AB Foods - results slightly better than expected

Associated British Foods, who owns Primark, has announced a pre close trading statement:

Retail sales expected to be around £9.0bn, 15% ahead of sales last year with like-for-like sales growth of 9%

Good growth in Grocery, Ingredients and Sugar

Outlook for this financial year is slightly better than previous expectations of Group adjusted operating profit to be moderately ahead of last year

Charlie Huggins, who is the manager of the ‘Quality Shares Portfolio’ at Wealth Club, said: "A strong performance from AB Food's non-retail divisions has led to a modest increase to profit expectations for the year. Sales remained strong at Primark, which is impressive given the tough economic environment and the recent unhelpful weather conditions, although margins were slightly weaker than expected due to issues involving higher theft.

"Encouragingly, the inflationary headwinds for Primark appear to be abating. The group expects Primark's margins to recover strongly next year driven by lower material costs, a weaker US dollar and lower freight costs, all of which have improved in recent weeks. This should help drive a stronger profit performance next year, even if pressures on the consumer persist.

"The sales performance from Primark this year has been very solid. This is impressive given the recent demise of Wilko's and the travails of other High Street brands. It shows that the High Street isn't dead and shoppers still love a bargain, but you need a brand that resonates strongly with consumers. Primark has that. This should leave it strongly positioned whichever way the economic winds blow."

Got food and drink items to give away? How about a food bank?

From time-to-time manufactures, suppliers, exporters, wholesalers and PR companies find themselves with food and drink stocks that are surplus to requirements

Nobody is happy with throwing food out and it's distressing to see examples of this when (usually US-based) dumpsterdiver YouTube channels show that retailers, etc have thrown away perfectly good food, even though it's sometimes nowhere near the best before or use by date.

However! There is an alternative to throwing good food away, food can be donated to food banks and other charitable groups.

Holland and Barrett launches new food range

Holland & Barrett, which is the UK’s top health and wellness retailer, is getting back to its roots with the relaunch of its entire food range. 

The first 500 products are hitting the shelves this month, September, and this marks the beginning the biggest transformation of its food category in its entire 150-year history.

Consisting in excess of over 300 entirely new own brand lines, designed from scratch and over 200 branded lines, the new range will see the return of over 70 fresh, chilled food and drinks to H&B’s high-street stores. 

In a market first, the new H&B range will also offer customers foods by key wellness need or specialist diet, with new lines designed by Holland & Barrett’s expert nutritionists, chefs and in-house experts for gut health, women’s health and skin health. 

From fresh foods to healthy snacks, and food cupboard items, the range is designed to complement its customers’ weekly grocery shop with simple, easy swaps that are packed with nutritious benefits. 

The launch sees Holland & Barrett become the first high-street retailer to include the concept of ‘Plant Points’ on food labelling, helping encourage customers to eat at least 30 different plants a week to support their overall wellbeing. 

In what is another first, customers can have free conversations with trained advisors in all stores and online who will be able to personalise a menu that includes the best nutritional solutions based on the goals of their a customers.

Alex Dower, who is the Chief Commercial Officer, Holland & Barrett, said: “We want to make wellness a way of life for everyone and what you eat is the starting place for a healthier life. 

"That’s why we’ve spent two years redeveloping and completely overhauling our food offering. We’ve brought together a team of nutritionists, chefs, ingredient specialists and in-house scientific experts, alongside 50 new artisan and small food suppliers to create a truly pioneering and diet-inclusive range. 

"Our priority has been on creating delicious food, bursting with benefits. This coupled with significant investment in a new proposition, range identity and marketing support will see H&B regain its place as the go to for the latest in healthy food on the high street.”

Alex Dower continues, “We're proud to be the first retailer to include Plant Points on our food labels.  Plant Points are a handy way to make sure you're eating a nutrient-packed diet.  We’re encouraging our customers to aim for at least 30 different plants a week to support their overall wellbeing. 

"There’s growing and emerging evidence that we need to go beyond five-a-day and focus on getting plant variety into our diets to support our gut health, and in turn our overall health. That’s why we’re adding plant points to our labelling, as part of our focus on raising awareness of the benefits of good gut health.”

