Speaking about the awards Food Lifestyle magazine editor, Jo Rees, said: 'This year's Awards were a veritable who's who of the outstanding businesses from Cornwall to the Cotswolds and showcase just how sophisticated the South West has become.

'This region rivals any in the UK for cool places to stay, eat, visit and shop but has its own particular flavour that everyone who has experienced it will recognise.

"We host the awards each year to honour the community of independent businesses, suppliers, growers, makers and creatives and everyone who relies on those industries.'

The celebratory supper and awards ceremony at Nancarrow featured a feast cooked by the Nancarrow team led by head chef Jack Bristow. It included dishes such as ricotta ravioli with heritage tomato, lovage and Old Winchester, and grilled hispi cabbage with lamb-fat crumb, Cornish seaweed and shallot. Wines were supplied by Ellis Wines, aperitifs were provided by Thatchers and Trevethan Distillery, and the meal ended with speciality caffeination from Yallah Coffee.

The Food Lifestyle Awards 2024 were supported by Bramley, Churchill, Darts Farm, Ellis Wines, Knightor Winery, South West 660, Thatchers, Trevethan Distillery and Trewithen Dairy.

Taste of the West Country: Delicious Recipes to Try at Home

The West Country, known for its stunning landscapes and rich culinary heritage, offers a treasure trove of delicious recipes that capture the essence of this beautiful region.

From hearty pasties to creamy scones, the flavours of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and Dorset are sure to delight.

Here are some traditional recipes that you can easily recreate at home.

1. Cornish Pasty

A true icon of Cornish cuisine, the Cornish pasty is a savoury pastry filled with meat and vegetables. Traditionally, it was a portable meal for miners and farmers.

Ingredients:

500g shortcrust pastry

350g beef skirt, diced

1 large potato, peeled and diced

1 onion, finely chopped

1 small swede (rutabaga), peeled and diced

Salt and pepper to taste

1 egg, beaten (for glazing)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan, gas mark 6).

Roll out the pastry and cut into four 20cm circles.

In a bowl, mix the beef, potato, onion, and swede. Season well with salt and pepper.

Divide the mixture evenly among the pastry circles, placing it on one side of each circle.

Fold the pastry over to create a semi-circle and crimp the edges to seal.

Place the pasties on a baking tray and brush with beaten egg.

Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown. Serve hot or cold.

2. Devonshire Cream Tea

A quintessential Devonshire treat, the cream tea features freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and jam.

Ingredients for Scones:

225g self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

50g butter, cold and cubed

25g caster sugar

150ml milk

1 egg, beaten (for glazing)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan, gas mark 7). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

In a bowl, mix the flour and baking powder. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Stir in the sugar, then gradually add the milk to form a soft dough.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead. Roll out to a thickness of 2cm and cut into rounds with a 5cm cutter.

Place the scones on the baking tray, brush with beaten egg, and bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden.

Serve warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

3. Somerset Cider Chicken

Somerset is renowned for its cider, and this dish beautifully combines the local beverage with tender chicken.

Ingredients:

4 chicken breasts

2 tbsp plain flour

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

250ml dry Somerset cider

250ml chicken stock

100ml double cream

Fresh thyme sprigs

Instructions:

Season the flour with salt and pepper, then coat the chicken breasts.

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Brown the chicken breasts on both sides, then remove and set aside.

In the same pan, sauté the onion and garlic until softened.

Pour in the cider and stock, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Return the chicken to the pan, add the thyme, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.

Stir in the double cream and heat gently for a few minutes. Serve with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.

4. Dorset Apple Cake

This classic Dorset dessert is perfect for showcasing the region's apples.

Ingredients:

225g self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp ground cinnamon

115g unsalted butter, cold and cubed

115g light brown sugar

2 large eggs, beaten

3 tbsp milk

225g cooking apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

1 tbsp demerara sugar

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan, gas mark 4). Grease and line a 20cm round cake tin.

In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Stir in the brown sugar, followed by the eggs and milk to form a thick batter.

Fold in the chopped apples and transfer the mixture to the prepared tin. Sprinkle with demerara sugar.

Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or cold, with a dollop of cream or custard.

Massively Popular England's Seafood FEAST 2023 Sells Out and Announces Dates for 2024

The beginning of autumn saw the UK's most popular holiday destination, the English Riviera, welcome thousands of visitors for its annual England's Seafood FEAST, which celebrates locally landed and caught seafood during a fortnight of exclusive experiences, special events and seafood menus.

The two week FEAST took place from 29th September until 15th October and saw the towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham join forces to host a seafood feast like no other before. It was a fantastic opportunity for visitors to join the locals and experience some of the best seafood in the world, right where it's landed.

The FEAST started with a bang at Brixham Fish Market with an exhilarating live broadcast by BBC Radio Devon on Friday 29th September and an amazing featured piece on BBC Spotlight on Monday 2nd October 2023. Throughout both broadcasts, presenters John Acres and John Ayres engaged with the Faces of the FEAST, from dedicated fishers to market managers, painting a vivid picture of the vibrant maritime community.

Special mentions go to Helen Lovell-Smith from the Fishermen's Mission, Barry Young of Brixham Trawler Agents, Mitch Tonks of Rockfish and program coordinator Kelly Widley, whose dedication set the stage for an unforgettable FEAST.

