Aldi reduces plastic wrapping on minced beef

Aldi has announced it is trialling the sale of vacuum and flow-wrap packed beef mince to cut the amount of plastic packaging it users by up to 73%.

As well as significantly reducing plastic use, the changes are expected to increase the shelf life of minced beef, keeping products fresher for longer, without impacting either quality or taste.

The trials are taking place to see which packaging customers prefer alongside looking at how the supermarket can further reduce plastic waste in the future.

The aim of the trial is to understand which packaging customers prefer alongside helping Aldi the further cut plastic waste.

The new packaging removes the need for paper linings and no carbon dioxide is used in production, delivering further environmental benefits without impacting the quality or taste of the product.

In fact, the new packaging is expected to increase the shelf life of minced beef by keeping it fresher for longer.

The vacuum packaging trial has gone live across select stores in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands and Worcestershire. (EDITOR: That's us covered, then!)

The flow-wrap trial will be rolled out in the same areas later in the year during November.

Luke Emery, who holds the role of Aldi's Plastics and Packaging Director, said: “At Aldi we're constantly reviewing ways to become more eco-friendly and reduce plastic use wherever possible.

“These trials promise a range of environmental benefits without impact on quality and it could lead to significant reductions in plastic, food miles and food waste if rolled out across all our stores.”

The move follows Aldi’s switch to colourless milk caps across all of its 990 UK stores in a bid to improve the recyclability of the bottles.

The roll out will mean a further 200 tonnes of High-Density Polythene (rHDPE) in the bottle tops can be reused to create new milk bottles.

Plan your wedding wine list with Aldi. And get free wedding day wine!

Newlyweds-to-be will be in with a chance of having their wedding wine absolutely free in Aldi’s newest competition which is open until 11th September.

With the average UK wedding costing nearly £20,000, Aldi is offering cheaper alternatives to help couples during the cost-of-living crisis.

Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn gives top wedding wine tips including whether you should or shouldn’t match wine with your food.

Getting married has never been pricier, with the average wedding now costing £19,1841 and alcohol alone taking something like 10% (£1,800) of the budget.

Aldi, which is The Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year, says shoppers can make big savings on their big day by sourcing their wine from Aldi, which can cost as little as £2.25 per person.

Proving that you really can’t put a price on love and to celebrate these impressive savings, the discounter is offering three lucky couples ‘to be’ 60 bottles of award-winning wine to contribute to their special day – FOR ABSOLUTELY FREE!

To be in with a chance of receiving a mix of white, red and rosé wine supplied by Aldi, all budding couples need to do is send an email to aldiweddingwines@clarioncomms.co.uk with the below details:

Full name

Proof of age

Date and location of wedding

150 words explaining why you think you should receive a selection of Aldi’s wines for your wedding.

Sam Caporn, Mistress of Wine says: “I know myself when you’re planning a wedding, there’s so much to think about and decisions like choosing the right wines can be daunting and a bit overwhelming, especially when budgets are tight.

"Together with Aldi, I want to show happy couples they don’t need to compromise on the quality of wine at their wedding to get a bargain and by following these few simple tips, it can be a lot easier than couples might think.”

Sam Caporn, Mistress of Wine’s I dos and don’ts of choosing wines for weddings:

Don’t try to match it with the food – A common mistake people make is focusing on matching the wine with the food when actually guests will prefer to stick to one wine throughout. Plus, the meal is very much just one part of the wedding.

It’s better therefore to opt for easy-drinking wines, i.e. not too oaky or acidic, not too high tannin or rich. A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (Freeman’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc £6.79, 75cl) or a soft Pinot Grigio such as Aldi’s Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, available for just £4.49, are sure to be confirmed crowd-pleasers!

Do match the wine to the season Whether a relaxed outdoor summer gathering or an elegant indoor winter wedding, the season can drastically change what wine to serve. For a winter wedding upweight easy-drinking but well-bodied red wines such as a Shiraz (Cambalala South African Shiraz £4.75, 75cl) or Malbec-I would recommend60:40 red to whites. Whereas for summer weddings, introduce rosé into the mix (30:30 rosé to whites).

