Co-op's The Apiary secures nationwide listing for Manchester's Northern Quarter-based dessert café, Black Milk

Manchester's Northern Quarter-based café, Black Milk, has secured a listing for its products in Co-op stores all over the UK after working with the convenience retailer’s accelerated support scheme for suppliers, known as the Apiary.

Located at 88 Oldham Street, Manchester, Black Milk will see products including its award winning Hazelnut Cream; Pistachio Cream and, White Chocolate sweet spreads stocked in approaching 300 Co-op stores nation-wide, including stores in the North West located in Manchester; Oldham, Ashton, Stockport, Bolton and Rochdale.

Co-op’s Apiary programme searches for new purpose-led small businesses with a unique point of difference. Successful applicants receive valuable tailored support, mentoring and advice on all aspects of the product journey towards gaining a listing in store.

Oliver Taylor who founded Black Milk said: “We're obviously really pleased to work closely with Co-op, especially as a fellow ethical Manchester-based business. This listing sees our spreads stocked in more communities than we have ever been in before, including here in Manchester and across the North West, and it has the potential to significantly raise awareness of our products.

“Since March 2015, our secret sauces and spreads have been developed in our café at the heart of the Northern Quarter, Manchester. These spreads have always been the most popular part of our menu. One day, whilst serving our luxury hazelnut milkshakes a customer asked for an extra shake jar filled with only our hazelnut cream – and we knew then that we had the perfect product to sell. Made with the finest of nuts, these spreads are truly memorable indulgences, we suggest serving them on top of bread, crumpets or croissants, baked into treats or even just eaten off the spoon.”

Kelly Orme, who is the Co-op Community Buying Manager for Local, World Foods & the Apiary, said: “We are really delighted to work with Black Milk, as the dessert café has developed an impressive reputation and following from its Northern Quarter base, and through our Apiary programme we have been able to spend time with owners Andy and Oliver and work closely with them to bring their sweet nut spreads into our stores.

"We are thrilled to reach this key milestone where the product is now on our shelves - we believe these spreads offer a real point of difference to interest, enthuse and excite Co-op Members and customers in our communities.”

Co-op further extends use of anti-theft ‘dummy display packaging’ to deter prolific and persistent offenders

The Co-op is further extending its trial of anti-theft, empty, ‘dummy display packaging’ for targeted products on its shelves to deter increasing levels of crime driven by what it has identified as "prolific and persistent" offenders.

The move is aimed at helping curb bulk-shoplifting, -described as ‘looting’ in the worst cases.

Industry reports indicate nearly 63% of crime is driven by repeat and prolific offenders, with drug or alcohol addictions and, local organised crime gangs, among the main drivers of offending.

The empty packaging will be employed across higher value products on its shelves which are, unfortunately, frequently targeted by criminals for re-sale, in stores where there's a local issue.

Products include: coffee; higher-value chocolates, washing powder and laundry gels. Shoppers merely need to take the dummy item to the colleague on the till who will exchange it for the real product. Co-op has previously used the anti-theft packaging in a limited number of stores, and expects it to 'continue to become a more familiar feature in retailing'.

A freedom of information (FOI) request showed, on average, 71% of serious retail crime isn't  responded to by police forces, and the Co-op is calling on all police forces and crime commissioners to target prolific offenders and local organised criminal gangs to reverse the existing environment where they operate with no fear of being caught or charged.

Kate Graham, Director of Operations, Co-op, said: “Crime in many communities is increasing, and it is known that repeat and prolific offenders and, local organised criminal gangs are driving serious incidents of brazen and violent theft in stores.

"It is an ongoing challenge for all retailers, and often a flashpoint for attacks and abuse towards our colleagues. Co-op continues to invest significantly in keeping colleagues and stores safe. This includes extending our use of dummy display cases to deter the incidents of ‘bulk-shoplifting’ or, ‘looting’, as it has been described, where criminals sweep products off shelves for re-sale.

"While we are doing all we can, we also need the police to play their part as too often, Forces fail to respond to desperate calls by our store teams and criminals operate in communities without any fear of consequences.”

