Raise Money for Charity by Hosting a Supper Club: A Delicious Way to Do Good

If you love cooking, entertaining, and supporting great causes, hosting a supper club might just be the perfect way to combine all three.

Supper clubs are intimate, pop-up dining experiences, often held in someone’s home or a community space, where guests donate money in exchange for a carefully curated meal.

But beyond the food and company, supper clubs can also be a fantastic way to raise funds for charity while fostering connection and community.

Here’s how you can start your own charity-focused supper club and make a real difference—one plate at a time.

1. Choose Your Cause

The first step is deciding which charity you want to support. Whether it's a local food bank, a health charity, an animal rescue, or an international aid organisation, make sure it’s a cause you feel passionate about. Reach out to the charity in advance—they might offer promotional support or materials to help you share their message on the night.

Tip: Look for charities that align with your supper club theme (e.g., a Mediterranean menu supporting refugee aid, or a vegetarian night raising funds for an animal sanctuary).

2. Plan the Supper Club Experience

Think about what kind of supper club you want to create. Will it be a cosy home-cooked meal around your dining table, or a garden feast under the stars? Keep the atmosphere relaxed and friendly—people are there to support a good cause and enjoy themselves.

Key elements to decide:

Number of guests: Start small (6–12 people) to keep it manageable.

Theme or cuisine: A consistent menu adds flair—think Italian trattoria, curry night, plant-based tasting menu, or seasonal British fare.

Date and location: Choose a time that gives you space to plan and promote.

3. Set a Donation Structure

Rather than charging for tickets, ask for a suggested donation. Let guests know all proceeds go to your chosen charity, and be clear about any costs you need to cover (though ideally, try to keep expenses low or find sponsors/donors to help offset them).

Ideas for handling donations:

Set up a JustGiving or GoFundMe page linked to the charity.

Use a QR code for easy digital donations on the night.

Offer a ‘pay what you feel’ model with a minimum suggested amount.

4. Create a Memorable Menu

Your food should be the star of the evening—so plan a menu that showcases your strengths, accommodates dietary needs, and suits the theme. A simple three-course meal or sharing platters can be just as impressive as fine dining if it’s made with care.

Menu planning tips:

Use seasonal, local ingredients to keep costs down and flavours fresh.

Offer a welcome drink or mocktail to start things off.

Include a printed menu card that features the charity and cause you're supporting.

5. Spread the Word

Promoting your supper club is key to getting bums on seats. Use social media, word of mouth, and local community boards to attract interest. Tell people what makes it special—home-cooked food, good company, and the chance to support a great cause.

Promotion ideas:

Create an event on Facebook or Eventbrite with all the details.

Post teaser photos of your test dishes or table setup.

Encourage guests to bring a friend or share the event online.

6. Add a Personal Touch

People love to know who’s behind the food and the fundraiser. Share your story on the night—why you chose this charity, what the cause means to you, and how their donations will help.

Consider including:

A short talk or video about the charity.

A printed leaflet or takeaway postcard with info and donation links.

A thank-you gift, like homemade biscuits or a recipe card.

7. Follow Up and Share Your Impact

After the supper club, thank your guests and share how much you raised. Post photos and updates online and tag the charity so they can see and share your support. This not only celebrates your success but builds momentum for the next one!

Hosting a supper club for charity is a beautiful way to turn your passion for food into tangible impact. Whether you raise £50 or £500, you’re making a difference—and chances are, your guests will leave feeling inspired, well-fed, and eager for the next invitation.

So roll up your sleeves, set the table, and cook for a cause—it’s one of the most rewarding meals you’ll ever make.

Homemade Club Sandwiches

Club sandwiches sound really fancy, don’t they?

The club sandwich, also sometimes known as a clubhouse sandwich, is a popular layered sandwich traditionally made with the following ingredients:

Bread: Usually three slices of white or wholemeal bread. Often toasted, sometimes not.

Protein: Typically includes cooked chicken or turkey, along with crispy bacon.

Vegetables: Slices of tomato and lettuce.

Condiment: Often spread with mayonnaise.

Extras: Sometimes includes cheese or other toppings, depending on the variation.

The sandwich is assembled in layers, with the middle slice of bread separating the fillings. It is usually cut into quarters, held together with cocktail sticks, and served with crisps or chips on the side.

It’s a classic choice in many cafés and pubs.