Holland & Barrett has been a leader in health and nutrition for over 150 years. Established in 1870 as a grocer in Bishop’s Stortford, it has grown to 800 stores in the UK and Ireland alone, and healthy food has remained core to its proposition. 

"Known for supporting millions of people in the UK who follow specialist diets, from introducing the first vegan ranges to foods for lower carb, low and no sugar as well as those with food allergies or intolerances. The new range caters to over 10 different allergies and dietary intolerances as well as support for specific conditions and wellness needs including gut health, women’s health, immunity, energy and more.

As a specialist retailer, H&B’s size means it can work with small, artisan producers across the UK and Ireland to bring local, first to market products to its shelves. This includes Jess’s Dairy, a third-generation dairy farmer from Gloucestershire who H&B has partnered with to bring a kefir drinking yogurt to market. Hodmedods, who supply the range with British quinoa, flamingo peas and further grains and pulses, work directly with farmers committed to increasing biodiversity and are leading the way in regenerative farming. 

The new No 42 vegan sausages are created by Simplicity in partnership with chef, Ian Rankin, and are made with six plants and the power of fermentation to offer a healthier alternative.

The re-launch of H&B Food is being supported by a £5m marketing campaign, across out of home, print, digital, social and PR. It comes at a time when the retailer has also been investing in its store estate, opening 19 new stores and refitting 16 in the last calendar year (Oct ’22 – Sept’ 23).

Waitrose to launch new own-brand range - Japan Menyū

The 20th September will mark the exciting launch of a new Waitrose own-brand range, Japan Menyū, which is an innovative, delicious and high quality range which brings great Japanese-inspired food to your plates.

Their new own-brand range will include new products which will span across ready meals, centrepieces, sides and snacks, and offers customers familiar flavours and dishes for all eating occasions.

Japanese cuisine is a growing trend, growing +15% compared to last year on social discussions (Tastewise), with Google searches also growing rapidly compared to previous months. 

Waitrose have also seen a significant growth in traffic on waitrose.com to their  dedicated Japanese recipes page and searches on their website for ‘tempura prawns’, ‘tonkatsu’, ‘soba noodles’ and ‘matcha’ are all up 113%, 75%, 69% and 37% respectively, compared to last year, showing the growing demand for Japanese foods and flavours amongst our customers.  

Said Charlotte Di Cello, who is Waitrose's Commercial Director: “I’m particularly excited about our new Japan Menyū range, having enjoyed so much of it growing up, because my mum is Japanese.

Their range, which will be available in their shops, online, Uber Eats and on Deliveroo, offers their customers convenience while still allowing them to create the restaurant experience in their own homes. 

With versatility across all of the dishes, customers will be able to pair different centrepieces and meal bases to suit all taste buds. 

While the Japan Menyū range has exclusively been created by their team of chefs and product developers, Waitrose also consulted with Yuki Gomi and the Asian Leadership Collective to ensure they considered cultural traditions in the development of their range and designs and included the most incredible dishes for their customers. 

Yuki Gomi,  who is a Japanese chef, food writer & cookery teacher, said: “It’s been such a great pleasure to collaborate with the Waitrose team on their new Japanese range. 

"From the name of the range to the delicious selection of dishes that have been developed, so much care and consideration has been taken to deliver an amazing range that I know their customers will love.”

Zoe Simons, who is the Waitrose Senior Development Chef, said: “Our team had an absolutely brilliant time building our Japan Menyū range. 

"We’ve taken familiar flavours twe know our customers will love and created them into a range of brilliant products, including 13 vegetarian dishes, 10 of which are suitable for vegans. From the trends our team has seen and the data that’s been gathered, we know our customers are looking to expand their dining options even further and already enjoy delicious Japanese food." 

Zoe wen t on to say: “Whether customers are looking for a convenient Friday night dinner that’s already prepared or some extra additions to complement their own cookery creations, our Japan Menyū range has something for all eating occasions.”