Fakery will help the Co-op defeat criminals

The Co-op is extending its trial of anti-theft ‘dummy display packaging’ for targeted products on its shelves to deter rising levels of crime driven by prolific and persistent offenders and local organised crime gangs.

The aim of the move is to help curb bulk-shoplifting, described as ‘looting’ in the worst instances.

The packaging will be used across higher value products on its shelves frequently targeted by criminals for re-sale, in stores where there's a known, local issue. Products to be included are: coffee; washing powder and laundry gel, with shoppers simply taking the dummy display case to the shop's till where it will be swapped for the actual product. The Co-op has previously used the anti-theft packaging in a limited number of stores, and it expects it to 'continue to become a more familiar feature in retailing'.

Last month, July, the Co-op revealed it had witnessed record levels of crime, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour with nearly 1,000 incidents every day in the six months to June (2023) that's a 35% Year on year increase. Industry reports reveal almost two-thirds (63%) of crime is driven by repeat and prolific offenders, with drug or alcohol addiction issues and local organised criminal gangs, among the main drivers of offending.

Co-op warned this level of out-of-control crime isn't sustainable and could even see some communities become a no-go area for local stores with many Police forces refusing to prioritise retail crime. A freedom of information (FOI) request revealed on average, 71% of serious retail crime aren't responded to by Police, and the Co-op is calling on all police forces and crime commissioners to target prolific offenders and local organised crime gangs to reverse the existing environment where they operate with apparent impunity and without fear of being caught or charged.

Kate Graham, Co-op's Director of Operations, said: “Crime in many communities is growing and it's known repeat and prolific offenders and local organised crime gangs are driving serious incidents of brazen and violent theft in stores."

Kate went on to explain: "It's an ongoing challenge for all retailers, and often a flashpoint for attacks and abuse towards our colleagues. Co-op continues to invest significantly in keeping colleagues and stores safe. This includes extending use of dummy display cases to deter the incidents of ‘bulk-shoplifting’ or, ‘looting’, as it's described, where criminals sweep products off shelves for re-sale.

"While we are doing all we can, we need the police to play their part as all too often, Forces fail to respond to desperate calls by our store teams and criminals operate in communities without any fear of consequences.”

The Co-op has invested in excess of £200M in recent years in colleague and community safety initiatives to counter criminal behaviour, per store this equates to four times the average convenience sector spend on security and safety measures.

With safety a key priority, the Co-op uses a wide range of  measures to deter criminal behaviour. This includes: interactive and remote monitored CCTV; body-worn cameras, which can transmit real time audio and visual footage to its security operations centre at the touch of a button; communication headsets for frontline colleagues; covert and non-covert guarding; Smartwater and GPS tracked security cases, plus anti-theft ‘dummy display cases’ which Co-op believes will continue to become a more familiar feature in retailing.

Co-op announces biggest ever price investment on everyday essentials with members saving more

Today (Wednesday 2nd August) Co-op has announced its biggest ever single investment in pricing of £70 million, as it extends its ‘member-only’ pricing across everyday essentials, launching with a list of nearly 200 fixed lines including milk, eggs and bread.

This move, reportedly the biggest investment ever announced by a convenience retailer on pricing, sees Co-op, with over 2,400 food stores and 4.58 million active members, accelerate its member price benefits to provide new, lower ‘member-only’ prices on the everyday essential products that are the most shopped by their convenience shoppers, giving Co-op Members a chance to save up to 11% on retail prices with Co-op British Milk one pint at 85p, six Co-op free range eggs at £1.40 , whilst a Co-op sliced loaf will be 76p.

Co-op insight revealed, rather than loyalty pricing on an array of products which change every few weeks, shoppers think there's more benefit from lower prices on the items they buy the most, so it makes the biggest difference to their regular food spend.

This new significant price investment means Co-op Members will be able to save on products from milk, free-range eggs and bread to bacon and fresh chicken, too.

The £70m investment also includes a retail price reduction on more than 600 lines, ensuring they are in line or cheaper than other national convenience stores, and taking the total invested into Co-op prices this year to £90 million overall.

Matt Hood, who is the MD for Co-op Food, said: “Whilst food inflation is starting to slow down, household budgets remain under massive pressure, so this major price investment will make a real and tangible difference for millions of Co-op customers and members.

