Keen’s Cheddar wins public vote to claim People’s Cheese 2024 title
During the live online final, broadcast on Friday 11 October, cheese lovers from all over the UK tuned in with their cheese boxes to taste, deliberate and cast their votes, before the traditional unpasteurised cheddar took the top prize.
This latest accolade for the Keen family reflects the enduring popularity of traditional artisan cheddar cheeses, coming over 127 years after production began at Moorhayes Farm in 1899.
Five generations later, under the stewardship of George Keen, the family is still making cheese with raw milk from their 250-strong herd of Friesian cows, with Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar matured for 18 months to achieve a moist texture and full-bodied flavour, with onion notes and plenty of delicious tang.
Organised by The Real Cheese Project, People’s Cheese 2024 was created to get more people eating and talking about Britain’s artisan cheese, with this year’s ‘Heritage Edition’ focusing on territorial styles.
All named after the locations that they originated in, this group of traditional cheeses includes Cheddar, Stilton, Red Leicester, Caerphilly, Cheshire, Double Gloucester, Lancashire, and Wensleydale, with Dunlop also featured as a Scottish heritage cheese.
Rounds 1 and 2 took place at Chiswick Cheese Market, beginning with over 40 entrants into the nine categories. Hundreds of marketgoers took part and voted for their favourites during these early rounds, ultimately selecting the four finalists; Blue Stilton by Cropwell Bishop Creamery in Nottinghamshire; Extra Mature Cheddar by Keen’s Cheddar in Somerset; Mrs Bourne’s Cheshire Cheese by Bourne's Cheshire Cheese in Cheshire; and Thelma’s Original Caerffili by Caws Cenarth in Carmarthenshire.
Friday’s virtual final was broadcast from Mrs Kirkham's Cheese in Lancashire, and presented by comedian and champion of British cheese, Marcus Brigstocke, alongside The Real Cheese Project co-founder, James Grant.
The pair were joined by experts including Jane Quicke from Quicke’s, Lucy Cufflin from Chiswick Cheese Market, Jonathan Pearcey from The Crafty Cheese Man, and Graham Kirkham from Mrs Kirkham’s Cheese, who guided the virtual voting panel through their tasting boxes, before everyone was invited to vote for this year’s People’s Cheese champion.
In September, The Real Cheese Project also launched a special monthly subscription box, created to big up Britain’s artisan cheese community and get more people buying the good stuff. Inviting the curd curious to embark on a real cheese adventure, each Cheese Crowd box will come with a new cheese to try, a monthly cheese zine, a hand-picked pairing, a pin badge for new subscribers, and access to an online tasting to meet the cheesemaker.
5% of all profits will go into a Real Cheese support fund, which will be donated to initiatives that protect, develop and progress real cheese in the UK.

The battle to find the UK’s master burrito maker reaches the finals tomorrow
This summer, Tortilla, the UK’s most loved Mexican restaurant, embarked on the search to find the Ultimate Burrito Master.
After months of fierce heats across the country, the final showdown will be hosted at Tortilla’s Leadenhall restaurant, with six finalists battling it out for the prestigious title of Burrito Master 2024.
These culinary champions have chopped, grilled, and wrapped their way to the top, and now they’re ready to prove they’ve got what it takes to claim that prestigious burrito crown.
With the competition finale just around the corner the stage is set for an unforgettable event in London as the UK’s top burrito makers.
Each finalist represents the best of the best that Tortilla offers from across the UK from Manchester, Lincoln, Stratford, Cardiff, Richmond, and Dalston.
With their unique flair and skills, they’ll face a series of challenges, all designed to test their expertise and creativity in crafting the perfect burrito.
In the first round, the contestants will showcase their ability to build and wrap the perfect burrito—turning it upside down to demonstrate flawless technique.
The heat will be turned up in the second round when the finalists create their ultimate taco, a blind round where the judges will step away, leaving presentation and portioning as key factors in scoring.
The third challenge requires them to design a picture-perfect burrito bowl, built to Tortilla’s high standards.
Finally, the contestants will let their imaginations run wild in the last round, where they’ll create their own signature dish, highlighting their personality, passion, and culinary knowledge.
Then one talented finalist will be crowned Tortilla’s Burrito Master of 2024 and rewarded with a fantastic array of prizes, including £1,000 in travel vouchers, exclusive Burrito Master merchandise, and Just Eat takeaway vouchers.
Judging the event will be a panel of experts, including Tortilla’s CEO Andy Naylor, Food Director James Garland, and Head of Brand Standards & Compliance Kristal May.
This highly anticipated competition is supported by a number of Tortilla’s valued partners, including Just Eat Takeaway, Fresh Direct, Beavertown, and more, ensuring the event is a true celebration of flavour and creativity.
