Tesco is keeping low prices low, with over a thousand everyday products price locked until Easter 2023

Tesco has announced a new price lock on over a thousand products, which will run until Easter 2023.

The price lock underlines Tesco’s unwavering commitment to great value for its customers.

This time, as well as popular branded products, prices have been locked on many favourite own-brand staples too, meaning customers can shop a wide range of products bought week-in, week-out – from cupboard essentials and teatime favourites to household and health & beauty products – safe in the knowledge they are locked at a low price.

So whether it’s Tesco Breaded Plaice Fillets and McCain Home Chips for a tasty midweek dinner or Nescafe Instant Coffee and Tesco Tea Bags alongside a bowl of Kelloggs All-Bran to start your morning right, our customers can count on the price of over 1,000 products at Tesco to be the same each time they shop – helping them stick to budgets and spend less on their shopping.

The latest price lock announced today follows last year’s price lock commitment, which saw prices frozen from 5 October until the start of 2023. Locking these Low Everyday Prices is a key part of Tesco’s commitment to delivering great value on the weekly shop – going hand-in-hand with Aldi Price Match, great value own-brand staples through ‘Exclusively at Tesco’ brands and exclusive deals through Clubcard Prices.

Tesco UK CEO, Jason Tarry, said: “As we start the New Year, we know times are tough for many of our customers right now. We hope this extended price lock commitment gives our customers the certainty of knowing that over a thousand household favourites and own brand essentials will stay at the same low price for months to come – helping them budget when they need it most.”

• Price Lock includes over 1,000 products across larger Tesco stores and online. Excludes Express.

• Prices locked until 10/4/2023.

Morrisons kickstarts the year with price cuts on Savers range

Morrisons is cutting 130 prices across its entry level products to help customers’ money go further throughout the January squeeze.

The cuts include important fresh and frozen products for family meals and lunch boxes, together with cupboard essentials and household products to help customers across their shopping.

Morrisons has invested over £16 million to make these cuts as customers look for help on their weekly shop after the expense of Christmas and as the cost of living crisis continues to impact household grocery budgets.

Fresh products like bacon, pre-cooked chicken and cheese which can be used to make hearty meals have had their prices reduced as well as fruit and vegetables including apples, pears and potatoes.  Frozen ready meals, fish fingers and prawns have been cut along with cupboard fillers like tins of beans, chopped tomatoes and tuna chunks.  Household essentials such as laundry powder, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets have also seen their prices slashed as have toothbrushes, toothpaste and sanitary products.

Morrisons entry level range has 263 products, 28 of which were new additions within the last six months.  This month the range will grow further with the introduction of cherry tomatoes, easy peel oranges, green beans and mixed peppers.

David Potts, Chief Executive, Morrisons, said: “Our Savers range offers customers great value on the products they buy every day. We want to do all we can to help when it comes to the cost of grocery shopping and by investing in the range and cutting the prices further, our customers will see a noticeable impact on their budgets at a time when they really need it.”

Morrisons price cuts will be communicated to customers via TV, radio, press, digital display and social media as well as email and online activity. On the website, the Savers range will be highlighted on the homepage under Morrisons ‘More Way to Save’ section and until January 22nd, the seasonal aisle in Morrisons stores will feature displays of the ambient Savers products in one place to help customers shop the breadth of the range, while the fresh and frozen items will have prominent displays in their aisles to help customers identify them.

Morrisons entry level range includes ‘Morrisons Savers’, ‘Morrisons Wonky’ in produce and ‘Morrisons Essentials’ in homeware and health & beauty.  The price cuts are in all of Morrisons 498 supermarkets and the majority of products can be found online.

What to do after dry January? Vidrate has the answers!

9 million people are estimated to be participating in Dry January this year, and the first night out on the town back after 4 weeks alcohol free could be a heavy one.

If you don’t fancy nursing the mother of all hangovers the next day, Nick Hird from Vidrate have stepped in to advise the UK on how to properly hydrate and fight off the dreaded post night out grogginess.

“Whether you’ve been participating in Dry January and had an alcohol free month, or you've seen sipping wine here and there; - the dreaded hangover the next day may put you off. Here are our top tips for preventing a rough post party.