"This £70m investment is the most significant ever made by a convenience retailer, allowing us to turbo charge our member pricing proposition for the millions of our members who shop with us every day, by tailoring the price cuts to those key lines we know our members buy the most.

"We're focused on delivering member-value in a way that will make the biggest possible difference to their weekly budgets, and I’m clear there should be no compromise on quality and value by shopping in convenience. This isn't a loyalty scheme but rather the Co-op difference in action, whereby the people who own our business, our members, benefit every time they shop with the Co-op."

Closely following its business-model principles as a cooperative, Co-op continues to support its members and their communities through the cost-of-living crisis whilst still planning and investing for growth over the medium and longer-term.

The investment has been made possible by the major cost savings and business improvements introduced over the past year in the face of rising inflation and increased operational costs.

This move follows the introduction of ‘member only offers’ in April, where Co-op members can get exclusive lower priced promotions, an initiative which has seen nearly 40,000 new members sign up every month to take advantage of the deals, as Co-op targets to grow its member base by a million more members over the next five years.

The member-only offers will continue, alongside member only pricing, providing even more opportunity for savings and means a shopper could save on average £500 a year as a Co-op Member.

Underpinning this investment is the core proposition of Co-op’s membership whereby:

Members own the business and play an intrinsic part in the governance of the organisation

Members enjoy a wide number of benefits including money back on own brand purchases, personalised offers and gamification via the Co-op app, pre-sale opportunities for Co-op Live and music festival tickets

Co-op members help raise significant funds donated by Co-op to fund thousands of community causes, every year. £116m has been donated to communities since 2016

Co-op Member saving examples (all prices relevant for 14.07.23):

- Co-op British Milk 1 Pint: Co-op Member price 85p

- Co-op British Medium Free-Range Eggs 6s: Co-op Member price £1.40

- Co-op White Toastie Bread 800g: Co-op Member price 76p

- Co-op British Chicken Breast Fillet PMP 300g: Co-op Member Price £2.50

A £15 million investment in lowering prices was announced in April and Co-op has also invested an additional £5million into members offers.

Figure based on member purchase frequency and member discount, and total savings from purchasing both member-only promotions and member pricing.

The Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives with interests across food, funerals, insurance and legal services.

Owned by millions of UK consumers, the Co-op operates over 2,400 food stores, over 800 funeral homes and provides products to over 5,000 other stores, including those run by independent co-operative societies and through its wholesale business, Nisa Retail Limited.

Employing almost 60,000 people, the Co-op has an annual turnover of over £11billion and is a recognised leader for its sustainability and community-led programmes. The Co-op exists to meet members’ needs and stand up for the things it believes in.

Warning: "You could lose your Co-op store due to criminal gangs"

Criminal gangs with an apparent ‘freedom to loot’ are driving spiralling store crime and out of control levels of crime could deprive communities of their local stores, the Co-op warns.

Retail crime surges to absolutely record levels with repeat offenders and criminal gangs operating exempt from consequences, new data released by Co-op reveals yesterday on Thursday, 27 July.

The Co-op has recorded the highest ever levels of retail crime, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour with almost 1,000 incidents every day in the six months to June (2023), a 35% YOY increase.

Unfortunately many Police forces are refusing to prioritise retail crime with FOI revealing average 71% of serious retail crime not responded to by the Police.

The Co-op argues that criminals have an apparent ‘freedom to loot’ with rampant levels of out-of-control crime predominantly committed by repeat and prolific offenders, with drug or alcohol addictions and, local organised crime gangs, among the main drivers of offending.

The Co-op has issued calls for "urgent changes" in Police response and for all Police Forces to target repeat and prolific offenders to reverse the existing environment in many cities where crime gangs operate, exempt from any consequences.

Retail crime surges to record levels with repeat offenders and criminal gangs operating exempt from consequences, new data released by Co-op reveals.

Co-op stores have seen crime, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour surge upwards by 35% year-on-year, with in excess of 175,000 incidents recorded in the first six months of this year. That's nearly 1,000 incidents each and every day.

With one inner city London store ‘looted’ three times in a just one single day, Co-op warns this level of out-of-control crime is unsustainable and could even see some communities become no-go areas for local stores.