CEO Andy Naylor said: “This summer we’ve been on the hunt for the ultimate Tortilla Burrito Master, it’s been fantastic to see all our teams get so involved and showcase their skill and craft in making our famous burritos.”
Tortilla Mexican Grill recently launched its first-ever app, introducing a new loyalty programme called The Burrito Society. This app brings together fans of Tortilla, offering rewards for loyalty and surprise perks that drop into the app for its most dedicated burrito lovers.
Founded in 2007, Tortilla has grown to become the largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant brand in Europe, with over 80 locations across the UK, more than 30 in France, and eight in the Middle East.
The brand serves over 7 million meals annually, known for its freshly made-to-order burritos, tacos, and salads, all crafted with high-quality ingredients. Tortilla’s menu is fully customisable, offering a variety of plant-based, vegan-friendly, and sustainably sourced options, while the business remains committed to using 100% recyclable packaging and renewable energy, sending zero waste to landfill.

Why Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals Are a Boon for Real Ale Enthusiasts and Small Brewers Alike
These biannual events have become a highlight in the calendar for real ale enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to explore an incredible range of ales from both well-established and up-and-coming breweries.
However, the festivals aren’t just a treat for beer lovers—they’re a vital platform for small and regional brewers, providing exposure, support, and opportunities to showcase their craft to a national audience.
Let’s dive into why these festivals are such a significant boon to both real ale fans and the brewing industry.
1. A Real Ale Paradise for Enthusiasts
At the heart of every Wetherspoon Real Ale Festival is the promise of variety. With up to 20 different ales on offer, including many limited-edition brews, these festivals provide a treasure trove of flavours, styles, and regional specialties. For real ale enthusiasts, it’s a chance to expand their palate and discover new favourites from across the UK and beyond.
Unrivalled Variety
Wetherspoon’s commitment to showcasing a diverse range of ales means that attendees can enjoy everything from classic bitters and golden ales to more experimental styles, such as fruit-infused beers or smoky porters. For those passionate about supporting British brewing traditions, this festival is the perfect opportunity to indulge in cask ales made using traditional methods, often by smaller breweries that may not always be available on the high street.
Affordable Prices
One of the major appeals of the Wetherspoon festivals is their accessibility. Real ale can sometimes be perceived as a niche or premium product, but Wetherspoon helps to break down those barriers by offering festival ales at their standard, affordable prices. This means that even those who are new to real ale can sample high-quality brews without the fear of breaking the bank.
2. A Lifeline for Small and Regional Brewers
While the Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals are a treat for drinkers, they are equally important for the brewers who participate. For many small and regional breweries, securing a spot in the festival can be a game-changer. Wetherspoon has over 800 pubs across the UK, providing brewers with an extensive platform to reach a national audience that would be difficult to access otherwise.
Exposure to New Markets
For small breweries, getting their beer into the hands of new customers can be a challenge, especially in an industry dominated by larger brands. The Wetherspoon festival allows these brewers to showcase their craft to thousands of drinkers, some of whom may not have had the chance to try their products before. This exposure can lead to increased brand recognition, new business opportunities, and a loyal following beyond their local area.
Championing Regional Specialties
Wetherspoon’s commitment to sourcing beers from small and regional brewers means that the festival often highlights local ingredients and brewing techniques unique to specific parts of the country. Whether it’s a traditional Yorkshire bitter, a Cornish pale ale, or a Scottish stout, these festivals celebrate the diversity of the British brewing scene and provide a much-needed platform for regional producers to shine.
Supporting Independent Brewers
In an era where larger brewing companies are often able to dominate distribution and marketing, Wetherspoon’s support for independent brewers helps to level the playing field. By including ales from smaller producers in their festivals, Wetherspoon ensures that these brewers get the attention they deserve, providing them with valuable sales and raising awareness of their brands across the UK.
3. International Collaboration
Another exciting aspect of the Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals is their commitment to international collaboration. Each festival typically features a selection of ales from international brewers, often brewed in the UK in collaboration with local breweries. This not only provides festival-goers with a taste of the global beer scene but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and knowledge-sharing among brewers from different cultures.
For real ale enthusiasts, this international element adds an extra layer of interest, offering a rare chance to sample international styles brewed right here in the UK. For brewers, it’s an opportunity to experiment, learn from their peers, and reach a wider audience.
4. Sustaining the Cask Ale Tradition
Cask ale is an integral part of Britain’s brewing heritage, and Wetherspoon’s festivals play a crucial role in sustaining that tradition. Unlike mass-produced beers, cask ale is brewed using time-honoured techniques, resulting in a fresher, more complex product that requires care and attention at every stage of production. By featuring cask ales at their festivals, Wetherspoon encourages more people to appreciate this unique aspect of British beer culture, ensuring its continued relevance in the modern marketplace.