- Hydrate before drinking

'Dehydration is the main cause of feeling hungover, alongside vitamin depletion and excessively putting toxins into your body. By staying hydrated before drinking you’re giving your body a head start. You're supposed to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid everyday - so this gives you an idea of how much you should be drinking to stay hydrated.

- Make sure you eat

This is an obvious one, but one many people ignore. Don't start drinking on an empty stomach as this makes your body absorb the alcohol quicker. By eating a well-balanced meal before a night out, you slow down the body's alcohol absorption rate.

- Drink water with your alcohol

Alcohol is a diuretic, which stimulates your kidneys to produce urine, meaning it makes you lose more water than you take on board. Basically, you pee more than you drink, which means you are dehydrating yourself and with that you also lose some of the body's electrolytes.

Drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic drink keeps you hydrated and helps you retain some water, minerals and vitamins.

- Avoid fizzy drinks

Don’t drink non-alcoholic fizzy drinks, instead of water to try and fight off the hangover. Fizzy drinks actually increase the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol - so could make your hangover worse. Same with carbonated alcohol such as prosecco and champagne - the carbon dioxide speeds up your alcohol intake meaning you get drunker faster, resulting in a worse hangover.

- Don’t drink too much water

Don’t chug multiple glasses of water before bed as this might do more harm than good. Drinking water in excess means you’ll need to go to the toilet and can mess up your sleeping pattern.

Drink one glass of water before bed and keep another on your bedside table for when you wake up with a banging head and dry mouth. Think about adding a hydration powder, such as ViDrate, to your glass of water before bed to help replace the vitamins and minerals lost.

- Avoid coffee

Reaching for a cup of coffee on a hangover might seem like a good idea, but the caffeine dehydrates you further - making your hangover even worse.

- Have a power nap

Sleep is one of the best hangover remedies but when you’ve been drinking the alcohol disturbs your restorative sleep. Try and schedule in a power nap the next day, or if you don't have time make sure you get an early night so your body can recover.

- Exercise

Yes exercise! We know the last thing you want to do when your head is pounding is exercise. But even a short walk or jog will make you feel better due to the fresh air and endorphins released by physical activity.

- Ginger

If your stomach is unsettled and you keep getting waves of nausea then ginger is a great remedy. Ginger helps reduce inflammation and helps settle your stomach.”

Good Guys introduce tastier, healthier meltier biscuits

You'll be able to enjoy snacking the lighter, meltier, healthier, tasty way with totally new Biscuit Melts from Good Guys Bakehouse, the challenger brand on a mission to put the ‘good’ into savoury snacking.

Unlike a lot of savoury snacks makers who spray their snacks with flavourings and extra oils, the moreish Biscuit Melts, available in Cheddar or Peppered flavours, are made with generous helpings of real Cheddar Cheese, Chilli Powder, Black Pepper and Spices to tantalise the taste buds, and baked to perfection to lock in the all important flavours.

As a result, the tasty, crispy, wafer light biscuit melts are packed with real flavour and contain 50% less fat. Even better, they’re just 5 calories each!

Says Steve Monk, Founder of Good Guys Bakehouse: “At Good Guys, we believe snacks taste best when they’re simply baked with real ingredients. Unlike many brands that spray flavourings and extra oils onto their snacks, we bake in utterly natural ingredients so our biscuits don’t just taste real, they’re lower in fat and calories too.  Perfect for guilt free snacking on the sofa!”

Good Guys Biscuit Melts are available to buy on Amazon and in Sainsbury's stores from this month. The RRP is £1.75 for each carton containing 39 biscuits.

So who are the Good Guys?

They're a group of snack lovers who left their jobs at a major snack firm and who joined together as they understand that making the best tasting healthier snacks wasn't about what you could take out, but what you baked in.

They craft 'Seriously Snackable' healthier biscuits which are crammed full of real ingredients, not padded with air or sprayed with flavourings and extra oils. More of the real, means less of the rubbish!

For them diversity in background and experience makes for a better workplace, which makes better biscuits. They feel passionately that everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and are proud to donate 5% of profits to the Up Reach charity that works to improve social mobility.

Bio -Synergy Immune booster

Bio -Synergy Immune booster is a wonderful product from the Bio-Synergy company.

All you need do is take three capsules a day with a drink of water.