The Co-op calls on all police forces and crime commissioners to target prolific offenders and local organised criminal gangs to reverse the existing environment in many cities where they operate without fear of being caught or charged.

Reports show nearly two-thirds (63%) of crime is driven by repeat and prolific offenders, with drug or alcohol addictions and, local organised crime gangs, among the main drivers of offending.

But worryingly a Freedom of Information request by Co-op has highlighted that Police forces, worryingly, failed to respond in 71% of serious retail crimes reported. With some, according to their own data, not responding to nine in ten serious incidents reported.

With crime often the flashpoint for attacks, assault, abuse and anti-social behaviour, Co-op rrevealed that front-line store workers have seen physical assaults increase year-on-year by almost one-third (30%) and, anti-social behaviour and verbal abuse rising by a fifth (20%).

Said Matt Hood, who is the Co-op Food MD: “We know retail crime is driven by repeat and prolific offenders and also organised crime gangs.

"It's a difficult ongoing challenge for all retailers, and in the worst instances can even be described as ‘looting’.

"I've seen some really, truly horrific incidents of brazen and violent theft in our stores, where my store colleagues felt scared and threatened. I see first-hand how this criminal behaviour also erodes the very fabric of our communities, it’s hard to over-emphasise how important urgent change is. Co-op has invested significantly in keeping colleagues and stores safe, but we need the police to play their part. All too often, Police forces simply fail to respond to desperate calls by our store teams, and criminals are operating in communities without any fear of consequences.”

Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) CEO James Lowman, said: “Our members are at the sharp end, seeing crime in their communities steadily worsening. Shop theft is rising because repeat offenders and organised crime gangs are targeting local shops to steal goods to resell.

"This organised criminal activity exploits vulnerable people by getting them to steal to order in exchange for their next fix, funds the illegal drug trade, and harms businesses that provide essential services to communities.

"The police must have to face up to theft, violence and anti-social behaviour in and around local shops. We believe that cracking down on the criminals who account for the majority of this crime against our members would be the most effective way to make our communities safer.”

Paddy Lillis, Usdaw's General Secretary says: “Evidence is mounting that retail crime is increasing, added to this Co-op report is a 24% uplift in official police recorded incidents of shoplifting. This is very concerning for our members in retail, because shoplifting is not a victimless crime.

"Theft from shops has long been a major flashpoint for violence and abuse against shopworkers and, as the Co-op rightly says, it's often linked to organised criminal gangs. Having to deal with repeated and persistent shoplifters can cause issues beyond the theft itself like anxiety, fear and in some cases physical harm to retail workers.

"There really must be better coordination to ensure that government, retail employers, police and the courts work together to help protect shopworkers, giving them the respect they deserve.”

Phillip Davies, who is the Conservative MP for Shipley and the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Customer Service, added: “This patchy record of Police forces uncovered by the Co-op is simply not good enough.

"Our frontline workers deserve far, far better. It's no good having stricter laws in place to punish offenders if the Police aren't properly investigating these crimes and ensure perpetrators are punished. Those Police forces with the worst records must find out what those with the best record what they are doing and ensure they bring themselves up to the same standards.”

Where clear co-operation around this issue exists it's really seen to be making a difference. The Co-op works closely with a number of forces including Nottinghamshire who have been effective in tackling persistent and prolific offenders.

But the issues run deeper than policing alone. For example in Nottinghamshire, this year, 17 prolific offenders were removed from the streets, with a combined 5.6 years of custodial sentences, and a further 13 repeat offenders given a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) or rehabilitation orders.

Says Police Inspector Oliver Vale of Nottinghamshire Police: “The collaborative work that's taken place between Nottinghamshire Police and our partners in Co-Op, Mitie and NBCS has provided us with a fantastic chance to identify those not only committing the most harm in our retail communities but to our communities as a whole.

"Retail crime is something we recognise within Nottinghamshire Police as being an issue that must be proactively tackled but we simply can't do this alone and the information sharing model Op Synergy has developed has allowed for us to collaboratively secure significant convictions and prohibitive orders on some of our most prolific retail offenders by working closely with the Co-op.”