Do opt for alternatives to Champagne – Couples often assume you need champagne for their wedding toast. However, Champagne for a wedding can get very pricey. Think of fizz alternatives like a Crémant, which is a delicious alternative, this premium French fizz is made in the same style, by the same methods so you might be surprised how few people will notice the difference, especially as often bubbles are pre-poured or obscured by a white napkin. Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant du Jura (£8.99, 75cl) is a purse-friendly alternative to luxury brands, but equally as tasty. Available in store 11th September.

Don’t splash out unnecessarily. You really don’t need to spend lots of money for a delicious wedding wine. Focus on good-quality but great-value favourites rather than expensive, premium bottles. The style of wines like Premier Crus are often not to everyone’s taste, so do focus on more approachable wines. A Spanish Rioja Reserva like Aldi’s Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserva (£5.99, 75cl) or Argentinian Malbec like the Specially Selected Argentinian Malbec (£6.59,75cl) are great choices for red wines.

But please don’t forget the non-drinkers. Whether they're a designated driver, pregnant, abstaining or just generally prefer not to drink alcohol, having fun no or low alcohol options will make everyone feel included. Aldi’s 0% sparkling, Zerozecco is just £2.99, tastes delicious and is perfect for the toast.

Entries to the competition are now open until Monday 11th September. To enter now and view the full terms and conditions, visit the Aldi Wedding Wines page on https://www.aldi.co.uk/free-wedding-wine

Once safely deposited in the great outdoors (IE, the garden!) you can just give the safe, Spider Repellent Spray (£4.99) a spritz to keep them outside.

Aldi is removing ‘Use By’ dates from its fresh milk to help reduce food waste

Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket will instead begin using ‘Best Before’ dates on milk bottles,  but excluding filtered milk, across its English and Welsh stores to prevent milk from being thrown away unnecessarily. The changes will start rolling out in stores by year's end.

According to leading waste reduction charity WRAP, almost 300,000 tonnes of milk is wasted by UK households annually, with half of households stating the reason for pouring it away is due to it not being consumed by the Use By date.

As milk can be safe to use past its Best Before date, provided it's been stored properly and doesn’t smell off, Aldi will encourage shoppers to perform a ‘sniff test’ to determine whether their milk is still fine to use.

Said Liz Fox, who is Aldi UK's sustainability Director at Aldi UK: “We're constantly striving and working  hard to be a more sustainable retailer and we're dedicated to preventing food waste wherever we possibly can, both in our stores and helping customers throw away less food at their homes.

“We hope shoppers will embrace this change and look, smell, and taste their milk to see if it’s still fine to use, so together we'll be able to reduce the effect food waste has on the environment.”

The removal of Use By Dates is Aldi's latest move to reduce its food waste, as it works towards its goal of halving this by 2030.

Aldi's already removed Best Before dates from some 60 fresh fruit and vegetable lines, including apples and pears, citrus fruits, potatoes, carrots and onions, and earlier this year rolled out its partnership with food surplus app Too Good To Go nationwide. Customers can purchase a Too Good To Go ‘magic bag’ of food that is approaching the end of its shelf life for £3.30, with each bag containing at least £10 of groceries.

Aldi also recently introduced clear caps on its milk bottles to improve recyclability.

Social media budgeting guru @budgetingmum has revealed her five go-to recipes for keeping the whole family fed during the school summer holidays and they all come in at under £1 per meal.

Beth Turbutt-Rogers, known by her 185k loyal social media following for her innovative budgeting hacks and handy parenting tips, has unveiled she uses less than £20 worth of Aldi ingredients to create five tasty dinner recipes that the whole family enjoy whilst the little ones are off school.

The video shows Beth whizzing together five dinners including an uber-healthy three bean chilli and a mouth-watering Wagamama inspired katsu curry, complete with hidden veggies for fussy little ones, all for under £20 at Aldi.

The handy recipe guide has already proved popular with her followers, gaining likes and comments in their thousands. One follower stated “this will really help reduce the cost of my food shop!” and another said, “get me to Aldi – now!”

Beth, who lives with her husband and two youngsters,  commended her Aldi shopping experience saying: “Aldi is the best place to get everything you need without breaking your bank.”