All of the exclusive experiences sold out including the legendary '7 Chefs from England's Seafood Coast' in both Torquay and Brixham, 'Meet the Maker' with Simon Hulstone of The Elephant and Frazer Pugh of The Hand Picked Scallop Company, an Exclusive Celebration Seafood Supper at Sandridge Barton, a Sea Swim and Seafood with author Matt Newbury at Cantina and 'Seabirds and Seafood' Guided Walk and Breakfast with local bird expert Mike Langman at Guardhouse Cafe on Berry Head.

Goodrington's SEAFEST was also a resounding success, featuring a medley of arts, performances, and interactive sessions that underscored the beauty and importance of the coastline, and the fun didn't stop there.

Over 40 independent eateries took part in England's Seafood FEAST including Mitch Tonks' Rockfish who served a special of local mussels throughout and Hampton by Hilton Torquay, who hosted an Afternoon Tea with local artist Becky Bettesworth.

A five course seafood taster menu was served at The Thatched Tavern, which welcomed Dartmouth-based explorer, marine biologist, and broadcaster Monty Halls for a talk and Paignton's Shoreline invited local paddle boarding nine time world record holder Brendon Prince to talk after a three course seafood sharing feast.

Carolyn Custerson, CEO of the English Riviera BID Company, said: “A huge thanks goes out to everyone involved with England's Seafood FEAST, which has gone from strength-to-strength every year. Our local fishers, chefs and independent eateries have done a fantastic job of showcasing the local fish and shellfish. As an organisation, we are very proud to represent these local individuals, businesses and eateries.

"I'm thrilled to announce that this year has been so popular that we have already confirmed dates for next year with some new exciting events in the early planning stages.. England's Seafood FEAST will return to the English Riviera from 27th September - 13th October 2024. Save the dates!”

A New Dawn for Fine Dining. The Trencherman's Guide Heralds a New, Wonderful Era for Hospitality

At the recent launch of the 31st edition of the Trencherman's Guide, the South West's original dining guide, Michael Caines MBE, chair of the Trencherman's committee, stated: "Many have declared a new dawn for fine dining in this post-Covid world and this 31st edition of the Trencherman's Guide proves it.

"In the South West and across the rest of the UK, the dining scene is evolving; there's no question about it,' says Michael, a leading light on the South West food scene who owns Michelin-starred Lympstone Manor in Devon, The Cove at Maenporth in Cornwall, and Mickeys Beach in Exmouth. 'Browse the pages of the Trencherman's Guide edition 31 and you'll find, more than ever before, the diverse ways that chefs and restaurateurs are extending their core business to incorporate a variety of dining experiences that don't compromise on quality.

"From wood-fired pizzas served on hotel terraces to family-friendly beach bars and fish shacks in pub gardens, authentic South West dining experiences are now reaching out to an even greater audience, which is fantastic for everyone, including the region's food and drink producers.

"The ceremony of multi-course meals and starched linen still holds huge appeal to those chasing a real sense of occasion, but it's now time to expand our perspective on the definition of the most exquisite dining experiences."

The annual epicurean bible for the region launched its latest edition on Monday September 25 at Ugly Butterfly by Adam Handling in Carbis Bay with a champagne reception and exquisite four-course lunch.

This year's guide, covering the entire South West region from Land's End to the furthest reaches of Dorset and the Cotswolds, features 106 restaurants that have surpassed the strict Trencherman's entry criteria. This year's members range from formal restaurants to dining pubs, bistros and even bottle shops.

At the helm of the guide is new editor Abi Manning, who describes it as "a true celebration of the best places to eat in the South West, in their many guises. The concept of fine dining isn't dead, but there's certainly a movement towards a more casual restaurant experience, as shown in our guide.

"This is the direction the industry is now taking, as a result of food and energy prices putting pressure on restaurants, as well as the cost-of-living crisis for consumers. But quality is still the key and we believe a casual meal using hyper-local ingredients cooked extremely well is equally as valid as a multi-course tasting menu."

Abi points to the 25 new additions to the guide, saying: "It's evidence of the talent that continues to flourish in this food-rich corner of the UK."

She went on to say: "The guide, and the independent dining scene, is moving into an exciting new era. We're incredibly lucky we have such an abundance of incredible chefs who are paving the way, and along with their teams are finding innovative methods to use the rich produce of our land and sea to create memorable dining experiences."

The guide launched in style at the event in north Cornwall, attended by Trencherman's members and guide partners Dole, The Eco Laundry, PKF Francis Clark, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, Navas Drinks and Trevethan Cornish Craft Distillery. Event suppliers included Yallah Coffee, Matthew Stevens Cornish Fish, Philip Warren Butchers and Otter Valley Farms.

A special and very sumptuous four-course banquet was created by four chefs who appear among its pages: Ugly Butterfly chef-patron Adam Handling (and this year's Champion of Champions on Great British Menu), Guy Owen of The St Enodoc Hotel in Cornwall, Harriet Mansell of Robin Wylde in Dorset and Nicholas Balfe of HOLM in Somerset. Each chef sought to highlight the bountiful produce of the South West, with ingredients including Somerset lamb, Cornish duck, Dorset dandelion root and Cornish seaberry.