Why should you take them? Because it's the cold and flu season and everyone needs to make sure that they are capable of working at maximum efficiency. They are high strength and contain a special immune stimulating blend of nifty and highly useful antiviral botanicals, plus some Zinc and Vitamin C.

What's in them? Elderberry, echinacea purpurea root, liquorice root, astragalus root, HPMC (vegan capsule shell) ascorbic acid, zinc oxide and magnesium stearate.

And with a nod toward Veganuary this product is guaranteed to be suitable for vegans. Which my wife was, obviously, very pleased with.

Precision Fuel provides you with Precision fuel (and hydration) precisely when and precisely where you need it.

Their range of fuel makes it easy to get the carbs you require when and where you need it.

The all-natural PF 30 Gel can be used on its own during shorter durations, or combined with other Precision Fuels and Hydration fuelling products or real foods when you are going longer.

Precision Fuel and Hydration comes in the form of an easy to use gel or in the form of soft chews. Flavours include original and also mint and lemon. (Yum!)

Precision Fuel and Hydration has a very good hydration offering to make sure that you don't get cramps when you are exercising. And believe me, cramps in the leg muscles or feet after exercise are no joke. So, why risk the excruciating agony of cramps if Precision Fuel and Hydration  can help you to prevent it?

Lift. Sometimes we do need a Lift

Yes, sometimes everyone needs a Lift. But in this case, it's a very special Lift provided by Lift.

There are Blueberry Burst Lift Fast Acting Glucose Chews. Each chewable tablet contains 3.7g of glucose, and only 15 calories per tablets.

How do you take them? Just chew one to three Lift tablets whenever you feel that you require a properly measured burst of quick acting glucose.

They are guaranteed to be gluten free and, unlike some glucose boost tablets, they do not have any added caffeine.

However, there's also the Lift Glucose Shot which gives you the benefit of a Lift Glucose boost in the form of a clear liquid shot but with a rather tasty Very Berry flavour. Also guaranteed to be caffeine and glucose free. (There's also lemon and lime flavour, too.)

Each bottle contains 15g of pure glucose with 57 calories per bottle.

To learn more visit them at https://www.liftglucose.com/lift-juice-shots.

They are made by BBI Healthcare and is available on Amazon, Asda, Boots, Tesco, Superdrug, Chemist.co.uk.

Moju Vitamin D Shots

Moju Vitamin D Shots are powered by nature.

They are made using apple and orange (20%) lemon and ginger root (5%) Turmeric root, 2% and Vitamin D3 which is extracted from seaweed which it produces as it absorbs sunlight (0.001%) plus there's Ascorbic Acid as an antioxidant.

Each bottle is 420ml and contains seven shots. They need to be kept in the fridge and must be consumed within seven days.

They can be taken as a straight shot or can be added to water or added to a smoothie. In the opinion of my wife and I they are good as straight shots but do taste even better when mixed with water.

They are great as part of your morning breakfast ritual or are good as an afternoon lift. If you take each shot with a meal this will mean maximum absorption.

Other flavours and types of shot are available.

To learn more or to order visit https://mojudrinks.com/products.

Moju will deliver direct to your address.

Nutrigums

Nutrigums are declared to be "the softer side of nutrition" and we can definitely confirm that!

My wife tested the Premium Series Mind Rescue Bears Gummy Bears that have zero added sugar.

She felt that the pineapple flavour was "obviously natural and tasted nice."

What pleased her more was the fact that the Rescue Bears are guaranteed to be suitable to be suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as she doesn't like the fact that some gummy nutrition products can, sometimes, contain beef gelatine. Which Nutrigums are guaranteed to not contain.

She is a health professional and felt confident enough in saying that she was sure that the Rescue Bears were really benefiting here.

What's in them? "Green Tea, Taurine, Glycine, Iodine, Chamomile and Lemon Balm with Vitamin B3, B6, B12, Folic Acid and Biotin which all contribute to normal psychological function.  In addition, we have added Vitamin B5 which contributes to our normal mental performance. Fibre & Fruit pectin based with no added sugars. Suitable for Halal and Kosher. Developed to support Mind & Mood. Suitable for Adults & Children Age 5+ Years."

To learn more or to order visit https://www.nutrigums.co.uk.

The normal price is £19.99 for a 60 tablet bottle, but the current price is £16.99.

Check out their other products on their website.