A spokesman said: "Waitrose already sells over 200 Japanese products, including brands like as Itsu, Wagamama, Kikkoman and Taiko Sushi, plus the 124 Sushi Daily kiosks we have available across our shops. 

"We also offer Japanese ingredients within our own Cooks’ Ingredients range, including the Yuzu Juice, Shichimi Togarashi and Japanese Rice Vinegar  - our new Japan Menyū complements our existing offering perfectly. 

"To allow customers to create the full Japanese experience at home, we will also be launching Reusable Bamboo Chopsticks, as well as a selection of John Lewis cookware that make the perfect serving dishes for the Waitrose Japan Menyū range.

"Also, as part of the range we will be launching three new No.1 Bonsai plants within our horticulture range, as well as a first to market Ikebana flower bouquet. Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arranging, a symbol of refinement - with minimalist and precise arrangement, Ikebana is an ancient Japanese tradition of artisan floristry."

Food Drink Devon Awards Unveils This Year's Outstanding Finalists

With the eagerly anticipated annual Food Drink Devon Awards taking place next month in October, Food Drink Devon is absolutely thrilled to announce this year's finalists in the prestigious awards.  

Following the closure of entries in the Spring (April), a distinguished panel of judges and industry experts embarked on a rigorous process of assessing and judging the unprecedented number of entries.  

Including many of Devon's the county's most respected and influential artisan food and drink producers, over 300 products were tasted and sampled, 95 hospitality establishments visited, 30 retail outlets scrutinised and eight Training School / Learning Experiences were participated in, to select Devon's finest.

Winners are to be announced during the organisation's glittering and prestigious black tie award ceremony on Monday 2nd October at Sandy Park, home of Premiership rugby team Exeter Chiefs.  

Returning for the 12th year, the gold standard industry accolades celebrate the best the region has to offer, with categories being open to members and non-members of Food Drink Devon. Awards include  'Producer Awards', 'Retail Awards', 'Hospitality Awards' and 'Sustainability Pioneer Award'.

Food Drink Devon's 'Sustainability Pioneer Award' shines an important light on businesses going the extra mile in their endeavours to be environmentally friendly.  

This year's finalists for the 'Sustainability Pioneer Award' include a broad spectrum of producers, including hospitality establishments, retailers and training schools including Hylsten Bakery (Buckfastleigh), The Husbandry School (Bickington), THE PIG-at Combe (Honiton), Springwater Farm (Broadclyst), Eversfield Organic (Bratton Clovelly) and The Black River Inn (Black Torrington) plus others, besides.

Sustainability Board Director at Food Drink Devon and Met Office Climate Service Lead in Food, Farming & Natural Environment, Dr Pete Falloon, remarked on the entries; “The judging panel were thrilled with the number of very high quality entries for the 'Sustainability Pioneer Award', there were some truly inspirational entries. 

"It's been especially encouraging to see how Devon businesses are acting as a force for good and embracing all three dimensions of sustainability - planet, people and profit - to ensure a greener world, to support thriving communities and workforces and drive their businesses forward. We can't wait to unveil the winners and tell you a bit more about their stories at the awards' ceremony!”

Shortlisted businesses in the 'Product Awards' cover a massive variety of delights including sweet and savoury, meat, preserves, jams and chutneys, ales, ciders, wines and confectionery, plus a host of others. 

Finalists are also automatically in the running for 'Food Product', 'Drink Product' and 'New Product of the Year'.  Some of this year's finalists include; Atlantic Spirit (Bideford), Beckland Charcuterie (Hartland), Clive's Purely Plants (Dartmouth), Ebb Tides Seaweeds (Sidmouth), Hattiers Rum (Mothecombe), Jamu Wild Water (Exeter), Lovaton Farm (Okehampton), Taw Valley Microgreens (Umberleigh), Cakewhole (Plymouth) Sandridge Barton Wines (Stoke Gabriel) and Truly Treats (Kingsteignton).