5. Educational Experience
For both newcomers and seasoned real ale enthusiasts, the Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals also serve as an educational experience. The detailed tasting notes provided in the festival guides help drinkers understand the different flavours, aromas, and brewing techniques that make each ale unique. This emphasis on education encourages more thoughtful drinking and can inspire a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship behind each pint.
Conclusion: A Win-Win for Drinkers and Brewers
The Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals are a win-win for everyone involved. For real ale enthusiasts, these festivals offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore a wide range of ales, all at affordable prices. For small and regional brewers, they provide a valuable platform to gain national exposure, boost sales, and share their craft with a wider audience.
In a world where the beer industry is often dominated by large, commercial brands, Wetherspoon’s commitment to supporting independent brewers and showcasing the diversity of real ale is something to be celebrated. Whether you’re a seasoned real ale aficionado or just curious to explore what’s out there, the Wetherspoon Real Ale Festivals are a must-attend event that brings people together in the shared appreciation of great beer.
So this autumn or spring, why not head to your local Wetherspoon and raise a glass to real ale? You might just discover your new favourite pint!

How to Eat Healthy This Christmas: Tips for a Balanced Festive Season
While enjoying the holiday season is important, it’s also possible to strike a balance and stay on track with healthy eating.
Here’s how you can enjoy the festive period while keeping your health in mind.
1. Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast
It’s tempting to skip breakfast on Christmas Day or the days leading up to it, especially when a big lunch or dinner is on the horizon. However, having a nutritious breakfast can set the tone for the rest of the day. Opt for something light but filling, like:
Porridge with fresh berries and nuts
Wholegrain toast with avocado
A smoothie packed with vegetables, fruits, and some protein (like yoghurt or protein powder)
Starting with a balanced meal will prevent you from overindulging later and keep your energy levels stable.
2. Keep Portions in Check
With so many delicious dishes on offer, it’s easy to overeat. One of the best ways to maintain balance is to manage portion sizes. Instead of filling your plate to the brim, opt for smaller servings of your favourite foods. This way, you can enjoy a variety of dishes without overeating. If you’re still hungry, wait 10-15 minutes before deciding whether you really need a second helping.
3. Load Up on Veggies
Christmas dinner usually includes a variety of vegetables, from Brussels sprouts to carrots and parsnips. Make these the stars of your plate! Vegetables are packed with nutrients and fibre, helping you feel full and satisfied without adding too many calories. Try roasting them with herbs and a drizzle of olive oil for extra flavour without excessive fat.
4. Be Mindful of Your Alcohol Intake
Alcohol is a big part of Christmas celebrations, but it can also contribute significantly to excess calorie intake. A glass of wine, beer, or festive cocktails can quickly add up. Try to pace yourself by alternating between alcoholic drinks and water, or choose lower-calorie options like light beer or wine spritzers. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will also help you stay hydrated and avoid overeating.
5. Don’t Forget Protein
Protein is essential for keeping you full and preventing cravings for sugary treats. Whether it’s turkey, fish, or a plant-based option, make sure you have a good source of protein on your plate. This will help you maintain energy levels and avoid the mid-afternoon slump that often leads to overeating snacks.
6. Snack Wisely
Christmas gatherings often involve plenty of nibbles, from cheese boards to mince pies. While it’s fine to indulge a little, be mindful of how often you’re reaching for snacks. If you do feel peckish, opt for healthier choices like nuts, fresh fruit, or wholegrain crackers with hummus. Keeping healthy snacks on hand can prevent you from overindulging in high-calorie, sugary treats.
7. Choose Desserts Carefully
Christmas puddings, cakes, and chocolates are everywhere during the festive season. Rather than depriving yourself, choose your indulgences wisely. If you’re offered multiple desserts, decide which one you’d enjoy the most and stick to a small portion. You could also try healthier alternatives, like fruit-based desserts or those made with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.
8. Stay Active
It’s easy to overlook physical activity when you're enjoying festive downtime, but staying active can help you feel energised and maintain a healthy balance. Whether it’s a family walk after Christmas lunch, some gentle yoga, or even a festive dance, try to incorporate some movement into your day. Exercise will help you manage stress, improve digestion, and prevent that sluggish post-meal feeling.
9. Don’t Skip Meals
Some people skip meals in anticipation of a big Christmas feast, but this can lead to overeating when the time comes. Instead, aim to eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day. Eating consistently will help keep your blood sugar levels stable and prevent you from becoming overly hungry, which can lead to bingeing.