What about making a club sandwich yourself?

This is my simple and quick club sandwich.

Take three slices of bread. (Toasted or not) Two slices of ham, turkey, chicken, or a vegan alternative and cheese, dairy or vegan. Add leaves, etc, to taste, or not, your choice!

You can butter the slices of bread or not, it’s your choice, again.

Put a slice of bread on a plate, place a slice of meat on it, then cover with cheese, sliced or shredded/grated.

Place a second slice of bread on top of this, then place more meat on it, again topping with cheese.

Then place another slice of bread on top of the sandwich. You can put cheese on the top as a garnish if you want to, drizzled with Worcester Sauce, soy sauce, etc.

Grill it, microwave it for a couple of minutes or serve it uncooked.

Becoming a Master Sandwich Maker at Home

Sandwiches are a versatile and beloved staple in many households.

Whether you're packing lunch for work, preparing a quick snack, or creating a gourmet meal, mastering the art of sandwich making can elevate your culinary game by making gourmet sandwiches.

Here’s a guide to becoming a master sandwich maker at home, complete with tips, techniques, and a few inspiring recipes.

The Basics of a Great Sandwich

1. Quality Ingredients:

Bread: The foundation of any good sandwich is high-quality bread. Opt for freshly baked loaves from your local bakery. Sourdough, whole grain, ciabatta, or even a soft brioche can make all the difference.

Fillings: Fresh, high-quality fillings are key. Choose meats from your deli counter, fresh vegetables, and artisanal cheeses.

Spreads: Don’t skimp on the spreads. Homemade mayonnaise, mustards, pestos, and tapenades can elevate your sandwich.

2. Balance and Texture:

A great sandwich should have a balance of flavours and textures. Think about incorporating something crunchy, creamy, salty, and sweet.

Layer ingredients strategically. Place moist ingredients (like tomatoes or cucumbers) between dry ingredients to avoid soggy bread.

3. Seasoning:

Season your fillings. A pinch of salt, pepper, or a drizzle of olive oil can enhance the flavours.

Fresh herbs can add a burst of flavour. Try basil, coriander, parsley, or chives.

Techniques to Master

1. Toasting and Grilling:

Toasting or grilling your bread can add a delightful crunch and warm your fillings. Use a panini press, grill pan, or simply toast in the oven, or use a toaster.

Butter the outside of the bread before grilling for a golden, crispy finish.

2. Layering:

Start with a base layer of spread on both slices of bread.

Add cheese directly onto the spread to create a barrier for moisture.

Alternate layers of protein and vegetables to ensure even distribution.

3. Cutting and Presentation:

Use a sharp knife to cut sandwiches cleanly.

Diagonal cuts not only look appealing but also make sandwiches easier to eat.

Consider open-faced sandwiches for a more sophisticated presentation.

Inspirational Sandwich Recipes

1. The Classic Ploughman’s

Ingredients:

2 slices of crusty farmhouse bread

50g mature cheddar cheese, sliced

50g ham, sliced

2 tablespoons Branston pickle

1 tomato, sliced

A handful of watercress

Butter

Instructions:

Butter the bread slices on one side.

Spread Branston pickle on the other side of one slice.

Layer the cheese, ham, tomato, and watercress on top of the pickle.

Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side out.

Cut diagonally and serve.

2. Mediterranean Veggie Delight

Ingredients:

2 slices of ciabatta

50g hummus

1 roasted red pepper, sliced

1 small courgette, grilled and sliced

A handful of baby spinach

50g feta cheese, crumbled

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

Instructions:

Drizzle the ciabatta slices with olive oil and toast lightly.

Spread hummus on both slices. (I like to give my hummus 30 seconds to a minute in the microwave before putting it on the sandwich.)

Layer the roasted red pepper, grilled courgette, spinach, and feta.

Season with salt and pepper.

Top with the second slice of ciabatta and cut in half.

3. Gourmet Chicken and Avocado

Ingredients:

2 slices of whole grain bread

100g cooked chicken breast, sliced

1 ripe avocado, mashed

1 slice of Swiss cheese

2 slices of tomato

A handful of rocket (arugula)

Mayonnaise

Lemon juice

Salt and pepper

Instructions:

Toast the bread slices to your preference.

Mix the mashed avocado with a squeeze of lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

Spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread and the avocado mixture on the other.

Layer the chicken, Swiss cheese, tomato, and rocket.