Food Drink Devon Board Director, Jack Pickering, commented: “The number, quality and range of products we received for judging this year was truly amazing. It's a very real testament to the hard work producers from across the county of Devon have invested to deliver delicious food and drink products from our fertile lands. This year will see us award a record number of Gold awards and more excitingly a record number of Platinum awards, too! But everyone will need to wait until the awards' ceremony to find out who they are!”

In the 'Retail Awards' entries have been whittled down for the 'Best Retailer' and 'Best Online Retailer' ranging from top-end delicatessens to village stores.  

Finalists include Ashburton Delicatessen (Ashburton), Ben's Farm Shop (Staverton), Greendale Farm Shop (Exeter), Lyme Bay Winery Cellar Door (Axminster), Shaldon Village Store (Shaldon) and Veyseys Butchers (Cullompton).

The hospitality section of the awards sees establishments battling it out in five very fiercely contested categories such as 'Best Fine Dining Restaurant', 'Best Restaurant', 'Best Pub', 'Best Café' and 'Best Takeaway'.  

Shortlisted establishments in the fine dining restaurant, restaurant and pub categories include Bayards Cove Inn (Dartmouth), Harry's Restaurant (Exeter), Orestone Manor Hotel (Maidencombe), Salcombe Harbour Hotel (Salcombe), The Bucket & Spade (Shaldon), The Nightjar Inn (Aylesbeare), The Fig Tree @ 36 (Plymouth) and Winslade Manor Restaurant & Bar (Clyst St Mary) as well as others.  Finalists in the café and takeaway categories include Arc Kitchen and Coffee House (Exmouth), Sara's on the Beach (Paignton), Valley View Café (Loddiswell), The Original Pasty House (Plymouth and Tavistock) and Amelia's Pantry, Cofton Holidays (Starcross) and others.  

Covering food production, preparation, retailing, cooking and service, the Food Drink Devon Awards honour businesses that demonstrate a consistent commitment to quality, sustainability, provenance, excellent customer service and support for their local communities and other local businesses.  

Every year judging for the awards is undertaken by a special panel of independent, unbiased experts including a number of regional celebrity names.  All results and winners are verified by an independent adjudicator, with entrants receiving the opportunity to benefit from invaluable product feedback provided from the panel. 

Chair of Food Drink Devon, Greg Parsons, commented on the calibre of entries: “Being part of the judging panel for the Food Drink Devon awards is a real, genuine privilege. It presents us with an annual opportunity to assess the quality of food and drink in our glorious county.

Thousands Expected to Attend Taste East Devon Food Festival

Thousands of exited and eager foodies are expected to make their way to Devon to attend the Taste East Devon Food Festival this month.

East Devon is preparing for a bustling, vibrant month of September when thousands of visitors flock to to the district to join local foodies to attend a whole host of events during the Taste East Devon Food Festival (9th-24th September). 

Back for its exiting third year, the festival promises to showcase the very best that the area has on offer, with some exciting new additions and sold out events at River Cottage, Darts Farm, Coldharbour Field Kitchen and Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary.

Nearly Two-Thirds of People Aged 30-50 Could have Undiagnosed Blood Pressure warns top BP charity

A massive and worrying 63% of UK adults aged between 30–50 don't know their current blood pressure numbers and could be living daily with undiagnosed blood pressure, which  is increasing their chances of strokes, heart attacks and heart failure which, ironically, are amongst their most feared health conditions (i.e. heart attacks, 31% and stroke, 24%). 

That’s according to a NEW consumer poll by national charity, Blood Pressure UK to mark Know Your Numbers! Week (4-10th September).

With unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet contributing to more young people in their 30s, 40s and 50s being diagnosed with hypertension and around 1 in 3 people in the UK now living with high blood pressure, the charity urges adults of all ages to make the time to check their blood pressure, ideally with a home blood pressure monitor as it’s the easiest way to find out your blood pressure numbers. 

Since high blood pressure is largely without symptoms and the single biggest preventable cause of deaths in the UK, the more people test themselves, the more chance they'll have of controlling it and avoid unnecessary premature death, says Blood Pressure UK. Currently 6.5 million people in the UK remain undiagnosed.