10. Listen to Your Body
It can be hard to resist the constant temptation of food over Christmas, but try to listen to your body. Eat when you’re hungry, and stop when you’re full. The holidays are a time for enjoyment, but that doesn’t mean you need to eat to the point of discomfort. Slowing down and savouring each bite can help you enjoy your meal more and give your body time to signal when it’s satisfied.
11. Get Creative with Leftovers
Christmas leftovers are part of the tradition, but instead of diving into cold roast dinners and sugary treats for days on end, get creative with how you use them. You can turn leftover turkey or vegetables into hearty, healthy soups, stir-fries, or salads. Incorporating fresh ingredients into your leftovers will keep meals balanced and nutritious.
Final Thoughts
Christmas is a time to celebrate, and that includes enjoying delicious food. By being mindful of portion sizes, loading up on veggies, and choosing your indulgences wisely, you can have a balanced and healthy festive season. Remember, it’s not about depriving yourself but about making thoughtful choices that allow you to feel your best during the holidays.
So, this Christmas, enjoy the festivities, savour your favourite treats, and stay healthy without missing out on the fun!

Alternative Main Features to Turkey for Christmas Dinner
However, as delicious as it can be, turkey isn’t to everyone’s taste or it may simply be time to try something new.
If you’re thinking of shaking up your festive feast this year, there are a variety of alternative main features that can be just as special, flavourful, and festive. Here are some fantastic substitutes to consider for your Christmas table.
1. Roast Beef
A classic choice for any special occasion, roast beef can bring a hearty and rich flavour to your Christmas dinner. Opt for a prime rib or a tender fillet, seasoned with garlic, rosemary, and thyme for a truly luxurious dish. The robust flavours pair perfectly with traditional sides like roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and a rich red wine gravy. Beef offers a comforting yet indulgent alternative that will certainly impress your guests.
2. Glazed Ham
A succulent glazed ham is another fantastic substitute for turkey. Ham is easy to prepare, and the sweet glaze – often made with honey, brown sugar, or maple syrup – provides a delightful contrast to the salty, savoury meat. You can serve it hot or cold, making it a versatile option for both formal and casual gatherings. The leftovers are ideal for sandwiches or adding to a Boxing Day buffet!
3. Goose
Historically, goose was a popular choice for Christmas before turkey took over as the dominant bird on the table. With its rich, full flavour and crisp, golden skin, roast goose is an indulgent centrepiece that feels celebratory. While it’s fattier than turkey, this makes it incredibly moist and flavourful. Goose fat can also be saved and used to make the most amazing roast potatoes!
4. Lamb
For those who prefer a more tender and succulent meat, roast lamb could be the perfect choice. The rich, earthy flavours of lamb, especially when paired with herbs like rosemary and mint, provide a delicious contrast to the lighter taste of turkey. A leg of lamb or a slow-roasted shoulder can be the star of the table, served with roasted vegetables, mint sauce, and perhaps a Mediterranean twist like roasted garlic and lemon.
5. Vegetarian Wellington
For vegetarians, or those looking to reduce their meat intake, a vegetarian Wellington makes a stunning and satisfying centrepiece. This dish typically involves a flaky puff pastry encasing a filling of mushrooms, nuts, lentils, or even butternut squash, seasoned with festive herbs. It’s a showstopper of a dish, with layers of texture and flavour, and pairs beautifully with all the usual Christmas sides like Brussels sprouts, parsnips, and roast potatoes.
6. Salmon en Croute
For a lighter but still luxurious alternative, salmon en croute is an elegant dish to serve at Christmas. The salmon, wrapped in buttery puff pastry along with spinach or a creamy dill sauce, makes for a sophisticated and delicious main. It's a particularly good option for those who may prefer seafood, and it offers a lovely contrast to the heavier, meatier choices. Pair it with new potatoes, roasted vegetables, and a crisp white wine for a refreshing festive meal.
7. Nut Roast
For a truly plant-based option, the nut roast has long been a staple of vegetarian and vegan Christmas dinners. Far from being bland or dry, modern recipes for nut roasts incorporate a wide variety of flavours and textures, including chestnuts, walnuts, mushrooms, lentils, and herbs.
With the right seasoning, it can be an incredibly tasty alternative to a meat dish. Serve with vegan gravy, cranberry sauce, and all the usual Christmas trimmings.
8. Duck
Duck is another richly flavoured bird that can serve as a delightful alternative to turkey. Its dark, tender meat, combined with crispy skin, offers a more intense and luxurious taste. Whether you opt for a whole roast duck or duck breasts, it pairs beautifully with festive sauces like orange or cherry, and can be served with sides such as red cabbage, roasted carrots, and creamy mash.
