Our friends over at Specialist Devon-based food, drink and lifestyle PR agency RAW are expanding at great pace and, amongst a number of recent new business wins, is now working splendidly with The Collective at Woolsery.

And to ensure it can properly resource its growing client base, RAW has recruited highly experienced PR practitioner and influencer Cheska Hull.

Hayley continued“ It is exciting to have Cheska on our ever growing team.  Cheska previously starred in BAFTA award-winning reality show 'Made In Chelsea' as well as running her own PR company for five years and she's a popular influencer in her own right, with an incredible black book of highly valuable contacts.”

Cheska added: “It's brilliant to be working with such a creative and vibrant team here in Devon.  We represent the best food, drink and lifestyle brands from both the South West region and further afield. You'll be captivated by the burst of summer flavours in their summer cup scones and no-churn summer cup clotted cream ice cream, perfectly complementing the cream tea ensemble. (That's Food and Drink has already published that recipe!)

Indulge in the spirit of Wimbledon, savour the delights of Trewithen Dairy's limited edition summer hamper, and experience the pinnacle of a English cream tea affair while enjoying Wimbledon.

Summer cup scones

Light and refreshing, the scones are a delicious talking-point to serve at parties for a summery twist on the classic cream tea. Pen Sans Summer Cup is bursting with ripe summer fruits and red berries - perfect with our luxurious Cornish clotted cream. Feel free to use shop-bought scones and take them to the next level if you haven’t time to bake your own.

Ingredients

For the scones

350g Self-raising flour, sieved

Pinch of salt

100g Trewithen Dairy unsalted butter

110ml Trewithen Dairy whole milk

1 Egg, beaten

For the topping

150g Frozen strawberries

2tbsp Caster sugar

50ml Pen Sans Summer Cup

Garnish

Fresh strawberries

Mint leaves

Cucumber, sliced

Trewithen Dairy Cornish clotted cream

Method

BeginS with the scones. Preheat the oven to 190c. Grease and line two baking trays.

Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to create fine breadcrumbs. Stream the milk in slowly, using a cold knife to gently mix until it just forms a dough. Wrap in cling film and chill for 20 minutes while you make the strawberry topping.

Place the frozen strawberries and a splash of water in a saucepan over a medium heat, allowing them to break down. At this point, add a measure of summer cup and caster sugar. Continue to stir for a couple of minutes until it has reduced down slightly. Remove from the heat and chill.

Back to the scones. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to a thickness of 2cm and cut into rounds with a cutter. Don’t twist them out of the cutter, otherwise they will warp in the oven.

Place on the baking trays, before brushing the tops with the beaten egg. Bake for 12 minutes until slightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack.

To serve, smother with strawberry sauce, a generous spoonful of Cornish clotted cream and garnish with strawberries, cucumber and mint. Enjoy with a large jug of summer cup filled with summery botanicals. Heaven!

No-churn summer cup clotted cream ice-cream

The epitome of summer flavours, Pen Sans Summer Cup is bursting with red berry aromas and pairs perfectly with our rich Cornish clotted cream. Make this easy no-churn ice-cream in advance so you have it ready to pull out of the freezer for hot days and al fresco dessert.

Ingredients

2 Large eggs

125g Caster sugar

250ml Double cream

200g Trewithen Dairy Cornish clotted cream

250ml Trewithen Dairy whole milk

200g Strawberries - frozen (defrosted) or fresh

1 tbsp Icing sugar

50ml Pen Sans Summer Cup

Garnish

Mint leaves

Strawberries

Orange slices

Method

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until light and fluffy. While still whisking, add the caster sugar, one spoonful at a time and continue mixing for a few minutes. Add both creams and pour in the milk, while continuing to whisk.

Pour into a freezer-proof container (a loaf or baking tin works well) and freeze for two hours. Remove from the freezer, whisk thoroughly and return to the freezer.

In the meantime, place the strawberries and a splash of water in a small saucepan over a medium heat and cook until the strawberries break down into a sauce. Add the icing sugar and Pen Sans Summer Cup. Allow to simmer for a few minutes until the mixture reduces slightly. Set aside too cool.

Stir the strawberry sauce through the semi-frozen ice cream and, using a cocktail stick, pull it gently through to create a beautiful marbling effect. Add the remaining strawberries on top and return to the freezer until frozen - approximately one hour later. When you’re ready to serve, remove from the freezer and add fresh strawberries, mint and orange slices to garnish. Enjoy in cones or bowls.