The Co-op has invested over £200M in recent years in colleague and community safety to counter criminal behaviour. Per store this equates to four times the average sector spend on security and safety measures.

Co-op uses a wide range of targeted measures to deter criminal behaviour. Such as: interactive and remote monitored CCTV; body-worn cameras; communication headsets for frontline colleagues; covert and non-covert guarding and security; Smartwater; GPS tracked security cases and, ‘dummy’ packaging on shelves, which Co-op believes will become a more prevalent and familiar sight in retailing.

The convenience retailer also successfully campaigned for stricter sentencing in law for violent incident against retail workers viat its Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities campaign - with the new law.

That's Food and Drink is concerned that, if convenience store chains and independently owned convenience stores are forced to shut down or severely curtail opening hours many vulnerable people within the locality of the shop will have nowhere to buy food and vegetables, etc, without having to make long journeys to distant supermarkets.

Co-op and Starship Technologies have confirmed the expansion of autonomous online grocery deliveries across more neighbourhoods in Leeds in collaboration with Leeds City Council.

Following a successful pilot launched last November, with 20,000 residents within the Adel and Tinshill area of Leeds have access to Starship’s delivery service. Now a further 12,000 households in communities in the Kippax and Swarcliffe areas of Leeds can now access Co-op groceries delivered by robots quickly, easily and conveniently.

Orders are placed via the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download via iOS and Android, with residents in Kippax and Swarcliffe able to choose from a wide range of groceries which are picked fresh from two local Co-op stores, and delivered in the local community.

With a delivery fee starting from only 99p, customers can order their delivery to arrive in under an hour and watch the robot travel in real-time via a special interactive map. They'll receive an alert when the robot arrives, and can meet and unlock it via the app.

Chris Conway, Co-op's eCommerce Director, said: “Co-op stores are well placed in the heart of local communities to provide quick, easy, convenient grocery home deliveries for time-pressed shoppers, whether that is a full shop or, for last-minute top-ups and forgotten items.

"We're committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to our products and services, and delighted to be able to roll-out robot deliveries to provide further online flexibility and choice for consumers across Leeds.”

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for sustainable development and infrastructure, said: “Residents and families of Adel and Tinshill have welcomed Starship robots delivering their groceries, with over three-quarters of survey respondents in support of the introduction of the robots in the area.

"The expansion to Kippax and Swarcliffe will mean more people in Leeds can benefit from a zero-carbon alternative to grocery deliveries. As a council we’re pleased initiatives like this can help towards reducing the emissions of the last-mile delivery journey. It helps us to meet our pledge of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030 by aiming to reduce short journeys to the shops made by car."

Andrew Curtis, who is the Director of European Operations at Starship Technologies, said: “The feedback we have received since first launching in Leeds last year was overwhelmingly positive and we are very pleased to be able to extend the benefits the robots have provided to an extra 12,000 homes from now on. More and more people are conscious of trying to reduce their carbon footprint and our robots helps them with this by eliminating the need for short car journeys to pick up their groceries.”

Starship’s robots are powered by 100% renewable electricity, with an average delivery for a robot consuming as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea. Time-pressed shoppers use the service for its speed, ease and convenience to fit around their busy lives, including the 24% of Starship’s existing customers in Leeds who either have, or live with someone, who has an accessibility need.

This expansion in Leeds continues robot delivery growth across Yorkshire following the launch of the service with Co-op in areas of Leeds and, in Wakefield earlier in the year. The robots are also familiar and popular sight in other places across the UK, including Trafford (which is in Greater Manchester), Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford and Cambridge.

Since launching commercial deliveries in 2018, Starship’s 2,000+ fleet of robots have safely completed more than five million deliveries around the world, with consumers using the service to save time and fit shopping around their busy lives. Globally, the robots undertake 140,000 road crossings every single day.

I wonder when our local Co-op will get robotic delivery options?

Co-op focuses efforts on member prices with new creative ad campaign

Co-op has taken a distinctly different direction with its latest advertising campaign to support its membership proposition and the launch of Member Prices, in a move that's aimed at bringing designed to bring a playful approach to a busy and advertising environment.