9. Stuffed Squash
For those seeking a more unique vegetarian option, roasted stuffed squash makes for a visually striking and hearty main course. You can fill the squash with a mixture of grains, nuts, dried fruits, and herbs, then roast it until tender and caramelised. The combination of the naturally sweet squash and savoury stuffing creates a delicious balance of flavours that even meat-eaters will love.
10. Pork Loin
A roast pork loin, especially when stuffed with herbs, garlic, or even apples, can be a fantastic option for Christmas dinner. The crackling adds a delightful crunch, while the tender meat offers a satisfying alternative to turkey. Serve it with roasted root vegetables, apple sauce, and perhaps a sage and onion stuffing to keep the meal festive.
Choosing an alternative to turkey doesn’t mean compromising on tradition or flavour. Whether you opt for a rich roast beef, a succulent ham, or a creative vegetarian Wellington, there’s an abundance of options to suit every taste and preference.
With a bit of creativity, your Christmas dinner can be just as special and memorable, giving you the perfect opportunity to try something new while still enjoying all the festive joy of a Christmas feast.
This year, why not break from tradition and surprise your guests with a new star of the show?
Celebrating National Curry Week in the UK: A Flavourful Tribute to a Nation’s Favourite
From the iconic chicken tikka masala to the fiery vindaloo, curry has woven itself into the culinary fabric of the UK, representing a blend of cultures and tastes.
A Brief History of Curry in the UK
While curry has roots in South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, it was introduced to the UK during the days of the British Empire.
Indian spices and flavours were brought back by British merchants, and soon, curry houses began to spring up in British cities. In fact, the first curry house opened in London in 1810 by a Bengali entrepreneur. Since then, curry has evolved and adapted to British palates, creating unique dishes that are now considered quintessentially British, such as chicken tikka masala, which is often hailed as Britain’s national dish.
Why Celebrate National Curry Week?
National Curry Week, first established in 1998, isn’t just about indulging in your favourite dishes (though that’s certainly encouraged!). It’s about celebrating the cultural diversity that curry represents and recognising the contribution of South Asian communities to British society. Curry has long been a symbol of cultural exchange, bringing people together over shared meals and expanding our appreciation for different flavours and traditions.
How to Celebrate
Visit Your Local Curry House
One of the best ways to celebrate National Curry Week is by supporting your local curry house or Indian restaurant. The UK is home to thousands of Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani restaurants, many of which are family-run businesses. Whether you love a creamy korma or prefer the heat of a madras, enjoying a meal at one of these establishments not only celebrates curry but also supports local communities.
Cook Your Own Curry
If you prefer to celebrate at home, why not try your hand at making your own curry? There’s something truly rewarding about creating your own spice mix and watching your dish come together. You can find plenty of recipes online, ranging from mild curries for beginners to more complex dishes for those feeling adventurous. Get the family involved for a fun cooking session!
Try a New Dish
National Curry Week is the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. If you always order the same dish, why not mix it up? Explore lesser-known regional curries such as Goan fish curry, Bengali mustard chicken, or a rich Rogan Josh from Kashmir. Many Indian restaurants offer a wide variety of dishes from different regions, allowing you to broaden your culinary horizons.
Host a Curry Night
Gather your friends or family for a curry night at home. You could order a variety of dishes from your local curry house and share them, or each person could bring their favourite homemade curry for a communal feast. It’s a great way to try different dishes and celebrate the cultural richness that curry brings.
Learn About the Origins of Curry
National Curry Week is also an excellent time to delve deeper into the history and cultural significance of curry. Understanding the origins of the spices and techniques used in different types of curries can enhance your appreciation of the dish. You might also want to explore the historical ties between the UK and the Indian subcontinent, which have shaped the evolution of curry in Britain.
The Future of Curry in the UK
Curry is not just a dish of the past; it’s a food that continues to evolve. With more people experimenting with plant-based diets, we’re seeing a rise in vegan and vegetarian curry options. Fusion dishes, combining British and Indian influences, are also becoming more popular, ensuring that curry remains a dynamic and integral part of British cuisine.
In recent years, initiatives like National Curry Week have helped to spotlight not only the incredible flavours of curry but also the stories of those behind the dishes. From the chefs who bring their culinary expertise to the table to the families who run curry houses for generations, curry in the UK is a story of community, resilience, and shared culture.
National Curry Week is a time to celebrate everything that curry represents – from its rich flavours to its cultural significance. Whether you’re a fan of a mild butter chicken or prefer the fiery punch of a phaal, this week is all about embracing the dish that has captured the hearts (and stomachs) of millions across the UK. So, grab your naan, prepare your rice, and celebrate this flavour-packed week in true British style!