Ginsters serve up slices of meat-free pastry tastiness for Veganuary

Two iconic British flavours, new Cauliflower Cheese and, back by popular demand, Creamy Garlic Mushroom

With 7.2m million of us Brits now following meat-free diets, and 620 million taking part in Veganuary 2022 around the world, Ginsters is bringing two new flavour-packed plant-based slices to supermarket shelves: Ginsters Cauliflower Cheese Slice and Ginsters Vegan Creamy Garlic Mushroom Slice, both just £1.65 RRP each.

Lovingly created by Ginsters chefs to provide a satisfying and convenient meat-free lunch, both slices have been launched to help Brits who have made meat-free new year’s resolutions, or who are simply fans of a warming pastry packed full of flavour.

Perfect for cheese-lovers, the brand new winter classic Cauliflower Cheese, combines cauliflower florets with a creamy West-Country Cheddar cheese and onion sauce, with a hint of nutmeg, wrapped in golden flaky puff pastry and topped with a mature cheddar and black onion seed crumb.

What’s more, the Creamy Garlic Mushroom slice was a vegan sensation when it launched last year as a Limited Edition flavour and is now returning to shelves due to popular demand. Featuring golden, light puff pastry and a filling of sliced white and chestnut mushrooms in a creamy coconut milk and white wine sauce, including roasted garlic, potato, onion, herbs, and a hint of lemon zest.

Costing under £2 each, both slices also make a wallet-friendly lunch, and are best enjoyed hot.

Sarah Babb from Ginsters said: “January can be a tough month with post-festive blues settling in and wallets feeling even tighter than usual, so we wanted to launch a couple of delicious slices which are warming, satisfying, and made with British ingredients. Both the Cauliflower Cheese and Creamy Garlic Mushroom slices make a tasty, quick and fulfilling lunch – especially once warmed in the oven or air fryer on those nippy winter days”.

Meat-free doesn’t need to equal ‘taste-less' or ‘cost-more' this January. Both the Ginsters Cauliflower Cheese Slice and Creamy Garlic Mushroom Slice will be available to purchase from supermarkets nationwide from 2nd January 2023.

The Ginsters Cauliflower Cheese slice will be available to purchase from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsburys from 2nd January 2023. The Ginsters Vegan Creamy Garlic Mushroom Slice will be available at Tesco from 2nd January 2023.

Heinz introduce new plant-based varieties for Veganuary

Heinz has launched its first plant-based versions of its iconic Cream of Tomato Soup and Beanz and Sausages, just in time for Veganuary!

Foodie favourites for well over 100 years, the brand-new Heinz Creamy Tomato Soup and Heinz Beanz and Vegan Sausages offer the iconic Heinz taste, but they are now also plant based, too!

The new varieties are already available to buy from Ocado, followed by Sainsbury’s from 8th January.

Not only are they warming, delicious and comforting, they are also vegan, too!

The new Heinz Creamy Tomato Soup and Heinz Beanz and Vegan Sausages are ideal for all flexitarian and plant-based eaters as the winter nights draw in, and of course, for all those taking on the challenge of Veganuary 2023.

Packed with the taste of Heinz that we all admire, know and love, the plant-based take on two much loved classics comes after numerous Heinz fans called for Heinz to make vegan versions of its favourites over the last several years.

Announcing the launch, Manel Jordao, who is the Brand Manager at Heinz, said: “Since 1869, Heinz have been at the heart of food innovation and our founder, Henry J. Heinz, was truly one of the first plant-based food pioneers. Not only did he develop some of his first products from ingredients grown in his mother’s own garden, iconic products like Heinz Tomato Ketchup and Heinz Beanz have always been plant-based from the very beginning.

“And now, over 150 years later, we’re continuing to honour Henry’s legacy by finding new ways to bring some of our most loved classic varieties, including Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup and Heinz Beanz and Sausages, to the table.

“Our incredibly exciting (and also incredibly delicious) Heinz plant-based innovations have been several years in the making to provide giving the iconic taste of Heinz, but now plant-based! We’re sorry it’s been such a long time coming but trust us when we say they’ve been well worth the wait. And just in time for Veganuary too!”

Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Toni Vernelli, International Head of Communications and Marketing at the charity Veganuary, said: “This is SUCH exciting news! These products are British staples and our participants have consistently told us they would love vegan versions so it’s wonderful to see Heinz responding to this growing demand for plant-based options.