The multi-channel campaign, launching today, Wednesday 19 July, across TV, print, digital out of home and in Co-op stores, focuses on the money-saving benefit of being a Co-op Member and features a regular Co-op shopper, visually represented as a ‘Proper Donut’, who loves a bargain and waxes lyrical about Co-op’s new Member Prices.

The character is shown shopping in store while also engaging with other customers informing them how shoppers “save a few quid on items, just by being a Co-op Member” and encouraging them to take advantage of the savings on offer.

The advert’s final line acknowledges the feature of the donut character and states: “Even a proper donut knows Members save more with Member Prices. Sign up and save today.” The donut character will feature prominently across the entire media mix of print, digital out-of-home and social adverts.

Kenyatte Nelson, who is Co-op's Chief Membership and Customer Officer said: “At a time when the cost-of-living crisis is increasingly prevalent, I’m clear that Member Prices are now one of the most tangible reasons to join our Co-op.

"Along with our creative agency, Lucky Generals, we’ve created a fun and memorable approach to this campaign designed to grab the attention of consumers, communicating the simple message that Members save more to drive new acquisition.

“The premise is simple; there are only upsides to being a Co-op Member because we exist to create and return value to our Members. Whether that value comes in the form of Member Prices and personalised offers on products that they love, two per cent back on every pound spent on Co-op products, two per cent back to local community causes or having a direct say in how the business is run. Our members own our Co-op and our Co-op is a wonderful thing to own. I’m excited to see how our ‘Proper Donut’, and our Member Prices, are welcomed!"

In April 2023, the UK’s leading convenience retailer introduced Member Prices and this membership benefit is one of the Co-op’s top communications priorities for 2023. Co-op has committed 65 percent of its annual marketing budget to promote the initiative, including a new visual identity, significant media spend behind the ‘Members Save More’ campaign and the introduction of innovative channels.

The new campaign, designed to not only raise awareness of the new Member prices initiative and to also drive Membership acquisition and shift Member sales penetration, was led by Co-op’s recently appointed Chief Membership and Customer officer, Kenyatte Nelson. The concept was created by Lucky Generals and the full campaign was developed across Co-op's agency partners, including MullenLowe Group, Dentsu and ITG.

The Co-op has announced it's set to expand its popular Goose Island frozen food range with the launch of two new exciting pizza flavours, taking the total number of products in the collaboration to a magnificent seven.

New additions to the bar snacks range include a Double Pepperoni Pizza (515g) and BBQ Cheese Feast Pizza (510g), which have both been developed with the bold American flavours from Goose Island’s IPA to enhance the takeaway style home dining experience with authentic Italian cooking methods.

A testimony to Co-op’s commitment to high-quality produce, the pizzas are actually made in the heart of Italy, hand-stretched with 24hr leavened dough and baked in a traditional wood-fired oven, thus ensuring a light and airy crust.

Comprising of a deep pan pizza base topped with Goose Island IPA BBQ sauce, the Double Pepperoni Pizza is nicely finished off with mozzarella and pepperoni pieces whilst the Cheese Feast Pizza combines mozzarella, Emmental, provolone and Italian hard cheese.

Targeting foodie customers who are seeking out quick and easy dinner solutions, the new pizzas are an ideal match for the brewery’s beers which includes Goose Island IPA Single Can (330m) and Goose Island IPA Cans (4 x 330ml). The pizzas also join the existing line-up of Goose Island snacking SKUs which launched back in 2021 and are infused with the brewery’s iconic award winning IPA. Co-op expands Chilled Latte range with exclusive Member's only competition

The Co-op is continuing to expand its Ever Ground “grounded in good” brand with the introduction of a new caramel flavoured coffee milk drink to its own-brand coffee label. Launching initially for festivalgoers this summer, Ever Ground Caramel Latte (250ml) will be the third addition to the 100% Fairtrade chilled coffee range.

Co-op Ever Ground Caramel Latte

Ever Ground Caramel Latte is a blend of 100% Fairtrade arabica beans with notes of dark chocolate, citrus and a subtle nutty spiciness, uses 100% British milk, and a rich caramel flavour. The new addition will be available alongside Co-op’s Ever Ground Latte (250ml) and Oat Latte (250ml) providing shoppers with a well-rounded choice of coffee flavours to enjoy whilst they are on-the-go.