Ethical Hydration Brand 'One Water' Wins at 2024 Frontier Awards
Top-sellers in stores 'win' a place on a trip to visit some of One Water's clean water projects in Malawi. One Water Founder Duncan Goose visited 14 high footfall branches of World Duty Free's stores this year across UK airports and at Eurotunnel Folkestone, covering a distance of 2,000 miles on his Honda Africa Twin Motorcycle. Duncan's 'lightbulb moment' to set up One was on a round-the-world trip he made in 1998 on the same bike: an encounter with Hurricane Mitch in Honduras inspired a new career in global development.
The decade-long relationship between One Water and World Duty Free - based on a shared vision of a world in which everyone has access to clean water - has meant that the travel retailer thus far has contributed £2.7 million to projects around the world.
Funds from The One Foundation achieved via World Duty Free sales have been donated to rehabilitate water points and to bring water access back into communities and have particularly impacted work in Malawi's rural communities, where farmers are working to grow sufficient crops to feed themselves and their families.
Donations have also funded the provision of gravity-fed and solar pumping systems, meaning that clean water is now readily available in schools and health clinics. Catastrophic cyclones have impacted areas of Malawi over the last three years, washing away houses and crops, and contaminating water points, so the funds that continue to be raised are vital, to help communities recover and regenerate.
To date, The One Foundation has raised over £30 million through partners such as World Duty Free, Bidfood, Co-Op, and Starbucks.
Entries for the Frontier Awards were received from around the world, showcasing the very best of the industry. A panel of independent, expert judges pored over the entries to choose this year's finalists and eventual winners, which celebrated the best of innovation and excellence in the travel retail sector.
Says Duncan Goose, Founder of One Water: “It was such an honour to be invited to Cannes for the 40th anniversary of the Frontier Awards. To be nominated alongside many famous and iconic global brands was recognition enough, but to actually win the award was unexpected and very humbling.
"It recognises the exceptional work of all those at Avolta and World Duty Free who believe in what we are trying to do to help those that live without access to clean water and my hope is that this award will bring attention not only to the team of people who make this all possible within Avolta, but the wider issue itself. It's an incredible honour to be part of this journey that has already changed 5 million people's lives.
"Water is vital for life, yet 703 million people globally still don't have access to safe drinking water and over 1.7 billion people lack access to a decent toilet. 3.4 million people die every year from waterborne diseases and sadly many are children under the age of 5 years old. Around the world, women and children often bear the responsibility of collecting water for their families and can walk up to 4 hours a day just to find water.
"We want World Duty Free's fantastic staff to see for themselves what their hard work has contributed to. We thank them for their continued support, it means everything to us and the beneficiaries who they are supporting in sub-Saharan Africa. We hope the upcoming trip will inspire them. Their help has been life-changing for millions. We estimate that there are still 65,000 handpumps in Malawi that are in dire need of repair and World Duty Free are integral to facilitating change, one day at a time.”
By total chance One Water asked us to share their story with you. Their email arrived just after I posted up a story about water infusion, a different, but related topic.
The Pros and Cons of Mineral-Infused Waters
But are they worth the hype? Below, we'll explore the pros and cons of mineral-infused waters to help you decide if they're the right choice for your lifestyle.
The Pros of Mineral-Infused Waters
Enhanced Hydration While plain water is always beneficial, mineral-infused waters can potentially provide better hydration, especially for athletes or individuals engaged in strenuous activities. The added electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, and sodium help maintain fluid balance, preventing dehydration and supporting muscle function.
Added Nutrients Mineral-infused waters contain essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are vital for various bodily functions. For those who don't get enough of these nutrients through their diet, drinking mineral-infused water could provide a convenient boost.
Improved Taste For those who find regular water bland, mineral-infused waters can offer a more enjoyable flavour without added sugars or artificial ingredients. This could encourage people to drink more water, improving overall hydration.
Natural Sourcing Some mineral-infused waters come from natural springs, boasting a unique mineral profile. These naturally occurring minerals may have been in the earth for centuries, lending an air of purity and sustainability to the product.
Digestive Health Certain minerals found in infused waters, such as magnesium, have been linked to improved digestion and bowel regularity. Drinking these waters could support overall gut health and even reduce bloating.
The Cons of Mineral-Infused Waters
Cost Mineral-infused waters are often significantly more expensive than tap water or regular bottled water. For those on a budget, the price can be hard to justify, especially when tap water in many regions is already safe to drink and provides sufficient hydration.
Not a Substitute for a Balanced Diet While mineral-infused waters can supplement your intake of certain nutrients, they shouldn’t replace a healthy, balanced diet. The amounts of minerals they provide are generally quite small and won’t meet your daily nutritional needs on their own.
Potential Overconsumption While minerals like calcium and magnesium are essential for health, it's possible to consume too much. If you’re already taking supplements or eating a mineral-rich diet, drinking mineral-infused water might lead to excessive intake, which can cause issues like kidney stones or digestive problems.