Whilst age is one of many factors in rising blood pressure as our vascular system, which includes the heart and blood vessels, changes, it doesn't discriminate. 

That's why adults of ALL ages must Know Their Numbers. In fact, 72% of respondents agree blood pressure isn't only a concern for older people (i.e., those who are 50+).

Despite this and the high percentage of respondents who don't know their blood pressure numbers, 68% agree knowing their blood pressure numbers is vital, whilst two-thirds (66%) of those surveyed claim to understand that persistently high blood pressure can result in heart attacks.

Substantial evidence supporting the use of home blood pressure monitoring has shown it gives a better reflection of blood pressure, as being tested in somewhere like a GP surgery or pharmacy which can make patients feel anxious and can affect the result. 

Also, it allows patients to monitor their condition more easily over the longer term. According to NHS England, regular home blood pressure monitoring across a population of 50,000 patients could prevent up to 500 heart attacks and 745 strokes over five years.

Research studies also show eating too much salt can also be a major cause of high blood pressure, particularly the rise in blood pressure with age. As a nation, if we cut one gram of salt from our average daily salt intake, this would cause a fall in blood pressure and there would be approximately 6,000 fewer deaths from strokes and heart attacks each year in the UK.

Phil Pyatt, CEO of Blood Pressure UK said: “Given high blood pressure does not show any clear symptoms, hence being dubbed the ‘silent killer’ all adults, regardless of their age, need to take control of their health by checking their blood pressure regularly, either at home, at a pharmacy or at their GP. Furthermore, simple improvements in diet and lifestyle like eating less salt, more fruit and vegetables and doing more exercise can really help keep blood pressure down.”

Professor Graham MacGregor, Chairman of Blood Pressure UK says: “Half of all strokes and heart disease are due to high blood pressure which can easily be reduced, particularly by reducing your salt intake and if necessary, taking tablets which rarely have side effects. This will reduce your risk of developing a heart attack, heart failure or a stroke, which can either be fatal or cause life-changing disabilities. This is completely avoidable; it is not the time to dither and delay, it could save your life."

Here's how you never need throw any food away ever again!

If you can, you should never throw away any food, if you can save it.

We aren't talking about putting food into council food caddies (though that's also an option). What we are talking about is the concept of Smidgin Cookery.

Basically, this involves keeping all leftover foods and keeping it in the fridge, the pantry or the freezer and using the leftover foods in combinations to make Smidgen Roasts, Smidgen Pies, Smidgen Soups and Smidgen Deserts.

For example perhaps you have frozen in freezer bags or packs: several slices of beef, turkey or ham, a cup of cooked rice, some peas, carrots, beans, etc? These will make an excellent base for a very tasty soup.

You could have several half-finished packets of flour in your pantry. You can combine these together and make a pie, either a savoury pie or a dessert pie, using whatever else you have in the pantry, fridge or freezer.

Also, if you have several fishfingers, a couple of frozen or chilled burgers (meat or meat free) some chicken nuggets, several sausages, some leftover roast potatoes, a handful or two of frozen vegetables, you can make a smidgen roast, cooked at about 200c for 30 to 40 minutes and served with rice, mashed potatoes and vegetables plus some gravy or sauce.

Smidgen cooking is a variation on scratch cooking.

The word Smidgen means "a small amount" so smidgen cooking means adding together small amounts of leftover food and re-combining them in new, interesting ways.

I'm off now to enjoy a slice of Smidgen Pie, made with several smidgens of different types of flour and some sliced apples!

Tinnitus. Are there foods and supplements that can help?

I suffer from Tinnitus. Probably due to working in a noisy environment when I worked in a foundry as a laboratory/foundry technician back in the 1970s.

At present, there are no drug therapies available, but there are some foods and supplements that are pointed to as being of help to alleviate at least the symptoms of the condition.

One organisation claiming to offer support for people with tinnitus alleges that no foods, vitamins or supplements can help alleviate the symptoms of tinnitus saying "No research has been done to prove that this particular supplement, food or vitamin has any affect on tinnitus." 