“Veganuary’s role is to help people choose plant-based foods, whether their motivation is health, planet, people or animals. And our job is made much easier when people can simply choose vegan versions of their favourite foods. Thank you, Heinz!”

Both recipes make up one of your five a day, have no artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

NEW Heinz Creamy Tomato Soup (RRP £1.70) and Heinz Beanz and Vegan Sausages (RRP £2) are available to buy from Ocado from 28th December 2022 and Sainsbury’s from 8th January 2023.

Thatchers 2023 Community Orchard Project Is Open for Applications for trees

Somerset cider maker Thatchers is opening applications for its 2023 Community Orchard project today, 4th January 2023.

In the third  year of the project, the fourth-generation cider maker has increased the number of apple trees it has to give away, with 500 available to community groups up and down the country.

The project aims to encourage tree planting in both inner city and rural communities by community groups and charities.

Groups can apply to be considered for a bundle of 5 apple trees each by visiting www.thatcherscider.co.uk/thatchers-community-orchard.

Applicants will be asked to fill in a simple form, with details of their community group, describing how the trees will be of benefit to them. Applications close on 3rd February 2023.

“Planting trees means so much to us as cider makers, and we want to spread our passion far and wide,” says fourth generation cider maker Martin Thatcher, who planted his first apple tree aged five.

“We all know planting trees helps the environment and supports biodiversity, but being out in nature is so good for our wellbeing, too. Over the last two years our project has been able to help residential groups rewild their local communities; provide schools with trees for their pupils to learn from; and help care homes create peaceful havens for their residents.

“We're looking forward to hearing from community groups again this year, 2023 and help spread our love of apple trees far and wide.”

In 2022, Thatchers were able to give away 350 apple trees, to over 50 organisations from all across the UK, doubling the number it was able to support in the project's first year.

Thatchers is once again looking for groups, large or small, schools, care homes, communities, who believe they would benefit from growing apple trees, to take part in this project.

Thatchers orchard manager, Chris Muntz-Torres has chosen the varieties of apple trees to be donated to the groups very carefully.

Explains Chris: “We've carefully chosen varieties suited to easy growing and which require the minimum of upkeep in whatever parts of the country the recipients live.” explains Chris.

He added: “Varieties will include Bramley, Scrumptious, Dabinett and Katy, that could be pressed into juice, or of course enjoyed as eating or cooking apples, too. We'll provide stakes, guards and ties to assist in planting, plus detailed instructions on how to plant a tree.”

Will your cocktails be vegan too?

That's probably something you might not have thought of, but if you are taking the time and effort to make some tasty vegan meals, what about the drinks that will accompany then?

Well, here are some vegan cocktails you can make at home.

We are becoming increasingly conscious of what we are putting into our bodies and the impact the animal industry has on the environment. Veganism was once considered a niche fringe movement – herbivores had to scour health food stores for plant-based food. Now, there are more vegan food and drink products available than ever before.

Check out how you can serve up drinks to suit every taste while avoiding animal-based products.

Refreshing grapefruit paloma

Grapefruit can be an acquired taste, but in a cocktail, it is refreshing and light with a little fizz – perfect for summer. Mixing this drink also creates a beautiful light pink hue that looks brilliant in the sun. Similar to a margarita cocktail, the paloma is a popular drink in Mexico.

Ingredients:

45ml tequila

Fentimans soda water

60ml squeezed grapefruit juice

1 tablespoon sugar

Kosher salt

Cubed or crushed ice

Method:

Run a wedge of grapefruit around the rim of a margarita glass and then dip in salt. Fill the glass with ice to keep it cool.

Mix and stir the grapefruit juice with the sugar and then add the juice and tequila to a cocktail shaker filled half with ice. Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously.

Pour into the margarita glass and top off with Fentimans soda water to taste. Stir and garnish with a slice of grapefruit.

Strawberry lemonade

Full of fruity flavour with the perfect kick of alcohol, this cocktail might go down just a little bit too easily. The Fentimans Victorian Lemonade has the juice of one and a half lemons in each bottle and is botanically brewed for a unique kick – it is certainly more than just your typical lemonade, which makes this drink extra special.

Ingredients:

35ml berry vodka

Fentimans Victorian Lemonade

Dash of sugar syrup

2 strawberries, diced

Fresh mint

Method:

Muddle the strawberries in the sugar syrup. Then, add mint and vodka and stir.