Beth also went on to say: “As the summer holidays arrive, lots of families will feel the pinch when it comes to food shopping. Having the children at home might mean routines are completely different and for this reason you might start to see a rise in the weekly cost.  But don’t fret! With a little planning and opting for low-cost ingredients, you can get through the summer holidays on a budget and still enjoy tasty, nutritious meals.”

As well as putting together this helpful school holiday dinner guide, Beth's also shared her top 10 hacks when budgeting for the weekly shop during the school summer holidays:

Overlap: Plan meals with overlapping ingredients. EG, if you’re buying potatoes, buy a larger pack which you can use to make jacket potatoes one night and a potato pie the next. Or if you’re buying bacon lardons, buy a two pack which you can use for two meals!

Meal plan: This is a guaranteed way to save you money as you’ll have well thought out meal ideas for the week. This is especially relevant during the holidays when the food shop needs to feed the whole family all day, every day!

Go frozen or tinned: Consider buying frozen or tinned vegetables for a great way to inject nutrients to food on a budget.

Go plant based: Swapping to plant-based alternatives can often be cheaper than meat products, and more sustainable too.

Buy in bulk: Bulk buying certain items, EG, buying a larger pack of toilet roll, will work out cheaper in the long run. This is especially vital during the school holidays when we seem to go through household items far more quickly than usual.

Cook from scratch: Cooking from scratch – learning how to make things like sauces from basic ingredients such as milk, butter and flour can save you money. This is a great one to pick up during the holidays when we’re not so time poor!

Divide and conquer: Try buying a whole chicken and dividing the meat into several meals throughout the week to make it go further.

Batch cook: Batch cooking can not only save you time, but it can also save money if planned properly. This means more time to spend playing with little ones during the holidays!

Freeze it: Using your freezer to ensure food doesn’t go off before you have time to eat it can reduce food waste and save you money, too.

Enjoy family time: Eat together as a family! Doing separate meals for children can be costly, so make meals that are suitable for all the family will help cut your costs, too. Particularly during the holidays, this is a great time to make the best of having everyone at home and enjoy eating together.

Beth’s innovative dinner recipes have been created to please fussy children while ensuring parents get something delicious and nutritious for dinner, too. The full shopping list for these dinners comes in at less than £20 – so that’s £1 per meal for a family of four:

Recipe 1: Cheeseburger pasta bake with vegetarian mince

Recipe 2: Cheese and bacon potato pie with beans

Recipe 3: Three bean chilli with rice

Recipe 4: Katsu chicken curry and rice

Recipe 5: Bacon potato bake with egg and beans

Aldi announces its biggest ever summer holidays meal donations

Aldi is looking to make its biggest and best ever meal donation over the school holidays so far, with what's the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket expecting to offer something like 1.5 million meals to those in need of food poverty help during the upcoming summer holidays.

All of its over 990 UK stores will support local charities and foodbanks during a period of increased demand by redistributing surplus food via community giving platform Neighbourly, with the supermarket already donating over seven million meals so far this year.

During this summer, Aldi will also be giving every child in the UK a chance to try an Olympic or Paralympic sport for free as part of its ‘Get a Taste for Sport’ initiative.

In partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB, shoppers who spend over £30 in store before Monday 31st July will receive a voucher which will enable a child to a free taster session of an Olympic or Paralympic sport, helping parents meet the cost of extra-curricular activities during the long summer holidays.

Liz Fox, who is the Corporate Responsibility Director at Aldi UK, said: “The school holidays are always an incredibly difficult time for households across the UK, worsened by the continuing cost-of-living crisis. That’s why Aldi is firmly committed to supporting even more families in need this summer via our food donations scheme with Neighbourly, helping vital local charities provide meals to those who need them the most.”

Steve Butterworth, from Neighbourly, added: “Demand on charities and foodbanks is incredibly high and these organisations are in need of more support than ever before. This push in donations from Aldi will be absolutely vital in helping so many families during the school holidays and we're fully aware how grateful they'll be.”

Since Aldi’s partnership with Neighbourly began back in 2019, stores have already donated in excess of a staggering and heart-warming 35 million meals.

Shoppers can also donate food to local charities, food banks and community groups via the community donation points that are located within Aldi stores nationwide.

Britain’s fourth largest supermarket also works with Company Shop, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, to redistribute surplus food from its Regional Distribution Centres to Community Shops around the country.
