Richmond-Based Business Warns Epr Scheme Creating 'Unfair Market' as Glass Sales Plunge £400,000

One Water sells spring water in a variety of formats to supermarkets, wholesale and catering and the travel sector, and is the official water partner of Brentford FC.

With each product sold, a donation is made to The One Foundation to fund clean water projects around the world.

Their glass range was widely used in hospitality venues in the UK, however the new regulations have given One Water no option but to increase glass product prices and this has meant customers have been dropping in their droves.

One Water's founder Duncan Goose believes the EPR bill was broadly in line with expectations after months of preparation, but criticised the surprise addition of a 4% impairment charge to cover debts from non-compliant businesses, as well as an additional scheme administration fee, despite having already paid to register with the Environment Agency.

The firm said the financial impact of EPR has forced a review of operating costs. While it has ruled out cutting support to its charity partner, The One Foundation, it must now consider reducing its use of glass packaging and recovering some costs through customer price increases.

Thus far, the firm has been hit by £400,000 in lost sales, mostly through hotels, bars and restaurants.

Duncan Goose told That's Food and Drink: “We have had to review our operating costs, and we're adamant that we won't cut support to our charity partner, The One Foundation.

"We will have to rethink what we do with our glass packaging going forward, and monitor our price increase, we've already had to increase the costs. Larger companies may be better equipped to absorb these costs, but we're competing against brands that have not yet registered or submitted data, creating a highly distorted and unfair market. We need better levels of enforcement, beyond a reporting hotline and an impairment charge, there is not much more being done to ensure that we have a level playing field here.”

Under previous rules, customers covered 48% of waste management fees.

Duncan Goose wants the UK to rethink how it looks at Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) once more.

“Including glass within DRS would remove a major distortion. Drinks containers included within the future DRS scheme are exempt from EPR, which incentivises a switch from glass to plastic on cost grounds - undermining sustainability goals.

"EPR in its current form places a disproportionate burden on responsible, compliant businesses, while allowing non-compliance to distort the market.

"Effective enforcement and a more coherent national strategy could ensure the scheme achieves its intended environmental goals without penalising those who are playing by the rules.”

One Water Picks Up the Pace With New Hire

Frances Lewthwaite, an experienced expert in social media, influencer marketing, and brand and charity partnerships, will play a key role in amplifying One Water's mission and expanding its presence across digital and retail channels.

Frances brings extensive experience from both corporate and high-growth brand environments, having worked with companies including Vitamin Well and its associated brands Barebells and NOCCO, Brands2Life, and FUEL10K.

Throughout her career, she has consistently delivered measurable results, including establishing Vitamin Well's TikTok presence with 2 million organic views and 30,000 followers in just four months, while growing Instagram reach to 2 million per month.

At FUEL10K, she led a charity partnership with FareShare that has since become an annual initiative donating over 1 million meals.

At One Water, Frances will focus on amplifying communication of the company's purpose-driven mission, both across social media and in-person events. She will also collaborate with the sales team to support new business opportunities, increasing the brand's accessibility to consumers and enabling them to “Do One Good Thing" with every purchase.

In partnership with The One Foundation, One has raised over £30m since its launch in 2005, helping to fund clean water and sanitation projects that have transformed the lives of over 5 million people in communities across Africa and beyond. With increased visibility at Sainsbury's, One Water expects to accelerate its mission towards ending water poverty.

Ian Spooner, Brand Director at One Water told That's Food and Drink: "Frances brings data-driven rigour combined with the pragmatism and drive of someone who thrives in startups and high-growth brands. This is a busy time for us with Sainsbury's and Brentford activity ramping up and we can't wait for Frances to get stuck in. Her hustle mentality coupled with her corporate experience is going to be perfect.”

Frances Lewthwaite, Marketing Manager added: "I'm thrilled to join One Water and help amplify a mission I genuinely believe in. Every bottle of One Water helps to change lives, and I look forward to creating meaningful campaigns that connect with consumers, encourage positive action, and drive growth for the brand."

Ultramarathon lover Frances raises money through her running for charity in her spare time.

Brentford Makes One Water New Official Water Partner

Brentford has agreed a new partnership with B Corp-certified, ethical water brand One Water, a leading supplier of sustainable water products and advocates for global access to safe, clean water.

In the opinion of That's Food and Drink, this is a wonderful departure from the usual sight of football clubs being sponsored by potentially unhealthy brands, gambling sites and the like.