Add ice and top up with Fentimans Victorian Lemonade. Garnish with mint and strawberries.

If you want to remove bits, shake all the ingredients apart from the lemonade in a cocktail shaker and strain into the glass.

Indian summer cup

Having a few people over? Impress them with this aromatic, sweet cocktail that they can help themselves to. Packed with many different flavours, this drink is sure to get the party started.

Ingredients:

1 litre bottle London dry gin

1 litre bottle of vegan-friendly sweet vermouth

240ml elderflower liqueur

240ml peach liqueur

710ml lemon syrup

460ml apple juice

1000ml chilled Fentimans tonic water

460ml chilled sparkling water

Ice

1 sliced green apple

2 sliced peaches

6 long and thin cucumber slices

30g torn mint leaves

Method:

In a large bowl, combine the gin, vermouth, elderflower, peach liqueurs, lemon syrup, and apple juice. Refrigerate for about four hours until it is chilled.

When chilled, stir in the tonic water and sparkling water.

Add ice and garnish with the apple, peaches, cucumber, and mint leaves.

Black cherry bourbon cola

Sweet, simple, and popular with everyone. It's well known that cola and cherries go well together. Just add bourbon and you've created the perfect summer drink for later in the day. The bonus is that if cola makes it that little bit too sweet for you, Fentimans Ginger Beer or soda water make for the ideal mixer to change up the flavours.

Ingredients:

30ml bourbon

15ml cherry brandy

3 black cherries, pitted

1/4 a lime, juiced (and a wedge to garnish with)

Chilled Fentimans Curiosity Cola

Ginger beer and soda water, optional

Method:

Muddle the cherries and then mix in a cocktail shaker with the cherries, bourbon, brandy, lime juice, and ice.

Strain the cocktail over a glass with ice in.

Top up with cola (and ginger beer and soda water, if desired, to taste) and serve with a wedge of lime.

Raspberry mojito

Everyone loves a mojito, and the best thing about this recipe is that you can simply change the fruit for different flavours. Easy to drink and very refreshing, this cocktail is one of the easiest to make.

Ingredients:

60ml white rum

Fentimans Soda Water

5 raspberries

1 lime, freshly squeezed

1 tsp sugar

Small handful of mint leaves

Ice

Method:

Muddle the raspberries, mint, and sugar together in the juice that you have freshly squeezed from the lime.

Pour the cocktail over ice into a tall glass.

Add the rum while stirring with a spoon. Top up with soda water to taste and serve with mint.

This Veganuary Treat Your Tastebuds to Intense Flavour with Holy Lama Spice Drops

Thinking of joining the Veganuary movement this year? But maybe you are are worried by rumours that vegan food can be somewhat bland? Then you need to try Holy Lama Spice Drops!

These aromatic natural drops add instant, intense flavours to any recipe, whilst also at the same time removing the need for heavy salty seasoning.

It’s too much of a generalisation to say that vegan food is bland, as with any food it depends on the ingredients and flavours used.

But what is true with meat dishes, the meat itself inevitably adds distinct, strong flavours, while good, honest vegetables offer a more subtle taste profile.

To heighten their flavour, enthusiastic seasoning may occur with salt or sugar, salty soy or other well-seasoned sauces, or perhaps cheese alternatives are added.

Spice Drops are vegan, gluten free, oxalate free, contain zero preservatives, additives, flavourings or alcohol and have no added salt or sugar.  They are simply highly concentrated natural extracts of herbs and spices with all their exceptional flavours, and they retain the natural goodness of the raw ingredients too. But, there’s no need to peel, grate, grind or chop; there’s no waste, left over stems, or leaves, just intense, authentic flavours.

There are over 30 varieties of Spice Drops which include fruits and flowers, plus classic spices and herbs like cardamom, cumin, coriander and turmeric.  There’s so much room for flavour experimentation with these little drops of magic that no meal whether meaty, vegan or vegetarian can possibly taste ‘bland’.