Whilst that might be true, I think it's rather strange that the organisation hasn't actually decided to fund any research into these foods, vitamins or supplements by medical research teams. I'm sure hospitals with expertise on tinnitus and supplement or vitamin manufacturers would be more than willing to undertake such research.

Interestingly some qualified Medical Doctors do refer patients with tinnitus to a number of foods, vitamins and supplements which they say can help deal with tinnitus. They don't claim they will act as a cure, but they do point out that they can help alleviate the symptoms at least to an extent and in some people who suffer from tinnitus.

In his highly interesting and very readable blog Neil Sperling MD (who is a specialist in surgery for hearing restoration procedures) points to a number of foods, vitamins and supplements that can offer some relief for tinnitus sufferers:-

Potassium

Zinc

Folate

If you search Amazon you will find a variety of vitamins and supplements and patches that are claimed to be able to treat tinnitus. I am not providing any links to these as I haven't tried them yet so have no idea if they are effective. After I have my appointment with my tinnitus consultant I may well try some of those treatments in the future. 

Some vitamin and supplement providers do sell products that could help tinnitus sufferers so just Google them and see what comes up.

Co-op to serve-up new-look store in North Camp, Farnborough

Shoppers who live in the vicinity of North Camp, Farnborough who are keen on saving money in a co-operative sense will be pleased by the news that the Co-op is launching a new, improved co-operative convenience store next Monday, 4 September to serve the community of North Camp, Farnborough and the surrounding areas. 

This is after a month-long programme of works and improvements to bring about the improvements. 

The new-look store which is almost 2,800 sq ft in size, is located in Queens Road, North Camp and it will provide over 20 local jobs and will be open between 6am-11pm daily.

Asda announces 425 branded and own-label price cuts

Asda has  announced price reductions on 425 branded and own-label products. This is part of its continued support for families who are impacted by the continuing cost of living crisis.

It's investing £23m to reduce prices by an average of 11% on some of the most popular products bought by customers on a weekly basis. This includes nappies, infant follow on milk, bread, cheese, cereals, pasta, fish fingers, sausages and chicken breasts.

These reductions follow on a £13m investment last month to cut prices on over 200 own-label products by an average of 9%.

Asda is increasing support for its customers as its latest Income Tracker shows family budgets remain under pressure from rising living costs. Despite the CPI inflation rate easing last month, family disposable incomes remain much lower than before the cost-of-living crisis, down by over £100 per month for the average household compared against July 2021.

Kris Comerford, who is Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “While the headline inflation rate may have eased slightly last month, our own figures show us many customers continue to struggle with rising living costs. 

"So we've targeted this latest price investment on products our customers buy week-in and week-out, to help their shopping budgets stretch a bit further. We’re also continuing to work closely with our suppliers and whenever there's a chance to pass on commodity price savings to customers we'll do this.” 

The price reductions are already effective in all stores that stock those products and online.

Asda's also continuing to offer support to families by extending its hugely popular ‘Kids Eat for £1’ café meal offer for the rest of this year. Since launching this initiative in July 2022, Asda has served 2m meals from its cafes and invested £1.3m to keep the meal prices pegged at £1.

Shopping at Aldi? Here are their August Bank Holiday opening hours

Aldi has announced its opening times for the August Bank Holiday.

Aldi's branches will open as normal Saturdays and Sunday. But stores will be open in England and Wales from 8am until 8pm on Monday 28th August, but opening hours in Scotland will remain unchanged (8am – 10pm).

However, customers are advised that the opening times of some stores could vary, and they're advised to  visit Aldi’s website to check their local store's opening times.

Aldi report that they have everything shoppers will need for a stunning Bank Holiday, due to its fabulous range of delicious food and drink.

From BBQs and picnics to garden gatherings and soirees, shoppers will be able to can cater for any long weekend plans with Aldi's stupendous range of fresh meat, vegetarian and vegan options, sides, snacks, sweet treats and drinks, all at amazing Aldi prices, too!

And Click and Collect is also available to customers at some 200 Aldi stores. Customers at select stores can visit groceries.aldi.co.uk to browse the supermarket’s range online and book a timeslot for collection, where all of their shopping will be brought to their cars and loaded into their boots by Aldi colleagues.