Environmental Impact Many mineral-infused waters come in single-use plastic bottles, contributing to environmental pollution. While some brands offer eco-friendly packaging or encourage recycling, the environmental cost of packaging and transporting bottled water can still be significant.
Added Sodium Some mineral waters contain higher levels of sodium, which may not be suitable for those with high blood pressure or other cardiovascular conditions. Always check the label to ensure the sodium content fits with your dietary needs.
Mineral-infused waters can be a great addition to your hydration routine, especially if you’re looking for added electrolytes, improved flavour, or a natural source of minerals. However, they do come with some downsides, particularly when it comes to cost and potential overconsumption of certain minerals. As with most things, moderation is key. While mineral-infused waters can offer certain health benefits, they should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet and sustainable lifestyle.
Ultimately, the choice to drink mineral-infused water comes down to personal preference, dietary needs, and lifestyle considerations. Whether you're an athlete in need of replenishing electrolytes or simply someone looking for a tastier way to stay hydrated, it's worth weighing the pros and cons before making it a regular part of your routine.
A Refreshing Trend: The Rise of Low and No Alcohol Beverages in the UK
Gone are the days when choosing not to drink alcohol meant limited options of sugary soft drinks or bland non-alcoholic beers.
The market for low and no-alcohol wines, beers, and ciders has exploded, offering a range of flavourful, sophisticated, and refreshing alternatives for those who want to cut back on alcohol without compromising on taste or the social experience.
Why the Surge in Low and No Alcohol Drinks?
Several factors have contributed to the increasing demand for alcohol-free and low-alcohol beverages. Changing lifestyles, growing awareness of health and wellness, and the global push towards mindful drinking have all played their part. Many people, from millennials to older generations, are seeking out healthier choices, reducing their alcohol consumption in favour of drinks that are lighter in calories but still deliver a full-flavoured experience.
The rise of initiatives like Dry January and Sober October have also contributed to this movement. These campaigns encourage temporary abstinence from alcohol, promoting a more balanced approach to drinking. At the same time, the quality of low and no-alcohol alternatives has vastly improved, making it easier for people to enjoy a great drink without feeling like they are missing out.
The Evolution of Non-Alcoholic Wines
Traditionally, non-alcoholic wines had a bad reputation for being overly sweet or lacking the depth and complexity of their alcoholic counterparts. However, new production methods, including better dealcoholisation processes, have significantly enhanced the flavour profiles of alcohol-free wines, bringing them closer to the real thing.
One standout brand in this category is Eisberg, which produces a range of alcohol-free wines including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé. Their wines offer an authentic experience, boasting the full-bodied character and refreshing crispness you'd expect from a good glass of wine, minus the alcohol.
Another player in this space is McGuigan Zero, an Australian brand that has expanded into the UK market. Known for its Chardonnay and Shiraz varieties, McGuigan Zero's alcohol-free offerings are crafted to retain the richness and fruitiness of traditional wines, making them a fantastic option for those seeking a healthier alternative without sacrificing taste.
Beer Goes Low or No Alcohol – and it’s Delicious!
The no-alcohol beer market has experienced a similar revolution. Craft breweries and large brands alike have been refining their recipes, using advanced brewing techniques to produce low and no-alcohol beers that taste just as satisfying as their boozy counterparts.
Leading the charge is BrewDog, a Scottish brewery known for its innovation. Their Punk AF (Alcohol Free) has won many fans, offering a hoppy and fruity pale ale experience without the alcohol. BrewDog has expanded its alcohol-free range with options like Nanny State, a malty, slightly bitter brew, perfect for those who still crave the richness of traditional ales.
Another noteworthy brand is Heineken 0.0, which has taken the UK market by storm with its smooth, refreshing taste that mirrors the original Heineken, but without the alcohol. With its easy availability in pubs and supermarkets, it's now a go-to for those looking to enjoy a beer without the effects of alcohol.
Guinness 0.0 is a very tasty alcohol free stout which tastes very similar to its older alcoholic cousin. Available in many supermarkets, off licences and some pubs including the Wetherspoon chain.
For those who love lager, Beck’s Blue continues to be a strong contender, maintaining its crisp, clean flavour, making it a familiar choice for anyone seeking a zero-alcohol option.
Ciders: Fruity and Fresh, Minus the Booze
Cider lovers are also well catered for in the low and no-alcohol category. Traditionally a high-alcohol drink due to its fermentation process, cider now offers an exciting array of lighter options that don’t skimp on the refreshing, fruity taste that has made it so popular.