Try these simple recipes this Veganuary and wow your taste buds:

Red Lentil Daal with Spinach

Time: 30 mins

Serves 3-4

Protein and iron rich, delicious daal goes with anything or is simply fantastic on its own

Ingredients:

¾ cup dried red lentils

Water for cooking

1 tsp cumin seeds

Spray oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed (or 6-8 drops of Garlic Spice Drops®)

1 inch root ginger, grated (or 4 drops of Ginger Spice Drops®)

½ tin chopped tomatoes

1 tin boiled chickpeas

1 small bag of baby spinach, roughly chopped

Salt to taste

3 drops of Garam Masala Spice Drops®

1-2 drops of Asafoetida Spice Drops®

Method:

Wash the lentils thoroughly and in a big enough saucepan take the lentils and the water. The water line should be at least double that above the lentils. You can add more water depending on how thick or thin you prefer the consistency.

Once the lentils are at boiling point, lower the heat and cover until lentils are softened.

In separate pan, start by dry roasting the cumin seeds until they, very slightly, change colour – be mindful not to burn them. This only takes a few seconds.

Coat the pan with a few sprays of oil and stir fry the onion. You may need to add a few splashes of water to stop them from burning.

Once the onion has lightly browned, add the garlic, ginger (if using Spice Drops® add them all at the end) and tomatoes with all its juice. Cover for about 5 mins on low heat. You will notice the tomatoes will have reduced slightly and the mix will have blended well.

Add the chickpeas and red lentils and allow it to come to a boil.

Turn off the heat completely, add your chopped spinach and salt and stir well and cooking for 2-3 mins.

Finally add the Spice Drops® and give it another stir. Leave covered for 2 mins and serve hot.

Serve with rice and a huge Indian Style Salad of chopped red onion, tomato, cucumber and fresh coriander with a squeeze of lime.

Enjoy an Umazing Umami Veganuary - a Gut Health Boosting Miso & Shiitake Organic Powder, by London's Chef Kalvinder Chaggar

Umami is considered one of the five basic tastes, along with sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Its rich intensity comes from naturally occurring amino acids and nucleotides present in many foods, including mushrooms, miso, seaweed, and tomatoes.

UMAZING is The Brainchild of London-based, Vegan Chef Kalvinder Chaggar

Kally's enthusiasm for exotic ingredients and unusual flavour combinations, coupled with her keen interest in foods that nourish our health, culminated in her new product line.

She is fascinated by foods that boost the body's immune system – creating physical and mental harmony – and is passionate about sustainability.

“Our products are inspired by our mission to improve the quality of life for everyone while preserving our love for the natural world,” explains Kally. “We go beyond creating delicious cuisine to create culinary experiences that are healthy for your body, mind, and the planet as a whole.”

Join the 2023 Gut Health Revolution

This recently launched Miso and Shiitake Superboost Powder is a potent combination of fermented miso and other umami-rich ingredients, all of which are organically sourced and slow dried for maximum impact.

This results in a seasoning that deepens the flavour of savoury dishes, adds body, and lifts bland foods, such as plain rice and pasta, into another league.

The gut microbiota can be referred to as the 'second brain'.

Recent Gut Health Research Uncovers Physical and Mental Health Benefits

Researchers are seeking to understand how gut microorganisms can send signals to the brain, a communication pathway termed the gut-brain-axis. (Smith, 2015). While we try to build hypotheses around the functions, it is known that our gut accommodates neurotransmitters that are found in our brain and certain gut microorganisms can directly produce serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that can also act as a hormone.

Furthermore, research has found a link between the gut microbiota and alterations in brain development, mental and neurodevelopmental disorders, stress, and anxiety (Montiel-Castro et al., 2013, O'Mahony et al., 2015). A healthy microbiota contributes to a healthy balance of these neurotransmitters in the brain and is therefore significant for our overall mental health.

Miso contains several probiotics with Aspergillus oryzae being the main probiotic strain found. Miso can therefore potentially increase digestion by enhancing the probiotic activity and assists the body in maintaining a healthy microbiota (Mouritsen & Styrbæk, 2014).

Lower Your Salt Intake

Because salt is required to make miso, avoiding miso soup is sometimes advised to reduce dietary salt intake. However, recent research using salt-sensitive hypertensive models has revealed that miso reduces the effects of salt on blood pressure. Suggesting that miso does not raise blood pressure in the same way that salt does.

Furthermore, many clinical observational studies have found no link between the frequency of miso soup consumption and blood pressure levels or hypertension incidence (Ito, 2020).