Amazon Grocery shopping 12 years later

Back in April 2011 That's News and Drink carried the following item about Amazon: "Amazon now sells food and drink."

This is the blog post we carried twelve years ago:

"In an exciting new development, the world's most favourite online bookshop, Amazon, have started selling groceries online, too!

But not just any groceries! Visiting the groceries section of the website is pretty much like making a trip across the Atlantic and finding yourself in an American grocery store!

Because Amazon has started selling hundreds of lines that are common (and one or two that are not that common!) in American food stores!

Just some of the lines available are Pop Tarts, Root Beer, American peanut butter, Reeses' Peanut Butter Cups, Fluff, American breakfast cereals, including Lucky Charms, Pop Tarts, Cliff Bars, etc., etc.

"This is great!" said one American. I am stationed in the UK for several months and although British food is OK, we were missing some of the staples of the American grocery store. Now we can buy them in the UK, too!"

But it's not just 'American' foods that are available. Amazon also sells foods for special diets such as gluten free or foods suitable for Coeliacs or vegetarians and some foods from other countries are featured, including South Africa. Plus more snacks and candy than you knew existed!

Amazon also sells a truly stunning range of beers, wines and spirits from around the world."

We have ordered grocery items from Amazon over the years including gin liqueurs, some Scotch, speciality foodstuffs, etc. Also special treats for our parrot!

Over the years the range of available grocery items has rapidly grown and expanded, including organic vegetables, etc.

Whilst some might argue that Amazon doing this is 'wrong' and that it harms local businesses, in many parts of the UK the items that Amazon's grocery department stocks just aren't available locally, if at all.

For example, if you want to try bottles of wine from India good luck trying your nearest "posh" wine merchant! Ours "hasn't heard of Indian wines" (said in a sniffy, condescending tone) and declined to even consider the concept of bothering to find out about their availability. Oh, well. Their loss!

Because a quick search on Amazon brought up the Sula Indian Vineyard's Dindori Reserve Shiraz, 75 cl, which, at £12.33 a bottle, is a reasonable price.

Speciality Food & Drink Show Date Announced for Glasgow

You'll be able to re-stock your food and drink shelves with new brands and innovative ranges which will be on show at the Speciality Food & Drink Show from 21-23 Jan 2024 at the SEC, Glasgow. 

Operated in conjunction with Scotland's Trade Show this is the principal buying arena for fine food and drink in Scotland.

Entrepreneurship is alive and well in the Scottish food and drink industry, with the Show's Launch Gallery for new, young companies nearly at capacity. 

With a wide range of products from dips to oat milk, coffee to hemp, this central zone features companies like Pochle (Incholm Distilling), MYXD Scottish Cocktails, Little Birdie Coffee, Three Robins oat milk and the D!P club among the many launch exhibitors.

With many of the producers doing both food and drink, the Show's updated its name to reflect this. This is expected to attract even more innovative drinks producers from soft drinks through to spirits.

As the only fine food trade show in Scotland during 2024, this will be a key location for farm shops, delis, tourist shops, cafes, restaurants and fine food shops to seek out new products and taste and re-connect with existing suppliers.

Overseas visitors have been in short supply during the last few years but with a weak Pound and all areas open to travel again, hospitality venues and tourist outlets across Scotland are seeing tourists return in their droves. Many are having to re-stock regularly, and this bodes very well for suppliers and the Speciality Food & Drink Show.

Food Rebels: Taste the Rebellion!

Introducing Food Rebels, which is a new podcast and radio programmed solely dedicated to celebrating food challenger brands, food founders, and spotlighting personalities who dare to do things differently.  

The exciting 30-minute show, which launches with a listenership of over 30,000 thanks to its radio partners, will be jam-packed with intriguing interviews and thought-provoking debates from the exciting world of challenger brands. 

Who hosts Food Rebels? Food Rebels is hosted by AJ Sharp, former co-host and presenter of The FoodTalk Show.
