide

As the sun graces us with longer days and warmer temperatures, there's nothing quite like a refreshing glass of wine to enhance those balmy summer evenings.

Whether you're planning a garden party, a picnic in the park, or a quiet evening on the patio, the right wine can elevate your experience.

Here's a guide to some of the best wines to enjoy during the summer months.

1. Crisp Whites: Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is a quintessential summer wine. Known for its bright acidity and refreshing crispness, it's perfect for those hot days when you need something to cool you down. Look for notes of citrus, green apple, and tropical fruits. New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs are particularly renowned for their vibrant flavours and aromatic profiles, making them a fantastic choice for summer sipping.

Pairing Suggestions: Grilled fish, goat cheese salads, and light appetisers.

2. Elegant Rosés: Provence Rosé

No summer wine list would be complete without a nod to rosé. Provence rosé, with its pale pink hue and delicate flavour, is the epitome of summer elegance. These wines typically offer a delightful balance of fresh red fruit, citrus, and floral notes. They're light, versatile, and perfect for almost any occasion.

Pairing Suggestions: Mediterranean dishes, seafood, and fresh salads.

3. Zesty Whites: Albariño

Albariño, a gem from Spain's Rías Baixas region, is a superb summer wine. It’s known for its high acidity, zesty citrus flavours, and subtle hints of stone fruits and minerals. Albariño's crisp and clean profile makes it incredibly refreshing, particularly on a hot day.

Pairing Suggestions: Shellfish, sushi, and light tapas.

4. Refreshing Reds: Beaujolais

While red wines are often associated with cooler weather, certain reds are perfect for summer. Beaujolais, particularly Beaujolais Nouveau, is light, fruity, and best served slightly chilled. This wine, made from the Gamay grape, is known for its vibrant red fruit flavours and low tannins, making it a refreshing choice for summer.

Pairing Suggestions: Charcuterie, grilled vegetables, and barbecued chicken.

5. Sparkling Wines: Prosecco

Sparkling wines are a fantastic way to add a touch of celebration to your summer gatherings. Prosecco, with its light body, fruity flavours, and fine bubbles, is an excellent choice. It’s generally more affordable than Champagne but still provides that sense of festivity. Serve it chilled to enjoy its crisp, refreshing qualities.

Pairing Suggestions: Fresh fruit, light appetisers, and summer desserts.

6. Aromatic Whites: Riesling

Riesling is another versatile wine that shines in the summer. Its balance of sweetness and acidity, along with its aromatic profile, makes it incredibly refreshing. Look for dry or off-dry versions for the best summer experience, with flavours ranging from green apple and citrus to peach and apricot.

Pairing Suggestions: Spicy Asian dishes, pork, and summer fruits.

Tips for Serving Wine in Summer

Chill Wisely: While it’s common to serve white and rosé wines chilled, consider lightly chilling some red wines like Beaujolais or Pinot Noir for a refreshing twist.

Proper Glassware: Use glasses designed to enhance the wine's aromas and flavours. For example, a wider bowl for reds and a narrower one for whites.

Keep it Cool: If you're hosting an outdoor event, keep a bucket of ice water nearby to maintain the optimal serving temperature of your wines.

Conclusion

Choosing the right wine for summer is all about finding those light, refreshing, and vibrant flavours that complement the season's activities and cuisine. Whether you prefer a crisp white, an elegant rosé, or even a chilled red, there's a perfect summer wine out there waiting for you. So, pour yourself a glass, sit back, and enjoy the warmth of the season with your favourite summer sips. Cheers!

Savouring Love on a Budget: A Guide to Affordable Valentine's Day Dining

Valentine's Day, the day of love, is just around the corner.

While many associate this romantic occasion with lavish dinners and extravagant gestures, it's entirely possible to celebrate without breaking the bank.

This year, why not focus on the essence of togetherness and affection, rather than the price tag? In this guide, we'll explore creative ways to enjoy a delightful Valentine's Day eating and drinking experience on a budget.

Home-Cooked Delights:

There's nothing more intimate than preparing a meal together. Opting for a cozy night in allows you to control costs and create a unique dining experience. Select a simple yet delicious recipe that you both enjoy, and embark on a culinary adventure together. Not only does this save you money, it also adds a personal touch to your celebration.

Budget-Friendly Ingredients:

When planning your home-cooked meal, choose budget-friendly ingredients without compromising on flavour. Consider shopping for seasonal produce, which isn't only cost-effective but also fresher and more flavourful, too. Look for sales and discounts at your local shops and supermarkets to make the most of your budget.

DIY Decor and Ambiance:

Transform your home into a romantic haven without splurging on expensive decorations. Create a cozy ambiance with soft lighting, candles, (LED candles are safer) and maybe even a homemade playlist of your favorite love songs? Handwritten notes or small, thoughtful gestures can go a long way in making the evening special.

Wine on a Budget:

A romantic dinner isn't complete without a good bottle of wine. Instead of opting for high-end labels, explore more affordable options that still offer excellent quality. Many supermarkets carry hidden gems at reasonable prices. Check out Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Aldi, Lidl and Booths for some modestly priced but excellent wine. Own brand Propseco can be low in price but high in taste.

Alternatively, consider a homemade cocktail or mocktail to add a personal touch to your beverage selection.

Explore Budget-Friendly Dining Options:

If the idea of cooking at home isn't appealing, explore budget-friendly dining options in your area. Many restaurants offer special Valentine's Day menus or discounts on this occasion. Look for local deals, set menus, or prix-fixe options that won't burn a hole in your pocket. Wetherspoon and Hungry Horse are two good examples.

Daytime Adventures:

Consider celebrating Valentine's Day during the daytime to take advantage of lunch specials and matinee prices. A brunch date or picnic in the park can be just as romantic as a dinner date, and it often comes with a more budget-friendly price tag.

Gifts from the Heart:

Shift the focus from expensive gifts to thoughtful gestures. Create a handmade card, write a heartfelt letter, or put together a scrapbook of your favorite memories together. These gestures are not only more meaningful but are also budget-friendly.

This Valentine's Day, embrace the joy of love without the burden of overspending. Whether you choose to cook together, dine out on a budget, or opt for daytime adventures, remember that it's the thought and effort that truly make the day special.

By being creative and mindful of your budget, you can create lasting memories without sacrificing the romance. Cheers to a love-filled and budget-friendly Valentine's Day!

Celebrate National Prosecco Day with a Witt pizza

Why not raise a glass to National Prosecco Day this Sunday 13th August with the perfect pairing, delicious authentic Italian homemade pizza and bubbly Prosecco?

Pop open a bottle of fizz, gather your friends and family members, and host a Prosecco filled pizza party with the help of Witt pizza curators of the impressive pizza oven range which is taking the UK by storm this throughout this summer.

Says Geoff Johnson Witt Sales Director, and Pizza Guru at Witt UK & Ireland: “The crisp, aromatic flavours of Prosecco makes it a suburb partner with even the more traditional types of pizzas.

The sparkling fruit nuances and light balance of Prosecco really create a wonderful contrast to the denser tones of cheese and sliced meats, and its clean, refreshing punch partners especially well with seafood toppings such as prawns and shellfish.”