Top with the second slice of bread and cut diagonally.

Tips for Sandwich Perfection

Experiment with Flavours: Don’t be afraid to try new combinations and flavours. Sweet and savoury pairings can be surprisingly delicious.

Experiment with style: Make a delicious club sandwich with three slices of bread.

Freshness Matters: Always use fresh ingredients and consume your sandwiches soon after making them for the best taste and texture.

Make-Ahead Tips: If you need to prepare sandwiches in advance, keep wet ingredients separate and assemble just before eating to avoid sogginess.

Mastering the art of sandwich making at home can transform a simple meal into a gourmet experience. With the right ingredients, techniques, and a bit of creativity, you can create sandwiches that are not only delicious but also a joy to make. Happy sandwich making!

Super Club revolution? That's Social Republic!

Social Republic LogoThere’s a buzz brewing on the supper club scene, and it’s set to revolutionise group dining!

Social Republic (http://www.socialrepublic.net) is for anyone who loves getting people together and entertaining over food, and for people who want to share the pleasures of dining.

It’s a fact that supper clubs have been around for a long time but traditionally they can be rigid with membership and expensive to join, plus they tend to diffuse the buzz created when new faces get to know each other over food because it’s the same private members who turn up every time.

That’s where Social Republic is different. When founder David Chapple recognised a lack of choice preventing people enjoying the true benefits of group dining, he took action. He says: “I wanted to create a global network of supper clubs where people enjoy choice and hosts have a greater pool of interested people to bring together for events. In other words, something very far removed from the rigidity of some introductions agencies.”

So much more than a What’s on Guide
Unlike some other dining events websites, Social Republic isn’t just a ‘what’s on’ guide to dining events or a general directory of supper clubs. It’s a whole networking platform for bringing hosts and guests together, face to face, with a focus on great food.

Social Republic members also have access to pop-up and underground restaurants and the home dining scene and restaurateurs and caterers wishing to boost their income or fill tables on quiet nights are fully supported in organising events and promoting them to members.

Something for Everyone
Whether looking to forge new friendships, seeking a love interest, networking for business or simply wishing to fulfil a desire for sharing the joys of good food whilst indulging in new company, members can find a perfect event on Social Republic. And the beauty is, if they want to make it their own, they can become a host and organise their own events.

David Chapple says: “We fully support our hosts. They can promote their events on our website and social media, share tips and receive support on our Facebook page and use our sales material. They can also take advance payments through our website.”

Charity Support for Global Angels
Social Republic is free to join for members and hosts and when a member pays for their meal in advance on the site, they also buy a meal for someone else in the world who needs it because Social Republic has teamed up with Global Angels (http://www.globalangels.org/), who put members’ donations in their entirety towards feeding people, and sometimes schooling them too.

Registration is free and takes just a few minutes. Visit http://www.socialrepublic.net/register.

Join the Birmingham Pudding and Desert Club

Despite the current climate of doom and gloom, the people of the Midlands - and further afield, have shown that they are determined to get their just desserts.

The Birmingham Pudding and Dessert Club launched by locally-based event and banqueting caterer Redcliffe has a waiting list for each of its events – held in the Victorian splendour of the City’s renowned Botanical Gardens.

Redcliffe Director Colin Cook said, “The Birmingham Pudding and Dessert Club has been an amazing success. Some might find this enthusiastic reaction surprising – after all we keep being told that we are all cutting back on eating out!

“This is not our experience, however. In times of recession, people need an affordable treat to cheer themselves up – and when things are going well, they want to celebrate. We provide a dazzling array of pure indulgence in the form of our delicious desserts matched by a suitable dessert wine to accompany the dish – and preceded by a tantalising main course.

“The dessert selection is different for each event and really gives our chefs the opportunity to experiment.

“One of the features of the Pudding and Dessert Club is our inimitable master of ceremonies Jason Pritchett who makes everyone feel relaxed and lose any guilt complexes that they may have!

“There is a lot of fun and enjoyment involved - and at the end of the evening, we ask our diners to vote for the best desserts and to suggest new alternatives for the next event.”

The Birmingham Pudding and Dessert Club began in 2009 and has attracted hundreds of diners more than happy to pay £24-95 for a light main course, a selection of up to 10 hand-crafted desserts and accompanying wines. Each event is normally sold out in advance. The next event takes place on Thursday 15th September.
