Putting the 'treat' into Treatment: Innovative New Fortified Ice Cream Range is Set to Improve Recovery for Patients

My Doctor's Recipe® has launched an exciting new product. It's a brand new range of special ice creams fortified with protein and enriched with specially formulated DJK8®; which is a unique blend of minerals and vitamins, specially formulated and designed by Consultant Oncologist Dr Jon Krell, Chef and ice cream Manufacturer Sally Newall, TV Chef Alan Rosenthal and Business Owner Alan Mackenzie, whose personal story inspired the business.

Inspired by Love: Alan Mackenzie's deeply personal quest to transform patient nutrition

My Doctor's Recipe® is much more than just a business venture; it's a deeply personal journey inspired by Alison, the late wife of co-founder Alan. Alison's courageous battle with cancer, illuminated the critical importance of accessible and palatable nutrition during challenging and difficult times.

Alison's struggle with the conventional nutritional supplements available is a poignant reminder of the harsh realities all too often faced by countless individuals in similar circumstances.

Witnessing Alison's journey firsthand, as she tried to take the ghastly, unpleasant drinks and the difficulty in consumption, compelled Alan to take action to honour Alison's struggles and her memory. Along with his co-founders Dr Jon Krell (who was Alison's consulting doctor) and Chef Alan Rosenthal.

Alan recounts: “The grim reality of choking down unpleasant tasting nutritional drinks is a burden that not only adversely impacts physical health but also takes a toll on the patient's emotional well-being, too. as well.

"Alison would say to her doctor 'Jon is there nothing else? I try really hard to take these drinks but can't stomach it?' 'Sorry, Alison' was Jon's reply ' we just don't have any alternatives. It's the same for most of my patients, they just can't take these drinks'."

It was during the endless hours when Alan Mackenzie sat patiently at his wife Alison's bedside that he became determined to help improve things for other patients and families, and the idea for My Doctor's Recipe® was born.

Introducing Nutri-Ice Cream®

Designed and approved by doctors, My Doctor's Recipe® Nutri-Ice Cream® comprises a range of high calorie absolutely delicious ice creams that are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, designed to enhance the recovery journey for patients.

The entire range of Cappuccino, Banana, Vanilla and Chocolate flavours (with Strawberry coming soon) have been made with taste in mind despite being low in sugar and high in protein. For those who need added fibre to support their gastrointestinal function there's also a Plus Fibre range in the same flavours.

Unlocking The Power of Nutrition: My Doctor's Recipe introduces DJK8®

Developed in House by Dr Jon Krell, My Doctor's Recipe® proudly unveils DJK8®, the exclusive and absolutely revolutionary formulation of encapsulated minerals and vitamins.

Dr Krell says “At My Doctor's Recipe®, we believe true innovation lies in unlocking the power of nutrition. With DJK8® we have achieved exactly that. It's an unfortunate fact that traditional supplements often fall short in delivering nutrients in an effective way and many are lost in digestion.

"DJK8® changes the game by encapsulating these vital nutrients, preserving their integrity and potency until they reach their destination in the body. Every tub of Nutri-ice cream includes DJK8 ® and because they are meticulously locked in, they don't impact on or alter the delicious flavour of our ice cream.”

Designed in collaboration with a world class nutritional lab and with the stamp of approval from medical professionals, My Doctor's Recipe® is poised to become a genuine game-changer in patient care.

Transforming patients' lives

Unfortunately many patients find it a struggle to cope with traditional nutritional drinks, finding it hard to finish them due to the synthetic taste and their format.

Chef Rosenthal says: “During my research I learned that it was abundantly clear when I was speaking to healthcare professionals that they all faced poor ingestion rates with the currently available drinks, and that the lack of palatable options, was not only an inconvenience but also a significant barrier to proper nutrition and recovery in patients.”

Co-Founder Dr. Jon Krell, who works with cancer patients battling with nutritional support added: “Good nutritional intake is absolutely vital for patients who are undergoing treatment but eating three meals a day can be a real challenge for some patients, with certain treatments causing food aversions. The modern science of food should match the science of medicine working symbiotically alongside each other."

Testing within hospital settings has proven the need for this innovative product, with patients receiving treatment reporting much needed beneficial weight gain, improved nutritional intake and a greater enjoyment of food at a time in life when they have found eating to be very challenging indeed.

During trials across London hospitals, Nutri-Ice Cream® really captured the hearts of patients and healthcare professionals alike, earning some heartfelt, rave reviews.

One patient summed it all up by saying: "At last medicine that's a treat!" This groundbreaking product line is genuinely set to revolutionise patient nutrition.

Delivering on taste

The My Doctor's Recipe® team was fully aware that taste would be paramount and key to ensuring patient compliance and consuming the product.

Chef Alan Rosenthal pointed out: “Everybody, especially patients, should have access to an enriched, healthy and delicious snack when they need it.