One Water will become the club's official water partner and exclusively supply its range of sustainably packaged spring water on matchdays and commercial events at Gtech Community Stadium.

One Water will also be the sole water supplier at the club's training ground, the Robert Rowan Performance Centre, providing much-needed hydration for Brentford's men's, women's and academy teams in training sessions.

The agreement welcomes One Water into Brentford's portfolio of partners that share the club's community values. Since its launch in 2005, in partnership with The One Foundation it has raised over £30 million for clean water and sanitation projects around the world and changed the lives of more than five million people, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa.

The partnership also reflects Brentford's ongoing efforts to improve its environmental impact. The decision to partner with One Water is credit to its ethical practices, commitment to decarbonisation, and diverse range of products that enables the club to meet its water needs in more sustainable ways, such as 500ml plastic bottles that are made from 100 percent recycled PET, recycled from old bottles, and are fully recyclable.

One Water plastic bottles and glass bottles will be available to fans, players and staff across all of Brentford's sites. One Water will also collaborate with Brentford FC Community Sports Trust on a project engaging fans and local residents in west London.

Brentford FC commercial director, Fran Jones told That's Food and Drink: “Brentford and One Water have the same goal of supporting and inspiring communities.

"Our sustainability strategy is ambitious, and to achieve our objectives we need support from great partners.  We're delighted to work with One Water and I'm excited to see what we can learn from them and how we can make a positive impact together.”

Head of sustainability and community, James Beale added: “As we continue to progress on our own sustainability strategy, One Water will really help us as we work towards achieving our objectives and reaching our targets.

"The clarity they provide on carbon emissions and circularity in their range helps us to be data-driven in our approach to measuring the impact of supplying water where we need it. Working with One Water is a big step forward for us on our sustainability journey.”

Brand director at One, Ian Spooner commented: “We've been exploring new ways to share the One story and our approach to sustainability through strategic partnerships. In working with Brentford FC, we have found both a purpose-oriented, like-minded local partner and a doorway to new audiences through Premier League football.

"We're hugely excited about the partnership and look forward to working closely with them on their sustainability journey, raising additional funds for The One Foundation and helping Brentford fans 'do One good thing'.”

From Bike to Bottle: One Water Launches Travel Trade Sales Incentive Tour as World Duty Free Donations Hit £2.95m Milestone

Ethical water brand One Water has launched its annual Travel Trade Awareness Tour in partnership with Avolta, in its World Duty Free stores which are in 38 locations across the UK, including most UK airports.

With over £2.95 million raised to date through One Water sales in World Duty Free stores, the campaign continues to transform lives by funding clean water projects in areas like rural Malawi.

Funds raised via sales of One Water bottles at UK airports have contributed towards the rehabilitation of broken water points, the installation of gravity-fed and solar-powered systems, and restoring water access to health clinics and schools. These efforts are especially vital in the wake of recent cyclones that devastated Malawian villages, washing away homes and contaminating water sources.

The campaign's launch marks the return of One Water founder Duncan Goose's annual motorcycle tour, a purpose-driven road trip visiting World Duty Free stores and offices across the UK. Riding the same Honda Africa Twin motorbike he used during a life-changing round-the-world trip in 1998, a journey that inspired the creation of One Water, Duncan meets frontline staff to thank them and share real-world updates on how their work contributes to life-saving water projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Duncan Goose told That's Food and Drink: “We want World Duty Free's incredible staff to see how their work is changing lives. Every bottle sold brings us closer to a world where no one is left without clean water.

"This year, we have talked a lot about the concept of Do One Good Thing - where one small action can change lives. The simple choice of choosing One when you are travelling will have a ripple effect across the world.”

As part of the incentive, the top eight One Water sellers across Avolta's World Duty Free store network will win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Malawi this November. The immersive trip includes site visits to local water projects, meetings with NGO partners, traditional Malawian hospitality, and a visit to a National Park.

Added Eve Fifer, Commercial Director at World Duty Free: “Our teams are incredibly passionate about supporting One Water and sharing its mission with the millions of travellers who visit our stores. It's a real highlight for them when Duncan takes to the road and visits our stores and offices, sharing his inspirational message with both staff and customers. This campaign is our chance to spotlight the real impact behind every bottle.”

World Duty Free was one of the first UK retailers to support the One Water brand, stocking it since 2006 in UK airports, its UK based Eurotunnel store, and its store at St Pancras train station, as well as on P&O ferries.