Ganley & Naish Wins Unique Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards 2023

The results are now in for this year's Sandford Orchards Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards and the 2023 gold winner is Ganley & Naish with silvers being awarded to Palmers Upland Cyder and Tinston Wines and Cider.

The Sandford Orchards Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards, now in their third year, are truly remarkable awards that offer aspiring cider makers advice, guidance and guaranteed listings in the on and off trade and offering genuine support of the future of cider in the UK.

Barny Butterfield, who is the Chief Cidermaker at Sandford Orchards and founder of the awards comments: ”After the success of last year's competition, we were genuinely thrilled and pleased to see even more interest in the awards this year.

"We had a total of 24 entries, from counties all across the UK, with all styles of cider represented. Naturally sweet to single variety, session ciders to bottle fermented ciders. The judges were so impressed with the quality of all of the ciders that were entered, which is a real compliment to the standard of cider now being produced all over the UK.”

The esteemed panel of judges included renowned drinks writer, Pete Brown, cider producer and director of The Cider House London, Mary Topp, 2020 Masterchef Professionals winner, Alex Webb, food and drink editor for Hearst Magazines, Emma Franklin and Sandford Orchards' very own Barny Butterfield.

Ganley & Naish's winning cider, Hell and High Water (ABV 5.5%) is a single variety, Browns apple cider in a 440ml can. A medium dry, sparkling cider that the judges described as unique, beautiful, impressive and drinkable.

They described it as: “ This is a crisp and gently complex cider with a lovely sweetness to acid balance. Ridiculously moreish, light on the palate -fault free, an amazing single variety with an apple notoriously difficult to nail down! The branding is sensational, breaks the mould and brings a contemporary and classic feel to an amazing drink.”

Andy Jenkins at Ganley & Naish was delighted to receive the gold award and commented: “To get this cider out had been very trying; COVID, new packing type, new branding, new artwork, working with new people and building those relationships. So to win this award, with a product I'm incredibly proud of, has made it even more special and more rewarding.”

Ganley & Naish's impressive prize package includes a £500 Vigo voucher, a listing at their local Stable Pizza, a listing at The London Cider House, a Sandford Orchards collaboration limited edition cider and a visit by Sandford Orchards' cider makers to offer practical help and advice about setting up.

The gold and silver winners will all receive mentoring from Sandford Orchards' cider makers, a yearlong listing at Devon's Darts Farm and a listing on www.sandfordorchards.co.uk. In addition, the silver winners both receive a £200 voucher from Bag in Box Shop UK

Barny went on to say: “The Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards are nothing like any other cider competition. It's the competition I wish I could have entered and won when I was starting out. Without a budget, without much help and support it can be really daunting trying to get started in any career, let alone cider making!

"It feels great to be able to give something back to the industry that has given me so much. This is an award with the kind of bankable bonus that doesn't grow on trees! We're really keen to ensure all these cider makers go on to fulfil their part in our quest to bring the joy of cider to as many people as we possibly can!”

He went on to say: "Sandford Orchards would like to thank the generous sponsors of this year's competition: Vigo Ltd who are providing a £500 voucher for the gold winner, The Stable and The London Cider House who are giving the gold winner a listing and The Bag in Box Shop who are giving away £200 vouchers to the two silver winners.

"The Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards were launched by Sandford Orchards at the end of 2019 and aim to recognise and celebrate excellent quality whole juice ciders from around the UK. On Saturday 29th April, the Head of The Dart event returned to the waters in Dartmouth with 240 stand up paddle boarders taking part, bringing excitement and energy to the town.

The largest paddle board event in the UK, participants started in Dartmouth and paddled 12 km to the finish in Totnes, with over half the fleet taking part for the first time.

Participant ages ranged from 18 to early 70's. The event featured races for all skill levels, from novice to elite, and showcased the beauty and athleticism of SUP boarding.

For the first time in seven years, the annual event was able to run the full course (previous events were altered due to inclement weather) and with the sun out, it made for a fantastic day.  The event saw people travelling from all around the country to take part, with paddlers coming from as far as Cumbria, Northumberland and Jersey.

Participant, Alasdair Conn commented: “It's the first time I've paddled that part of the Dart and I'm looking forward to going back and taking my time to explore, it is a beautiful estuary and river.”

This year saw Starboard SUP UK team rider Hector Jessel, 19 years old, win the '14' Men's race fleet' improving on his third place from last year, with local Will Keetley coming in second.