2Being a patient shouldn't mean that you can't enjoy tasty foods. We're really pleased and absolutely thrilled to see the impact Nutri-Ice Cream® is having on patient nutrition and satisfaction. This is just the beginning of our journey to revolutionise hospital nutrition, and we're excited to be looking forward to developing many more delicious products, to continue making a difference in the lives of patients across the country.”

Each product is meticulously crafted with encapsulated vitamins and minerals, boasting high protein and calorie content to support patients in their recovery journey.

Sally Newall, a partner in the business and the manufacturer of Nutri-Ice Cream® through her business Simply Ice Cream says: “It's been a really great honour to work on developing this range of ice creams over the last year.  Everything we make at Simply Ice Cream is hand made in small batches using the finest of ingredients. We don't allow any artificial colours and preservatives, our ethos has always been to produce great tasting, natural foods and we will obviously apply the same care and dedication to My Doctors Recipe®.”

The range has undergone rigorous testing and trials to ensure nutrition never compromises taste and vice versa.

You'll go Bananas for Pukpip frozen bananas in chocolate

Challenger brand Pukpip has announced its Real Frozen Bananas Dipped in Chocolate are now stocked in Whole Foods Market, just in time for ice cream season.

Pukpip is challenging the traditional ice cream category by tapping into the rise of permissible yet indulgent frozen fruit snacks. Breaking the mould for frozen treats, Pukpip's frozen bananas are a real fruit alternative to traditional ice cream.

“We believe that Whole Foods Market is the perfect fit for Pukpip, as we strive to help people eat more fruit in ways that are fun, delicious and convenient, providing indulgent fruit snacks that don't compromise on taste,” explains Zara Godfrey, who is the MD at Pukpip.

The London retailer which specialises in responsibly sourced, high-quality foods has added Pukpip's first two products, Milk and Dark Chocolate Dipped Bananas to the frozen section in all seven of it stores.

To celebrate the launch into Whole Foods Market, Pukpip has invested in an eye-catching window display in the Flagship Kensington High Street store, plus OOH media in July around prime London locations to drive awareness of the product listing.

Zara went on to say: “Nine out of ten of us are looking to add more fruit into our diet, and we want to make it easy, fun, and delicious. The creaminess of a frozen banana combined with the tasty, smooth satisfying chocolate makes for an irresistible treat that consumers will be keen to get their hands on this summer. Real fruit, that's indulgent so consumers can feel good about treating themselves!”

Obviously, Pukpip's bananas are responsibly sourced and freshly frozen at source in the coastal region of Ecuador. Using bananas rejected from export due to minor blemishes on their skin, because they're the wrong shape or size, or simply because there are too many on a bunch; Pukpip rescues these wonky bananas that would otherwise be wasted, helping them find their true calling as tasty, chocolate-covered treats. The banana peels are recycled back into the ecosystem.

Pukpip Real Frozen Bananas are only 152-161 calories each, contain no artificial and are ideally positioned as a snack, treat or dessert. The Milk Chocolate Dipped Bananas have picked up a 2022 Great Taste Award and the Dark Chocolate Dipped Bananas are Vegan Certified. Pukpip's frozen bananas are available to retail in milk chocolate and dark chocolate, in multipacks of 3 at an RRP of £3.99

UK's Only Coconut Milk Ice-Cream Bessant & Drury Gains Momentum

The UK's only coconut milk ice-cream Bessant & Drury aims high for 2012.

Following a successful launch in 2011, Bessant & Drury's Fine Ice-Cream Company is gaining impetus in the market, with more than 80 listings in the UK, committing also to a number of trade and consumer shows. Recent listings include WholeFoods in London and Glasgow, Planet Organic, As Nature Intended, Partridge's in London and the renown Sunny Foods in Brighton.

With the taste, texture and appearance of a premium ice-cream the product is proving popular amongst both dairy and dairy-free audiences, keen not to compromise on taste.

Since its launch in June 2011 the product, which comes in four flavours (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and lemon) has been taken on by retailers in London, the South East, South West, East Anglia, Yorkshire, Humberside, Wales and Scotland. An extensive sampling programme is significantly supporting sales whilst a broad exhibition calendar for 2012 includes presence at Hotelympia, Vitality, BBC Good Food Show, Speciality Fine Food Fair, Lunch! and more.

Targeting both the premium market and the increasing demands for dairy free products, it is the only coconut milk based ice-cream in the UK, enjoying all of the health benefits of the super-food coconut, with no additives, colourings or preservatives and using real fruit. Different from other dairy free desserts, Bessant & Drury enjoys a creaminess only associated with traditional ice-cream.

Poised to announce a nationwide retailer, 2012 will also see an extension of the four flavours.

The brand was developed just 18 months ago when Steve Bessant starting experimenting in his kitchen at home with a borrowed ice-cream maker, because as one of Britain's leading health experts Steve is regularly advising clients who have food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities.