Kopparberg has been a trailblazer in this area, with alcohol-free versions of its famous fruity ciders, such as the Alcohol-Free Mixed Fruit and Alcohol-Free Strawberry & Lime. These drinks still pack in all the juicy, vibrant flavours that Kopparberg is known for, making them a great choice for summer gatherings or casual sipping.
Another cider brand worth mentioning is Old Mout, whose Alcohol-Free Berries & Cherries cider is a delightful mix of sweet and tangy berries, perfect for those who enjoy a fruit-forward cider without the alcohol.
The Future is Low and No Alcohol
As demand for low and no-alcohol beverages continues to rise, we can expect to see even more innovation in this space. Whether it's for health reasons, a desire to cut back, or simply to enjoy a great-tasting drink without the effects of alcohol, UK consumers are increasingly spoilt for choice. With brands like Eisberg, BrewDog, Heineken, and Kopparberg leading the way, the days of feeling left out when choosing alcohol-free drinks are well and truly over.
Cheers to a future filled with more flavourful, inclusive, and refreshing options for everyone!
How to Celebrate National Apple Day on 21st October
This beloved celebration, introduced in 1990 by Common Ground, highlights the diversity of British apples and the importance of orchards in our landscape and culture.
Whether you’re an apple enthusiast or just looking for a way to enjoy this delightful fruit, here are some ways to celebrate National Apple Day.
1. Visit an Orchard
There’s no better way to appreciate apples than by visiting a local orchard. Across the UK, many orchards open their doors to the public for apple-picking experiences. Wander through rows of apple trees, breathe in the fresh autumn air, and handpick your favourite varieties. This is not only a fun day out but also a fantastic way to support local farmers and experience the full variety of British apples. From the classic Bramley to lesser-known heritage varieties, there’s something for everyone.
2. Host an Apple Tasting Party
Apples come in an incredible range of flavours, textures, and colours. Why not invite friends and family over for an apple-tasting party? Gather different varieties from your local market or farm shop – perhaps a Cox's Orange Pippin, Egremont Russet, or a crisp Granny Smith. You can cut them into slices and taste the subtle differences in sweetness, tartness, and texture. Pair them with cheeses, honey, or even apple-based beverages like cider for an extra treat!
3. Make Homemade Apple Treats
Apples are one of the most versatile fruits in the kitchen. Celebrate National Apple Day by trying your hand at making classic apple recipes. A warm apple crumble is a British favourite, or for something a little different, try baking apple and cinnamon scones or a rich apple tarte Tatin. For those feeling adventurous, you could even try making your own apple cider or chutney.
4. Get Crafty with Apples
For those with children, National Apple Day can be a fun and creative way to engage in some autumn-themed crafts. Carving apples, making apple prints, or even creating decorative apple garlands are simple, enjoyable activities that can involve the whole family. You could also try making dried apple rings for a healthy snack or even as ornaments for a festive feel later in the year.
5. Learn About the Apple’s History
Apples have a long and rich history, and National Apple Day is a perfect opportunity to learn more about this fascinating fruit. The UK has a proud heritage of apple cultivation, with some varieties dating back hundreds of years. Visit a local apple festival, attend talks about apple-growing traditions, or check out your local library for books on British apple varieties and orchard conservation. If you're interested in sustainability, this is also an excellent time to reflect on how supporting local produce and traditional apple varieties contributes to biodiversity and reduces food miles.
6. Support Local Apple Farmers
Buying apples from local farmers' markets, farm shops, or directly from orchards is a great way to celebrate the day. Many independent growers specialise in heritage varieties that you won’t find in supermarkets, allowing you to support smaller businesses and enjoy unique flavours. Additionally, purchasing locally helps reduce your carbon footprint and fosters a stronger connection with the seasons and your local environment.
7. Enjoy an Apple Walk
Another wonderful way to celebrate National Apple Day is by taking an apple walk. Some orchards and gardens host guided tours where you can learn more about different apple varieties, the process of growing them, and the importance of orchard conservation. For a more leisurely option, why not take a stroll through your local countryside, keeping an eye out for wild apple trees and enjoying the autumn colours?
8. Join a Local Apple Day Event
Many communities across the UK organise Apple Day events filled with activities such as apple pressing, cider tasting, and apple-related games for children. These events celebrate the cultural significance of apples and often include local music, food stalls, and even competitions like the largest apple or longest apple peel. Check your local listings to see if any events are happening near you – it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the day with your community.
National Apple Day is not just about celebrating a fruit; it’s about recognising the deep connection between apples, our environment, and our heritage. Whether you’re tasting new varieties, baking apple-inspired treats, or enjoying a day in the orchard, there are so many ways to immerse yourself in the spirit of this day. So, on 21st October, embrace the beauty of autumn, savour the flavours of the season, and celebrate the humble apple in all its glory!