Ginnie Betts, who has raced across Europe, took home first place in the '14' Women's race' having not taken part since 2019.

The Head of the Dart event is not only a great day out for participants and spectators, but also provides a boost to the local economy, with over 60 per cent of participants coming from outside Devon.

Howard Davies, Co-Founder and Director of sponsor, Salcombe Gin said: "It is brilliant to sponsor such a fantastic event year on year, we are always blown away by the amazing support that is shown by those taking part and those coming to watch. The Head of the Dart is a fantastic event that brings people together from all over the country to enjoy the beauty of the River Dart and the excitement of competitive paddle boarding."

John Hibbard, CEO of sponsor, Red Paddle Co added: “It was fantastic to see so many seasoned paddlers and new SUPers out in force for this year's Head of the Dart event.

“It was a perfect day with a vast number of people having the absolute best day out, with the sun shining and an incredibly positive atmosphere. It's great to be able to welcome so many paddle boarders to Red's home turf and experience South Devon in its prime. The Head of the Dart is a very special event with paddlers from all walks of life and experience levels all coming together, encouraging each other to complete the challenge."

Food Drink Devon Shines a Light on County's Food and Drink to a National Audience

(As a proud Plymothian, or Janner, my wife vigorously approves of this message!)

Championing quality, sustainability and provenance, Food Drink Devon is shining a light on the county's food and drink to a nationwide audience with events at the Houses of Parliament and the QEll Centre over the coming month.

At these events, the ongoing innovation, drive and enterprise within the entire region of Devon will be showcased. There will be a selection of producers on display, such as Luscombe Drinks, Hattiers Rum, Salcombe Gin and Sharpham wines from Sandridge Barton, plus leading hospitality businesses, like Boringdon Hall, Saunton Sands Hotel, Winslade Manor and The View restaurant which is at the new Courtyard by Marriott Sandy Park Hotel.

This incredibly active and vibrant organisation, which is going from strength-to-strength, has now reached a record 350 members and has grown its team with a new membership development manager, Kate Rippin.

It has a host of networking events, workshops and trade and consumer shows planned, plus its highly regarded awards which are currently open for entries. The recent The Source trade show, at which Food Drink Devon had an important presence, reflected the energy within the food and drink sector in the region.

The forthcoming Toby's Garden Festival, 28th and 29th April, at Powderham Castle will have a tempting selection of local food and drink all provided by Food Drink Devon members.

Greg Parsons, who is the proactive chair of Food Drink Devon, says: “It's exciting to be hosting a 'Taste of Devon' event with Anthony Mangnall MP in the House of Commons at the Palace of Westminster in March to showcase the best of Devon's food and drink industry to an influential audience.

"In addition, Food Drink Devon will also be at the International Media Marketplace (IMM) at the QEII Centre where hundreds of travel journalists attend to see highlights from all over the world.  Last year Devon was named as one of the 'planet's most unmissable tourist destinations' in globally read Time magazine following the IMM."

Greg continues to say: “Devon is home to a flourishing food and drink sector with more than its fair share of award-winning producers and hospitality businesses.  Lush pasture, high moorland and miles of coast yield delicious meat and dairy, abundant seafood and Michelin stars, but Devon also has bright, new start-ups and exciting foodie entrepreneurs who merit a wider audience.”

Other news is that Food Drink Devon has transferred to a Community Interest Company.  While always a not-for-profit organisation, this legal structure means the company can apply for additional funding and is built from the ground up to serve and benefit its community,  who are members of Food Drink Devon.

Whereas before Food Drink Devon needed to operate like a business, it now has the freedom to operate in a more philanthropic way, working with service providers who better match its requirements and bringing more benefit to its members.

Also, Food Drink Devon has changed its banking to Triodos. Which is an ethical bank committed to the future, Triodos is a world leader in sustainable banking so again matches the ethos behind the membership organisation.

Food Drink Devon is committed to increasing the county's profile, both nationally and internationally and represents a membership of Devon's leading food and drink producers, retailers, hospitality venues and related businesses dedicated to serving up the best produce from the county.  With a focus on quality, sustainability and provenance, Food Drink Devon's aim is to support and promote their members and raise Devon's culinary profile as a whole.  Look out for the green heart logo which is carried by over 350 producers and businesses across Devon.

For more information on Food Drink Devon visit www.fooddrinkdevon.co.uk or follow @FoodDrinkDevon on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