With the number of people affected with dairy intolerances on the rise, Steve advises on healthy foods to consume, of which coconut plays a major part. Along with friend Ian he started to experiment with recipes and ingredients which led to their ultimate vision.

"Our vision is to become a preferred choice for ice-cream lovers regardless of its dairy-free status. The product is aimed at the mainstream, premium market, with its superior taste and positioning all setting the scene for a luxury dessert."

Festive Flavoured Ice Cream Sales Jump As Consumers Search For Alternative Christmas Sweet

Christmas flavoured ice cream is proving a hit for Huddersfield ice cream maker Yummy Yorkshire, which has already sold double the amount it did this time last year.

The award-winning artisan ice cream producer has to date churned out nearly 500 litres of its limited edition Christmas ices - twice as much as during the same period last December.

The Christmas flavours include Christmas Cake, Chocolate Orange, Irish Cream and White Chocolate & Cranberries.

The Christmas Cake flavour is loaded with fruit and is made using a special blend of spices. According to Yummy Yorkshire the ice cream is rich in taste and popular with traditionalists who are looking for an alternative to brandy butter on Christmas Day. The flavour first launched in 2007, the year that Yummy Yorkshire started trading, and has gained a loyal fan base since then. It also scooped an award with the Ice Cream Alliance in 2008.

The White Chocolate with Cranberries is a smoother, more indulgent flavour as is the Chocolate Orange, which has a malty taste with a hint of orange. Customers say it reminds them of hot chocolate and chocolate oranges. The Irish Cream flavour is made with a generous helping of everyone's favourite Irish whiskey and cream liqueur.

Louise Holmes co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire says: ""You wouldn't expect ice cream to be popular at this time of year but rich ice cream is a wonderful thing to have as a dessert even in the coldest weather."

"Many of our customers say that they are not keen on traditional Christmas Pudding so see our ice cream as a delicious alternative to indulge in over the festive period. We always have a big queue of customers out of the ice cream parlour on Christmas Eve making some last minute purchases.

"In 2010 the most popular was Christmas cake at 120 litres. So far there is a neck and neck situation between Christmas cake (132 litres) and Chocolate orange (144 litres). It will be interesting to see which flavour will win!"

The festive ices are available to buy from Yummy Yorkshire's Denby Dale ice cream parlour in 500ml and 2 litre tubs and on the cone. They are also available from selected shops across Yorkshire.

The Yummy Yorkshire ice cream parlour is located on the A629 between High Flatts and Ingbirchworth. For further information and directions visit www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk

Taste of nostalgia in a lick - Dandelion & Burdock Ice Cream launches

A Dandelion & Burdock flavoured ice cream has been launched by artisan ice cream producer Yummy Yorkshire, and what's more, it is available in time for Christmas!

Yummy Yorkshire, which is based near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, developed the flavour in homage to one its hometown’s best known companies; Ben Shaws, who brought the unique taste of Dandelion & Burdock to the people of the UK.

The retro ice cream flavour is made using a traditional style Dandelion & Burdock drink and has the same distinctive aniseed taste that the soft drink is famous for. It was first launched in August this year by Yummy Yorkshire as a limited edition flavour at the Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival but has now been rolled out due to popular demand.

Yummy Yorkshire’s Louise Holmes who is responsible for the development of new ice cream flavours says: “When I asked the team for ideas for a real Huddersfield themed flavour we knew Dandelion & Burdock was a winner as soon as it was mentioned. It was only intended as a limited edition flavour for the festival but it proved so popular that we took the decision to make it a permanent fixture in our flavour list.

“I think its popularity lies in the fact that it’s one of those flavours that has stood the test of time. It’s as popular now as it was when it first launched over 100 years ago.

“Our ice cream version has the same sweet, characteristic taste of the drink but with an added creaminess. People have said it reminds them of their childhood and that tasting it is a real trip down memory lane. It’s gained a bit of a cult following already.”

Yummy Yorkshire’s Dandelion & Burdock ice cream is available to buy from its ice cream parlour on the cone and in 500ml tubs priced at £3.50 each. It will also soon be available to buy in the 500ml tubs from selected outlets in Yorkshire including Hinchliffe’s Farm Shop and Brosters Farm Shop.

Further new flavours recently launched by Yummy Yorkshire include a range of Bonfire Night inspired ice creams including Toffee Apple, Yorkshire Parkin and Pumpkin.

Yummy Yorkshire is committed to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible in its recipes and the Parkin flavour is produced using Elland-based Lottie Shaw’s Seriously Good Yorkshire Parkin, while the Pumpkin flavour is made using fresh, pumpkin roasted with nutmeg and cinnamon for a little kick. The Toffee Apple ice cream consists of crisp apple ice cream with swirls of dulce de leche toffee.
