Riverford Scoops Double Whammy At Awards Ceremony

Farm triumphs at the Devon Life Food and Drink awards

Riverford Organic Vegetables last night scooped two awards at the prestigious Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2008. The organic veg box scheme was nominated in three categories and won Best Organic Product and Best Food Producer of the Year.

The awards ceremony was held at Sandy Park in Exeter and hosted by BBC Radio Devon’s Judi Spiers. The radio presenter asked representatives from Riverford about the secret to its success.

“Guy Watson has been growing organic veg at Riverford for over 20 years and we grow a really wide range of produce, from humble carrots and potatoes to herbs and exotic salad leaves. For us, it’s about flavour and making organic vegetables affordable and accessible to as many people as possible.” said Vitha Shepard of Riverford.

“Everyone at the farm is delighted that we’ve won two Devon Life awards,” said Guy Watson, Riverford founder. “These awards are voted for by the public and there are so many great producers in the South West – so it’s a real achievement. Thanks to everyone who has given us their support.”

Riverford Organic Vegetables, the nation’s favourite veg box scheme, grows over 100 varieties of good value, seasonal produce on its farms around the UK.

FACT FILE:

Established in 1986, Riverford Organic Vegetables is an independent producer of organic vegetables in the UK and delivers over 30,000 vegetable boxes a week throughout the South, West and North West of England, South Wales and across London. The company has won several Soil Association awards including Organic Business Person of the Year for its founder Guy Watson. Watson was also acclaimed the BBC Radio Four Farmer of the Year award in the Food and Farming Awards. Riverford’s first book, the Riverford Farm Cook Book, was published by Fourth Estate, September 2008.

Riverford Organic Vegetables set up its first sister farm, River Nene Organic Vegetables, in order to deliver fresh organic vegetables to even more UK households, keeping food miles down without compromising on quality; to allow local growers to reap the benefits of scale, sharing knowledge and equipment; and to give growers a fair return for their crops. River Nene Organic Vegetables now delivers vegetable boxes to 8,000 homes across the East Midlands. River Swale Organic Vegetables delivers vegetable boxes across the North and North East of England. Following the success of the first two sister farms, Riverford on Upper Norton Farm now grows and delivers to 8,000 customers in the Hampshire area. Riverford on Stockley Farm launched in September 2008, to grow and deliver to homes in the North West nad Shropshire.