Revellers at Download Festival were the first to get a taste of the new flavour which launched at the site on 6 June on promotion at £1.20 (exclusive member pricing). The drink is available to purchase from 600 Co-op stores across the UK, priced at £1.90.

To appeal to a younger shopper base and celebrate the launch of the drink at Live Nation festivals, Co-op will launch an exclusive competition with a prominent ‘win’ call out on-pack – a first for the retailer on an own brand product.

Those who purchase any Ever Ground product and swipe their membership cards at checkout will automatically be entered into a special free prize draw to win a pair of tickets (with six winners in total) to one of the six Live Nation festivals: Download, Isle of Wight, Latitude, Creamfields, Reading and Leeds.

Co-op’s “grounded in good” Ever Ground brand launched back in 2020, providing consumers with an on-the-go 100% Fairtrade coffee from modern self-serve machines inside Co-op stores. Opting for Fairtrade coffee guarantees a fair price for producers, with every purchase allowing farmers to grow their communities economically and socially whilst investing in more sustainable farming.

Daniella Messer, Co-op’s Strategic Own-Brand Manager, said: “The initial launch of the Ever Ground brand in 2020 has been received positively by our customers and members, demonstrating an appetite for convenient coffee that satisfies on taste and delivers on values. It’s convenience without compromise at Co-op and we’re consistently proving quality can be taken to go.

"We’re also kicking off the launch with our first ever own-brand festival competition, giving members and customers the chance to attend a Live Nation festival in 2024.

"For nearly 30 years, Co-op has championed the Fairtrade concept and has pioneered ethical practices and promises to continue to use our own brand products to bring our members and customers better value, whilst doing the right thing for their producers and the planet. Our customers can enjoy our 100% Fairtrade coffee safe in the knowledge they're playing their part in helping communities across the world.”

The full Ever Ground range includes Ever Ground Whole Bean (200g/£4.00), Roast & Ground Coffee (200g, £4.00), Latte (250ml/£1.90), Oat Latte (250ml/£1.90) and Caramel Latte (250ml/£1.90). Community Fridge pilot launched in Greenacres

The project was announced by Oldham Council Leader Amanda Chadderton and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and will aim to help fight local food insecurity.

A Community Fridge is a space that brings people together to eat, connect, learn new skills and reduce food waste. It is a site where local people can share food, this includes surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens.

On Wednesday 1 March, Oldham Council Leader Amanda Chadderton and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham launched a Community Fridge at Greenacres Community Centre in Oldham.

The fridge will be run by community groups with the main purpose of saving fresh food from going to waste. This is now more important than ever with the current high costs of living and less food waste will be a benefit for the environment.

The journey for this Community Fridge Pilot began with the Co-op and the environmental charity Hubbub supporting the ‘In Our Nature’ programme which is a partnership between Manchester Climate Change Agency, Hubbub, Groundwork Greater Manchester, Amity, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research and Manchester City Council.

Following the success of the Community Fridges through the In Our Nature programme, Hubbub and the Co-op were asked if they could pilot and fund a cluster of Community Fridges in a Greater Manchester locality which would provide one in every 30-50,000 neighbourhood footprint. They agreed to undertake this pilot in Oldham as there was already a Community Fridge based at the Failsworth Co-op Academy.

This cluster pilot is a first and Hubbub, the Co-op and Action Together have worked collaboratively to identify suitable locations and host organisations in communities to ensure there is equal coverage across the district.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “I congratulate Hubbub, Co-op and Action Together for launching their Community Fridge pilot in Oldham following a request by the Greater Manchester Food Security Action Network to pilot a cluster model in the city region. This initiative will involve working with the local community to tackle food insecurity and reduce food waste amidst the difficult times we’re in with the cost of living crisis and the climate crisis.

“Our recent Greater Manchester Residents Survey found that 8 in 10 people say their cost of living has increased over the past month and around 70,000 more households are experiencing food insecurity compared to last spring. People are clearly struggling and that’s why projects such as Community Fridges are so vital in providing a safety net for those who need it. It will also contribute to our ambitions towards carbon net zero by reducing avoidable food waste by making sure it goes to people. This community-led approach can help residents access healthy, nutritious and culturally appropriate food in a dignified way whilst also helping the environment.

"I hope this pilot is a success and I look forward to seeing it rolled out across Greater Manchester.”

Oldham Council Leader, Amanda Chadderton, said: "With high costs of living continuing to impact everyone we need to urgently address the issue of food waste and food insecurity.

"In September of 2022, over a quarter of households (nationally) with children experienced food insecurity, that represents over four million children. We also know that shockingly, 27% of UK children are living in poverty, and in Oldham this figure at almost 40%.

"For young people, some of which the cost of living crisis has heavily impacted, food insecurity contributes to increased anxiety, poor mental health, poor social and emotional development, and a reduced level of achievement in school.

"That’s why I’m so pleased to see this scheme taking place as I know it will make a real difference to families and those who are struggling. One step at a time, ideas like this will help us work toward our goal of ending food insecurity and the inequalities it brings.

"Thank you to everyone involved in this project – you are making a real difference."

Matt Hood, MD at Co-op Food said: “We recognise our responsibility to make a genuine difference to the communities we serve and absolutely believe that everybody should have access to good food. We’re pleased to be working with our partners to grow the essential community fridge network to directly help people in Oldham come together to eat, connect, learn new skills and reduce food waste. It is a real and significant step for this community to ensure fairer access to food for all.”

“For all at Co-op, this feels like a real step in the right direction to ensure fairer access to food for all.”

Aoife Allen, Director, Hubbub said: “Today’s launch shows true community spirit and co-operation in action. We are proud that there are now over 450 brilliant community fridges across the UK, where anyone can meet their neighbours and take home good food that would otherwise go to waste. With support from Co-op and all our partners in Greater Manchester, we look forward to seeing the benefits that these community fridges will bring to Oldham.”

The Community Fridge Network is coordinated by Hubbub and it connects ‘fridges’ across the UK. Hubbub have partnered with Co-op to fund 500 fridges by the end of 2023. It is a support network for groups running community fridges to share knowledge and skills and to ask questions.

The Network offers free guidance on how communities can set up their own fridge and provides comprehensive support, design assets, a knowledge sharing forum, health and safety templates and discounted fridges and freezers.

More information about Community Fridges are available on the hubbub website: Community Fridge Network, https://www.hubbub.org.uk/the-community-fridge.

Co-Op brings back heritage apple juice

The Co-operative is reintroducing its heritage apple juice, made from 1,000 varieties of rare apples, and quadrupling production after selling out last year.

An extra 28,635 litres of The Co-operative Farms’ Truly Irresistible Tillington 1000 Pressed Apple Juice have been produced following high demand for the fresh juice last year, which sold out within weeks of hitting the shelves.

This year 38,000 one-litre bottles, compared to 9,365 in 2011, will be available at 608 selected Co-operative Food stores across the country, priced at £2.29 each, this week (from February 9).
The 1,000 varieties of apple tree, used to create Tillington 1,000 pressed apple juice, had faced being taken out of commercial production before The Co-operative Farms bought one of three identical collections for its fruit farm at Tillington in Herefordshire in 2008.
The other two parts of the collection were bought by the Prince of Wales and a private Scottish collector, but The Co-operative’s collection is the only one being put to a commercial use.
David Gardner, Head of Fruit Operations at Co-operative Farms, said: “Thanks to an even greater apple yield from our maturing orchard we are in a position to meet the high demand for this fresh apple juice.
“These apples offer a real taste of British history, and were in real danger of disappearing forever. To be able to turn them into a delicious and popular drink is extremely exciting and is an example of what The Co-operative, as a major food retailer and the UK’s largest farming business, can achieve.”
The collection of heritage trees includes “Isaac Newton’s tree”, which is identical to and originated from the apple tree in the garden of Newton’s home, which helped him discover gravity. Other rare varieties grown at Tillington, and included in the heritage apple drink, include Great Expectations, Fairie Queen, Northern Spy, Forty Shilling, Dick’s Bill and Bloody Ploughman.
For further information about Co-operative stores stocking the product, customers can contact the Co-operative Customer Careline on (freephone) 0800 0686 727.
